About This Product

This California Air Tools 10-gallon electric air compressor delivers reliable power and air flow with less maintenance and noise. Operating at an ultra-quiet 70 dBA, the powerful 2.0 HP (SP-9421) motor produces 1680 RPM creating less noise and less wear. It is designed to increase duty cycle and allow for longer, continuous run times. Enabling a variety of use in varying temperatures and uneven terrains, the machine's oil-free dual piston pump system is engineered for high performance and durability. The oil-free function extends the compressor's life cycle to more than 3,000 hours before wear compared to comparable compressor's 100 hours or fewer. You can start this compressor using fewer starting amps with the easy-start valve, which also releases a small amount of air from the pump to produce a no-load condition that allows the motor to spin freely. The included wheel kit permits easy movement around your jobsite, shop or garage.

Q:Besides weight and size what are the difference between this compressor and the 4.6 lbs double tank compressor? They both seem to have the same similarities. I know one has wheels and the other doesn't aren’t both of them portable?
by|Apr 4, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Both the 10020C and 4620AC leverage the same powerful 2 hp motor-pump (5.3 cfm @90 PSI). The 10020C has wheels which is great for portability since it is ~83 lbs (steel tank). The 10020C does have rubber bumpers on the front of the unit so you can lay the unit down on its face for transporting. Conversely, the 4.6 gallon compressor (CAT-4620AC) has a low center of gravity which is great for putting into the back of a truck or SUV since it will not roll around and suffer any damage. The 4620AC is currently rated our #1 construction job site compressor and is only 62 lbs since it is aluminum and the tank will not rust, nor will you see any brown/orange water discharge. NOTE: We do make the CAT-10020AC model which is also Aluminum and only 62 lbs: https://www.homedepot.com/p/California-Air-Tools-10-Gal-2-0-HP-Ultra-Quiet-and-Oil-Free-Aluminum-Rust-Free-Air-Tank-Electric-Air-Compressor-10020AC/312651055

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello. The operating range of the 10020CAD air compressor is 32F (freezing) to approximately 105F maximum, though it is suggested to not exceed ~84F when using the air compressor for longer durations).

A:  Being assembled in San Diego does not answer the manufacturing question. I believe all the parts are from China.

            Missing parts.
Purchased this yesterday. Arrived today. It works fine. However: the air hose connection points are cheap and leak right out of the box when you barely move a connected hose. Those will have to be replaced immediately. It was missing the mounting hardware for 1 of the wheels. So much for quality control. I am in the process of trying to get them to send me a mounting kit. Will see how that plays out. Not Home Depot's fault.

This little compressor is Awesome! It has the pressure and power to do what I need it to do. It's priced great and is super quiet. During my pre purchase investigation I read numerous reviews that said that the hose attachment to the compressor is a an Achilles heel so I bought a spring loaded pull down hose reel to fix that. Soooo worth the money.

Annoyingly mine took 3 weeks to arrive, Like many others I’m also replacing an old 5 gallon Craftsman compressor. It is very noticeably quieter than any other compressor I’ve ever heard running. When you flip the switch it will make some unusual venting sounds as it reduces the tank pressure before starting to build pressure. It still makes a usable amount air even when you run out of tank air, which is what I was looking for and it looks good next to my toolbox.

disappointed after 3rd month of use
initial impression i really liked it for my small garage. i did the recommended steps to start up confirmed it held pressure no air leaks. after 3rd month using exhaust hose fitting at on/off switch broke leaving threaded broken fitting within switch. i used broken tube extractor to try and remove from on/off switch but broke the brittle casting. I called manufacturer and left messages over forth of july week but never received call back. i ended up returning for in store credit and am greatful Home Depot was willing to help with manufacturer defect return.

This air compressor was very easy to assemble and came with all the parts needed for assembly. The working sound volume is super low. That's the reason I purchased it. I highly recommend this item. I used it for some mild sand blasting the back sides of my intake valves on my vehicle and it worked great. Plan to use this for many years to come. Constructed very well and again super quite.

I did quite a lot of research before deciding on the California Air Tools 10 gal compressor. I have been using a 5 gallon pancake compressor for the past year and while it served it's purpose, i did find i tended to avoid using it because it was just so loud and constantly ran. When I reached a point that I needed something a bit more robust to handle an HVLP sprayer down the road, this became an obvious choice. Upon getting the unit, there were a couple things needing assembly. The wheels and foot pads were very easy to assemble. There were also a couple of filters to assemble to the back of the motor. These were also a breeze to attach. After getting everything assembled, it was time to start it up. I assumed it would still be a certain amount of loud, but hoped it would be better than my former compressor. I fired it up and all I can say is WOW! This thing is ridiculously quiet. It's like a gentle hum of a motor. I used the air nozzle which worked flawlessly and it also has plenty of power to run my Air Locker nail remover for pallet wood. I also really liked the fact that this unit is oil free. I don't care to smell the oil fumes nor do I wish to have extra maintenance to worry about. This was another big plus in my book. The only minor gripe I have about this product thus far is the location of the drain valve. It's a bit awkward to get to and rests very close to the floor. That truly is a nitpick gripe however. It wouldn't deter me whatsoever from purchasing or recommending this compressor. Overall I am incredibly happy with this purchase thus far and would highly recommend this compressor.

If you want to eliminate maintenance related to an air compressor this is the one to buy. It's oil-less so there's no oil to check the level on or change out in the future. With the auto drain on the bottom of the tank there is no requirement to remember to manually drain condensate out of the tank. Also it is super quiet. When it is running it's about as loud as a small sump pump. With the radio on in the shop you don't even hear it turn on. On the bottom of the tank there is a 90 deg. elbow and a quick connect to hook the auto drain to. When you connect the auto drain tube into the the quick connect seems like it is loose. This looseness allows the auto drain to slope down and clear the tank. This didn't seem right but the tank holds air and shuts off at 125 psi and does not cycle to make up air when not in use (no leaks). All of the piping, wiring and controls on the top of the tank air well organized and are high quality. I've only had the compressor for a few weeks but it meets all of my expectations. I would recommend it to a friend.

The unit came fully assembled except for connecting the electronic components to the bottom drain which was simply accomplished by pushing two pieces together. One of the legs with the rubber pad was bent inwards where I used large flat washers to fill in the pushed up metal causing the rubber pad to sit lower and equal to its twin pad and the front wheels. I guess this happened prior to shipment as the box was undamaged. Paint had lifted off where the dent metal flexed. Called customer service and discussed issue. Explained I wasn't returning it for that. Used it with an 18 gauge nail gun to fasten cedar tongue and groove boards to an outdoor room ceiling. After the initial tank fill I think the compressor kicked in once or twice during the entire afternoon. I suspect this tank which is very quiet will meet my needs in the workshop. Having said that I am not a professional 8 hr/day tradesman, but a garage hobbyist.
