The California Air Tools 317 Water and Oil Air Filter is designed to be used with any size air compressor. The small lightweight design makes it very easy to attach and use without adding extra weight to the hose. Ideal for anyone who is using an air tool where water and oil can cause problems. Spray Painting, Airbrushing, Engraving, and Air Drying are common usage for this air filter.

A:Â Max. Pressure - 90 PSI
by|Jun 13, 2019
A:Â According to information I have seen for this type of in line air filter the max working pressure is 90 PSI. These filters are meant for use near a paint gun and installed after a secondary pressure regulator for that paint gun.

A:Â It is designed to work in line on the hose, probably near the tool it is designed to protect. But with the proper fittings I don't see why it wouldn't work in a permanent setup. I just wouldn't hook it directly to the output of the compressor. It's plastic and looks like it might not stand a lot of strain before it breaks.

A:Â Thank you for the interest in the 317 Water/Oil In-line Filter.
For the best results you need to attach this filter to your air tool.
As the air comes out of the compressor and goes through the air hose it cools.
Air cooling causes moisture or water in the air compressor tank and air hose.
This is why the you want the filter at the end of the hose next to your air tool.

I never got to use it; I am pretty sure it works just fine. But the vertical design is flawed; on my California Air Tools compressor the outlet is oriented horizontally, so I would need to install an elbow pointing up to connect the filter unit. Then the same again on the top if I want to connect the air hose horizontally. This would make for an awkwardly big and unstable contraption. I bought a Husky filter instead that has both ports mounted horizontally at the top of the unit.

The box tells you which end goes where!
I recently ordered one of these to replace an old one I had that lasted for a very long time before it finally gave out. These water/oil filters will work whether you mount them close to your air compressor, or if you mount them at the end of the air hose, close to the tool you are using. The closer to the tool you mount these, the more water they will remove, due to the fact that more condensation builds up in your hose as the air goes through it, Anyway, for those people out there who don't know which direction these things get mounted, you have to refer to the box. If you threw out your box, I have attached a picture of the box mine came in, and here is what it says right on the sides of the box: Air Inlet: 1/4" NPT Male, and Air Outlet: 1/4 NPT Female. It also says that this filter is good for working air pressures up to 90 PSI. I hope this helps the people out there who are questioning how this things mounts! I mounted mine about 8 inches from the outlet of my air compressor to try to trap some of the water and oil that might come out right at the beginning of the air line. And I always use a disposable water filter on the end of the hose where my tools mount to keep the rest of the water out of my tools. Especially my paint guns!

California Air Tools “ Air Dryer “
The air dryer works great! I live in a dry climate but I took it over the mountains for a job to the wet weather and noticed that it had trapped about a 1/4 teaspoon of water in the 2 days I was there.

Probably works as expected. But it would not fit on my newly purchased California Air Tools 2.0 Gal. 1.0 HP Ultra Quiet and Oil-Free Aluminum Tank Air Compressor. Even though it was recommend by Home Depot as an accessory "I Might Like". Doesn't fit 'cause it is too tall and air in and out are on top and bottom, respectively. Afraid to use extensions or elbows because it could stress the regulator. I will be returning it and getting one that fits. Hope, hope, hope !
