About This Product

California Trimmer reel mowers have been creating and maintaining beautiful lawns for over 80-years. The precision cutting action is superior to rotary mowers as it shears the grass blades with a clean, sharp cut like scissors, instead of tearing or shredding. Most grass experts agree that using a reel mower is better for the health of a lawn which will helps it stay greener longer and look like its part of a finely manicured golf course.

Highlights

  • 127cc OHV Briggs & Stratton 550 series engine for powerful and reliable performance

Q:How slow you can walk behind this mover?
by|May 10, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  The propel speed is about 3.0 mph at maximum engine RPM and there are couple of ways to reduce it. First, would be to run the engine slightly slower – although not more than about 10%-15% to maintain sufficient blade cutting speed. The drive speed can also be somewhat controlled by the engagement lever (on the left handle). All the drive components in the frame (chains, shafts, rear drive roller, reel blade, etc.) are inter-connected and rotate together at the same time. The engine speed and power is transferred to the frame via a belt tension system that is activated by squeezing the lever on the handle. By reducing the squeeze pressure of the lever (which causes the belt to only partially engage), it can provide lower speeds for gradual starts, slowing for turns and maneuvering in tight areas. However doing it also results in a slower reel blade cutting speed, so it's something to mindful of. It will also make the belt wear faster - although a replacement is relatively inexpensive and simple to change. It's also helpful to actively use the drive roller lift and lower function to provide further slowing control - especially when preparing to turn around.

Q:What’s the highest deck hight you can set it two
    by|May 7, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  The "Standard" models have a maximum cutting height of 1-7/8" and the "High-Cut" models go up to 2-1/4". Actual cutting height is affected by factors including ground hardness, levelness and grass conditions. Replacing the front wheels with a roller results in 1/8” - 3/16” lower cutting heights.

Q:Is this mower any good on mulching leaves?
      by|Apr 2, 2024

      Answer This Question

A:  Due to the configuration and function of reel mowers – with the cylinder / helix shaped blade that spins in a mostly open frame cavity – there’s not much air flow and they’re generally not very effective at picking up extra debris or cutting it multiple times. Conversely, rotary mowers have a mostly enclosed cutting area that creates air flow for a vacuum effect to lift up debris into the deck cavity to be cut before exiting. True mulching rotary mowers have completely enclosed decks so the grass / debris can circulate longer in the deck cavity to be cut multiple times into smaller clippings.

Q:How does this work on hills? I have some down sloping in my yard planted with Bermuda. Other mowers scalp the crest of hills. Is there a restriction or recommended slope that should not exceed with it?
          by|Mar 22, 2024
          1 Answer
          Answer This Question

A:  Our reel mowers have a relatively short wheelbase of only 15-16” versus the longer 25-26” of a typical rotary mower so they are less susceptible to scalping on slope to flat transitions. The main factor would be the height / distance of the slope (how long would the engine be tilted), and what direction it’s being cut. A relatively short slope distance with flat landing areas at the top and bottom is fine, but for an extended amount it’s not conducive to mow with it across horizontally on a slope more than 15 degrees – not only from a safety standpoint but also because – as with almost any heavier mower – the downhill side will cut lower into the grass. The engines manufacturers generally recommend not to operate them at more than a 20-degree slope. We would be happy to review this in more detail if you wanted to contact us directly.

Worst mower I have ever purchased — beware.
It looks coll & retrom and if your law is an absolute perfect monoculture of grass — no dandilions, onion grass or anything remotely fibrous — this mower is adequate. However, it will not cut through anything except grass. Anything and everything else is left standing, no matter how sharp the blades, and no matter how many times you roll over the same spot. An utterly useless purchase for an average Pennsylvania lawn.

It's unfortunate that the lawn conditions were not suitable for the mower. Due to the reel blade's design and function of gathering and shearing, they are not intended to be used on excessively tall growth that also includes weeds such as dandelions and onion grass. CT-JE

starts and cuts great. Only downside is handle is too short. I ran comment that you need the 4 inch extension and while I am only 5'11" I ordered after first mow. Don't know why they don't go ahead and have extended handle as an option.
