If it is only vinyl then no. You will have to have OSB or plywood behind the vinyl

Can this box be used in a basement with drop ceiling tiles? If not, can you recommend a product? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your answers. I was going to try the box with the extension bar, but I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to position a tile on the grid with this type of outlet box & bar. In the end I decided to go a different route. I used a metallic round box attached to the bottom of a wooden T-shaped support that I made, & then attached to the joists of the floor above.

can I paint the exterior of this? It's exposed in a shed without drywall.

If you’re going to, I would recommend painting it with a spray paint that adheres to plastic. I think you’ll have trouble painting it with a latex or oil base wall paint, without sanding it and priming it first. Krylon makes a spray paint that adheres to plastic, sold at Home Depot.

Can i use this box on a wall outdoor?

Yes, and requires a 4 inch hole to install it.

Can this be useful for a wall light ?

Asked by Judy February 27, 2020

Answers

Absolutely…and it works particularly well when the baseplate of the wall light is round as well. It’s slightly larger than a typical rectangular electrical box, so, before doing anything, hold it up behind the baseplate of your wall light to make sure it will be covered up after everything is installed.

Worked great for sconces. I have 2 recommendations to users: #1 don't drill the 3x 1/2" holes 120 degrees apart, as the template describes. I did this for the first light and the 1/2" holes were very close to being visible around the base of my sconce. For the next 3 I cut the 4" hole with a hole saw, only, and didn't cut the 3x 1/2" holes. The old work box fit just fine (it was snug, but I actually preferred this). Recommendation #2: Tighten and loosen the 'ear-screws' once PRIOR to installation. Reason - the threads in the plastic ears are not pre-cut. I had issues with the ears/screws becoming cocked in a strange position behind the wall and would not tighten. This was because the screws were trying to cut the threads for the first time. If you pre tighten the screws (and then loosen them to the original position) before installation, it will make tightening and installing once in place very easy. I can tell you from experience that it is very frustrating having to remove the box from the wall because 1 ear became snagged/cocked and won't tighten. Once I learned from the first box and corrected the issues, the last 3 boxes were a breeze!

I purchased three of these to hang some light weight simple pendant lights above our dining table. These are made for old construction. These normally come with a paper template shoved inside the box but this time there were none so I went on Carlon website and downloaded the template. I know I could get by without but I like the fact the template has points where you drill a 1/2" hole in 3 areas prior to cutting to compensate the extra space needed for the wings. It also ensures you don't end up with a larger hole than needed. After hole is cut you slide it up in place and with a philips screwdriver to tighten all 3 screws so the wings tighten to your substrate.

Screws are extremely hard to turn to the point where the box is not usable!! The tabs won't move toward the wall because the screws are so tight they cannot turn through the tab.

new batch sucks
New batch is hard to get the screws to turn. Plastic seems more brittle. First one all 3 tabs broke as they reached even a little tight. Second one i ran all screws in first with flat blade screwdriver because philips would not grip. After that it worked. Way to much f—ing around. Hope they get this problem fixed or get a different brand
