Cut out dimensions

Answer This Question

Place the open box side against the surface where you are mounting trace around the box with pencil/marker. You could start with a level draw one horizonal or vertical line then line up one side of box on that line then trace to insure levelness.

The Carlon B120R 1-Gang 20 cu. in. Old Work Electrical Box requires a cutout that matches its overall dimensions. Height (Length): 4-1/8 inches. Width: 2-15/16 inches (≈ 2.94 in). Depth: 3-5/8 inches (this is the box depth, not the cutout depth). For the wall opening (cutout), you typically need slightly larger than 4-1/8" × 2-15/16" to allow the box to slide in and the swing clamps to engage. Most installers cut about 4-1/4" high × 3" wide for clearance.

Can I purchase just the wings separately?
      ByOct 21, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

No, the Carlon B120R Old Work Box wings (swing clamps) are not sold separately. They are integral to the box design and molded into the body, so if the wings break, you generally need to replace the entire box.

How to secure romex cable in pvc box

        Answer This Question

On both the top and bottom of the back of the box, there is pre-determined spots to push the wire through. Once the wire is in, the tab holds the wire in place. Does the volume include the built in clamps? Should I deduct one volume allowance for the built in clamps?

          Answer This Question

According to the Carlon website, you still need to make a deduction for the clamps. https://carlonsales.com/techinfo/brochures/electrical/Zip Boxes_2B1.pdf

            0/0

Yes, the volume of a Carlon B120R box, including its built-in clamps, is the total volume of the box itself, and no deduction is required for the clamps.

Would I be able to jam one GFCI receptacle, one 12/2 and one 12/3 Rommex in this 20 cu box and be up to code?

                Answer This Question

With the device and wires alone you're at 8 conductors, not including wire nuts if you're not direct wiring. This box is rated for 8 #12 conductors. If you can get access to a stud, we suggest you use our B125AB (New/Old Work Box). This box can support up to 11 #12 conductors.

                  Answer This Question

Yes, this can be used. If you're going to be unplugging it often, we suggest a different box like B125AB and mount it to stud using the old work predetermined holes. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-1-Gang-24-5-cu-in-PVC-New-Old-Work-Electrical-Box-B125AB/305110267

Good price. Good product. Unlike that “other” hardware store that wants $9.00 for the same thing…it’s not the “Ace of Hearts” if you know what I mean.

Had to figure out how to get the existing box out as I used a hack saw blade and cut the nails out from the stud. After that the box worked well for the electrical lines.

This is a perfect outlet box if you are adding an outlet in the middle of the wall without needing to mount the box to the stud which may require to tear down larger section of the drywall. I just had to trace out the box directly onto the wall to cut with oscillating saw and self locking tabs located diagonally secures itself onto the wall without needing additional fixtures. It was a very clean job for me to add an outlet inside master bath closet.

                    Best box for drywall
For any DIYers out there that have drywall in their homes, I highly recommend that you have a few of these boxes on hand. Installing an electrical box after the drywall is already up can be challenging, but this box helps to take away some of the difficulty. You have the freedom to install this box anywhere on the wall, rather than only next to a stud. There is no need to nail anything into place and this box, when tightened, holds securely to the wall. This box works great for retrofitting your home for wall mount televisions, installing additional light switches, adding outlets in places like the garage, and many other potential uses.

This is my go-to old work box as I don't like to install anything less than 20 Cu In boxes. Always well made, sturdy and strong. Holds up well over the years. And i like the built-in Romex clamps.
