Questions & Answers

can i use bx cable with these Non -Metallic Wall box ?

Asked by: dave
I would not advise it -- not sure you even can per code. For bx cable, plan to use steel boxes with the proper anti-short bushings and the proper clamps. That way the bx is grounded when you ground the box. If you don't understand that, then please get an electrician or at least learn more about it before you do it yourself. Electrical work can be tricky, and doing it right is all about safety for you and your family.

Is this structurally sound enough to mount a bathroom vanity wall sconce on? (I have little space between studs for a box to fit- like 2.5.")
Asked by: ResearchedDIYer
This is an outlet or a switch box and is not meant for hanging anything like a wall light. If you intend to hang a wall sconce, you want to use another type of box.

Do you completely knock out two upper corner panels(for one outlet) or just bend them back to firmly hold the wires?

Asked by: bolee
Box does not firmly hold the wires; the knockout leaves a hole. Wires must be secured close to the box to meet code.

Carlon 1-Gang 21 cu. in. New Work Non-Metallic Electrical Wall Box with Adjustable Bracket (Case of 40) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 44.

I normally would not write a review on something like this product, however these new work boxes are worth taking the time for a review. The innovation here is the adjustability of these boxes once installed. countless times I have had to either add box extensions or, worse yet, had to remove and replace a box completely simply because the box was installed improperly. Such is not the case with these; this is the most user friendly DIY box I have found. It is almost impossible to install incorrectly. They should be code when installing in a kitchen work area; makes installing tile or any other wall covering painless. The mounting holes in the rear aid in securing the box giving it the stability required when manipulating wires inside the box. There is plenty of usable space inside to hold what is needed. Durable construction means it won't flop or bend when working inside it. These boxes are definitely worth the slight price bump from a standard new work box given that the headaches and frustrations with using standard boxes simply disappear.

You can set them onto the studs quickly, and if you pencil in a line on the stud where the center of the box should be you can center the line through the large hole on the bracket, so everything lines up. Unlike the boxes with the two nails, you fasten the bracket tight against the stud, so you don't have to worry about getting the clearance for the sheetrock or other wall covering exact. And you can set them back beyond the stud when putting the rock up and you don't have to worry about exact fitting on the outlet box holes. Cut a hole in the rock at the middle of the box, then use your knife to cut the exact hole, then just screw them out to the proper depth. Makes it less likely that you'll cut a wire when you're cutting the hole, also, since the wiring is also set back.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Recommend Great concept but has fatal flaw. The box gets pushed in or pulled forward when plugging in or unplugging an appliance, in my case, simple things such as an alarm clock, small lamp etc. I wish I knew this before I installed 20 of them in my new home addition. I wonder if they actually tested these boxes for performance before commencing mass production and sales.
