Q:I need to mount this box in a 2x8. If I cut a hole in the 2x8 to fit the box, will the wings that hold the 2 -gang box in place be able to fold out and hold it in?

Q:Is there a deeper version of this box with similar capacity to a 2 gang new work? Need to fit 12 12awg conductors and this seems too small by code.

Answer This Question

A:  There are two, one a CarlonBH234R, and the other (Home Depot doesn't list a brand, but there is a part# R9329-EWK on it). There is also an old work/new work Carlon, - Don't quote me on the part# but I believe it is B234ADJC. In any case, all of this is available on the Home Depot website, when you look up work boxes in their electrical menu.

Q:For a renovation I need to install a box in a wall where the previous vanity light fixture did not have an electrical box & there is no stud. The new light fixture requires a 2 gang box to mount onto. Would this box support a 10 lb light?

    Answer This Question

A:  Probably not. You need a Suspended Ceiling Brace to span the 2 studs in the wall closest to the location of your light fixture. The brace has teeth that attach to the studs but you should also nail the brace to the studs. You can change the box on the brace to fit your light fixture.

A:  Unlikely, as this stays in place by using a screw to clamp small pieces of plastic on the drywall in two opposing corners. Revealing more drywall and locating a new work box on that stud would probably be best.

          Updating my 1940's home
I decided to add some outlets and light switches. These old work Carlon boxes were the boxes I decided on. I had to use these because my old home has 1/2 drywall" with about 5/8" plaster on top. The ability to position the fasteners at the length/ depth needed was a simple but genius solution. Plenty of room to work with to move wire in place.

I needed to move a pair of light switches a few inches as we were tiling a wall and they would have been halfway on the tile and halfway off. It was a relatively easy job - hardest part was trying to release the wires from the switches (you need a tiny screw driver to poke through the hole that releases the grip on the wires, only one I could find small enough for intended for eye glasses). I deliberately cut the hole in the wall a little small and then trimmed with a knife so the box fitted snugly and then mechanism to clamp it to the drywall worked perfectly first time of trying.

These just work. My one comment is that getting the cable through the opening is harder than one expects.

Easy as it gets. Cut the hole in the sheetrock, shove it in, and tighten the screws. Install your switches or plugs and you are good to go!
