Q:Can these be used on a drop ceiling? If not then what can I use

      Answer This Question

A:  I would say yes, it can be used for a drop ceiling if properly secured to the framework grid. There are two holes on each end of the spreader bar that need to be secured to the drop ceiling grid. This is suitable for a light fixture weighing up to 50 pounds. To be sure you have a proper ceiling electrical box I would verify with an electrician and/or your local building code. Hope this is helpful.

A:  No it is made to be in between I beams. For drop ceiling, you must use fluorescence or LED light mounting box or clips.

A:  Generally, 8-32 screws mount into the box. I have also seen some people use #8 course dry wall screws.

A:  Absolutely yes, but for heavier or more missive fax, I would advice to tight it in to cross piece of 2x4

Very solid non-conductive ceiling electrical box for mounting a light fixture or ceiling fan in "new" work. It is standard 4 inch diameter x 3 inch deep with 5 access points for wiring entry/exit. It mounts by an adjustable bar hanger with a minimum extension of 10 inches to a maximum extension of 20 inches - perfect for mounting between joists on 16 inch centers. It can also be mounted to the side of a joist with nails then remove the hanging bar. There are 2 hammer in tabs and a hole at each end of the bar hanger to mount the box between joists. The locking screws on the box (accessed from inside) make it easy to slide the box side-to-side to accommodate placement anywhere between the joists. It is classified 2-HR-W-C and UL approved. It is also proudly made in the USA. Interesting side note - this is the same company that made the first "Hula Hoop" back in the 1950's.

The biggest reason for the three stars instead of five is how this packaged arrived at my house. I am not sure the condition it was in when it was picked up for shipping but the box was not square and had been crushed at some point. I think it was before shipping because the box had then been taped - a lot. It arrived with all of the pieces still in the box. Some of them had been bounced around so much that the rods had separated. In the end everything was able to be put back together and I have been able to install the boxes. These aren't as sturdy as some of the heavy duty boxes I have installed in the past. The bar seems a bit flimsy for me. Luckily they are installed in a basement for use with my shop lighting.

I have been using these ceiling boxes for years. When you are installing ceiling lights you often want them in just the right spot. You can take this off the bracket and nail to the ceiling joint or you can use the adjustable bracket to place the light exactly where you want it. I have used them to mount all kind of ceiling lights in new construction and have never had a problem. They are made by Carlson which always work well.

My home was built in 2011 I have had 3 of these break where the plastic box is attached to the metal bar allowing the fixture to come out of the cieling. They fall apart and are a safety hazard.
