Questions & Answers

My door is 18 feet wide. 20 panels. Am I going to have issues with adding too much weight?

Asked by: Henny
My 2 car garage door faces west in Phoenix AZ and the metal would get too hot to touch, radiating into the garage. After adding the insulation the opener would attempt to lift but then stop within a foot. I immediately thought about rebalancing the springs but was told I would probably need to get stronger springs. Before this happened I checked the Genie owners manual and found I could change the settings for "thrust" on both opening and closing. It worked perfectly by changing the up setting from 5 to 6. Problem solved. Page 17 of the owners manual.

What kind of glue is needed to hold the panels in place?

Installation question? my door does'nt look to have those channels to slip these in?

I am attaching a picture of my garage door... will this work? everyone else seems to have what appears to be slots on each section of the door that these would slip in too.. mine doesn't appear to have that? would I have to take off the clamps that hold the garage door and then put the Styrofoam on and rebold it through the product?

Will this be effective if my door has windows and I don't want to cover those up?

The windows let in lots of light which is beneficial for using my garage during the day, so I don't want to cover them up.
Asked by: JonnyB
I was going to put these in and my door has windows. I was just going to cut out the windows and then use the shrink film that they have for windows to cover the inside portion and it would be similar to a double pane window.

Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit (8-Pieces) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 989.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for garage door This is a great product to get if you want to better insulate your garage. Your garage is still going to be warm in the summer but once you put the garage foam insulation on, you can subtract around 5 to 10 degrees difference depending on what time the sun is shining on the garage door in my opinion. I have a double car garage door and it took me over three hours to install the foam board insulation. On my garage, I had to remove four long metal braces on the garage door so I could install the foam board. Cutting the foam board insulation around the windows was very time consuming. The hack saw worked best for me cutting the foam board. Cutting the foam board insulation does make a mess in your garage. The foam board pieces that seemed loose, I sprayed a multipurpose adhesive on the garage door so that the foam board would stay in place. The only complaint I had was this product was not sold in the home depot stores so I had to order it online and wait one week to get the product.

They are southwest facing in SoCal, so my main problem was excessive heat buildup during the afternoon. Temps would soar in the garage space to 100+ degrees on hot days. So I bought three panel sets. Installation was simple, although I did remove some of the hinge screws to get the panels as far in the channels as possible, it was simple and when the screws go back in, they hold the panel firmly in place. My only complaint on the install is that the static electricity with the Styrofoam balls is a little messy. Shop vac was a necessity to clean up. After installation, I was pleasantly surprised to see a nearly 30° difference from one side of the door to the other. See the pics with the temp gauge. The interior of the garage hasn't gone above 85° even on the hottest days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from usable To begin with we wanted to insulate our two garage doors in order to get a warmer floor in the bonus room during the winter in NC. The product was delivered quickly and as described. The instructions were rather short, no word of how to tighten them in nicely. So you are on your own to figure out a good solution. We decided to also buy some Polyurethan foam for the gaps and to tighten the plates better in place. If you have a garage door with lots of covered Corners (most probably have) it is impossible to get the pieces in the door in one piece. So we cut a 2 Inch piece, stuffed it in the corner and then took the big part. The product is somewhat bendable, but if you do too much easily breaks. Both doors together took us 1 days (we had to remove certain parts of the door and then put them back on). The result with the white smooth surface looks very good and although the difference in floor warmth isnt huge, you do feel a slight difference.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from this may work fine for those of you who don't... this may work fine for those of you who don't live desert but I do. I tested with w temperature gun my garage faces west at sunset (the hottest pt of the day) it help a little drop temp by 5, Then I added reg insulation temp drop another 5,then added reflective drop another 7. Personally I don't feel the different. Now this test was done under extreme condition (outside temp 113) so if you don't have a heat wave this may work for you.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This is very expensive for what you get. The styrofoam... This is very expensive for what you get. The styrofoam is the same as what might be found in boxes of items you buy from a store..ie, refrigerator or dishwasher. Just sheets of this stuff that we all throw away, so, I still have to cut is to fit and then double side tape to the garage door. So, I'm thinking it's a lot a dough for what you get. My two cents worth.......

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Garage Door Insulation This is, by far, the best insulation kit I have ever installed. The product is an excellent design and very easy to work with. The relief cuts at the rear of the panel makes bending the panel an easy task of installing the panels into the door compartments. While Styrofoam can be a little messy, a vacuum cleaner made cleanup a no brainier. I think the most important step is in placing the fillers in the door panel edges and not leaving any gaps. I own a FLIR EXTECH i5 infrared camera and took some images. The 1st image is the outside metal door temperature taken with full sun. The temperature registered 140 degrees F. The 2nd image is the inside of the door with the insulation installed. The temperature measured an incredible 87.1 degrees F. That amounts to a 53 degree F. differential!! Thank you Home Depot

The sun beats down directly on my garage-door in the afternoon and it quickly gets over 130 deg F in the summer. Since there is living space above the garage I am hoping this will help. So far it seems noticeably cooler in the afternoon but as I did not qualify this with an actual temperature reading set before and after I have no actual proof to give. The cutting is messy as others reviewers described but I found to have a new razor blade edge for EACH cut prevented much of the mess. Unfortunately once I ran out of my 4th new edge the mini foam balls start flying! Setup on a 2 car door took about 90min with another 15-20min of clean up. I would have saved 5min on the cutting and 10min on the clean up if I would have had a new blade edge for each cut. I would also suggest you inspect each panel end for damage before you start cutting if you are particular with how it looks. This damage was no reason for return as long as you plan out your cuts so that damaged edge is removed. About 3 of the 16 panels were dinged up on the end but again this was not an issue. As others suggest install the larger panels first just in case you cut short and can use that same piece for a shorter portion.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's worth the effort I used this on a previous garage and it makes a significant difference in the heat and cold. It also looks great. It is messy, so be prepared for little pieces of styrofoam everywhere. Pros: Works very well Looks great Easy to clean Makes the garage brighter because it's white and reflects the light. Helps protect the car from extreme temperate damage and deterioration Keeps the temperature of the garage from affecting the rooms in the house that adjoin it. Cons: No room for error. (If you damage a piece or cut it the wrong length you have to use it anyway) Keeps the heat in from the hot engine of the car as well as it keeps heat out. Messy while installing Time consuming. (It took me 6 hours to install 18 pieces) It was necessary for me to remove some brackets and reinstall them so I wouldn't damage the foam. Almost all corners are damaged a little from shipping.
