Questions & Answers

Can the tiller be moved (rolled) with the engine off or can you stop the tines from moving with the engine on (i.e. roll into a shed).
ByMay 17, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Yes, this tiller can be manually transported with the engine off. However, this is only possible when the wheels are set to the freewheel position. To do this, the wheel locking pins must be inserted into the designated holes on the wheel shaft, allowing the wheels to move freely. For visual guidance, please refer to the images and instructions provided in the Operator’s Manual on page 17.

Why was this item produced without a neutral position so the tines cannot turn, in the transmission so the Tiller could be transported to the tilling site and back to the storage area without the CRT's turning

I bought a used tiller and it didn’t come with the instruction manual. I tried to download the manual but it keeps on saying an error message for downloading, is there any way you could send me a manual?

Great machine with plenty of power!
I grabbed this Champion tiller prior to moving to a new place a while back, and only recently did I finally have the chance to put it together and start chopping up some ground. Suffice to say, I'm very pleased! It arrived in a heavy wooden crate with everything you'd need to assemble it and get it running, save the gasoline. The assembly was smooth and clear thanks to the concise directions. The oil provided was the precise amount, and - after adding gas and opening the fuel valve - the engine came to life on the very first pull. I'm finding that the tiller has plenty of power to propel itself forward and drive the tines. The two handle-mounted levers that engage the forward or reverse clutches are very intuitive and natural to use. They're easy to grip and manipulate, and they snap out of engagement quickly when you let go, which is a nice piece of mind for safety. In my mind, I can't help but compare this to a red-branded tiller I used to use from the 1980s that had levers to engage and disengage the drive...whereas it was a true beast of a machine, it also had the tendency of trying to rip your shoulders from the sockets when it caught on something, and then it would try and run away downfield. This Champion is a huge improvement for user comfort and safety, overall! I'm using this in sandy, southern soil, with few rocks but a lot of matted roots and thicker, traveling vine roots. The drive wheels grind forward nicely through solid ground with authority, and the tines do a great job of chopping roots up to perhaps a 1" diameter, give or take. The machine's traction bogs a bit in loose, deep sand after things are chopped up, but I'd think that's to be expected with a counter-rotating setup. The motor maintains power regardless, and that's hugely important. The tiller will settle down rather easily once the soil is soft, and I've found that the ultimate depth of tilling is largely a factor of how loose the soil is and how much you muscle the machine around. The depth rod on the rear may help guide the depth a bit, but once the ground is broken, it functions best as a visual aid. The machine's weight is also spot-on for the size. It's not too heavy to be overly cumbersome, but it's heavy enough to command the earth below it. You don't need to add your weight to push the tines into the earth, in other words. What I'd have really liked is a way to disengage the drive wheels without having to unlock the linchpins on the axles. The axles get gritty, and sliding the wheels in or out of engagement involves tipping the machine halfway over, freeing the pins, moving the wheels on the gritty shafts, etc. This is definitely a bit cumbersome, although not a deal breaker. In future iterations, perhaps a manual disengagement from the driveline would be an option. In synopsis, I'm 100% happy. This machine has ground up a few thousand square feet of root-packed soil and performed great. It starts on the first pull, it cleans up well thanks to a solid, smooth paint job, and it chugs through earth like it's supposed to. I'm sure this tool will be in the fleet for a long time to come!

                      Great for gardening
Exactly what I needed for the garden. Easy to maneuver. Not too heavy and power was user friendly.

                        Works good
Works fairly good for most of the ground but struggles with the hard red clay.

The worse tiller I have ever owned
The tiller will pull to the already tilled area, it will only dig 3 to 4 inches deep, barely tilling the dandelions that have grown in the early spring, if it encounters an untilled area, it will move around to find a soft area of dirt, or shake violently trying to tear my arms off! the small tires, will rotate wildly if a clump of dirt rolls under the front guard instead of climbing over it! Rear tines are supposed to better than front tines, but I will vehemently disagree with you after using this champion rear tines tiller!!

                                Performed Flawlessly
Just assembled mine and put it to use. It did great. Using a mulch method of gardening so working on building up the soil, so I didn't go super deep with it, but it chewed up the grass roots with no problem. Looking forward to a very good garden this year. Will be using this in several other places this spring.

Amazing piece of equipment. Very stout and does not bog down when the going gets tough. My 86 year old neighbor can start it with one pull. Yes, he will be tilling his garden before Thanksgiving with this machine.

This tiller works great. I have a 1/4 acre of hard rocky dirt and it made the job way easier than expected. Starts right up every time and never have an issue, 1 tank of gas will last all day.
