Q:I have a ceiling that I will need to retrofit as I cannot open it up (potential asbestos and other issues). Is it correct that these can be affixed directly to the existing ceiling? And then we would attach drywall to these once that was done? Thank you

DID ITS JOB
I got these channels to do the ceiling for my basement. They work two ways. First they protect the drywall from cracking in that they allow the structure above the channels to move and the drywall being attached to the channels is isolated. Second, they help control sound travel by separating the structure via less contact (only the screws, rather than the whole panel). They are easy to install and useful.

Didn’t work for me
I had this installed for my basement apartment. You can still hear every footstep! If fact I can even hear when someone is sweeping the floor upstairs. It’s ridiculous. I used this product along with rockwool and 5/8” drywall on the ceiling. I wish I would have done two layers of drywall instead.
