can you use more than one color stain to get a light dark appearance? like 2 grays, first coat the dark then second lighter or the other way around if that would be better. Outside patio

    Answer This Question

Though this can be done it is not recommended as we cannot ensure the color that you envision. If this is something you would like to do please wait at least 30 min in between applications to properly apply.

I used the terra-cotta stain and sealant on my concrete patio, but a portion turned white after a couple of months. When wet, it goes back to normal color, but when dry, it goes back to the white color.

      Answer This Question

Hi! Based on your description, this is commonly caused by calcium deposits (efflorescence) or trapped moisture beneath the sealer. Moisture can sometimes migrate up through the concrete, especially near surrounding planters, irrigation, or other moisture sources, causing the sealer to appear white when dry and return to normal when wet. We’d be happy to help diagnose the issue and walk you through the proper repair process. Our technical support line is available 24/7, or you can email us with a few photos of the affected area. We’ll help determine the cause and provide the best solution to get your patio looking great again.

I have reddish/pinkish/white brick on the outside of my house. I would like to change it to a brownish tone using this product. I do not want a paint. I would like the stain to show the different variations in the brick. Will this work for me?
        ByJun 25, 2026
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Thank you for your interest in our Spanish Cafe Concrete Stain. This product is a semi-transparent, water-based concrete stain designed for porous concrete, masonry, and similar cementitious surfaces. Because brick can vary significantly in porosity and may have existing sealers, coatings, or efflorescence, we recommend testing a small inconspicuous area first to confirm adhesion and the final color. On properly prepared, unsealed brick, the semi-transparent finish may allow some of the natural color variation and texture of the brick to remain visible rather than creating a solid painted appearance. Please note that the final color will be influenced by the existing reddish, pink, and white tones in the brick, so results may vary from the color shown on the container. For the most even and durable result, the brick should be clean, dry, and free of any previous sealer, paint, or water-repellent coating before application.

Can it be used on painted patio surfaces
          ByJun 15, 2026
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Hello, Thank you for your interest in our Sunset Concentrated Semi-Transparent Water-Based Concrete Stain. This product is designed to penetrate and color porous concrete surfaces. It is not recommended for application over painted or sealed patio surfaces, as the stain cannot properly penetrate through existing paint or coatings. For best results, the surface should be clean, porous, and free of paint, sealers, coatings, or other materials that may prevent absorption. If the patio is currently painted, the paint would need to be completely removed and the concrete properly prepared before applying the stain. If you can provide additional details about your patio surface and the type of coating currently on it, we would be happy to offer further guidance.

What type of roller to use
            ByMay 31, 2026
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hi, thanks for your question! We don't recommend using a roller for stains. Spraying is one of the best ways for an even coverage. Anything with a cone tip; no fan tips as they leave streak marks. We also recommend using any soft bristle broom or brush. Each application gives a different finish. Remember to do a test area first.

my cement has already been painted with concrete porch paint. It is a solid color. Can I apply the stain on top of clean porch paint and will it work the same as if it was on a unpainted concrete surface? What would I have to do differently?
              ByMay 21, 2026
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Hello, Thank you for your interest in our Spanish Cafe Concrete Stain. Because your concrete surface has already been coated with a solid-color concrete porch paint, the stain will not perform the same way as it would on bare, unpainted concrete. Concrete stains are designed to penetrate into porous concrete surfaces, while painted surfaces block penetration. Applying the stain directly over the painted surface may result in poor absorption, uneven color, or adhesion issues. For best results, the existing porch paint would need to be completely removed so the stain can penetrate the concrete properly. After paint removal, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned and allowed to dry before applying the stain. If removing the paint is not something you want to do, a concrete paint or coating product may be a better option than a penetrating stain for your project.

We stained our pool & spa coping, wall caps and step threads with the dark slate and absolutely love how they came out. I looks beautiful & so glad we did it.

                    Great product.
We just did our Barndo with this. We are truly in love. It turned out great. Easy to use drys very quickly.we are so pleased with the outcome. We bought the cleaner and the sealer for our 1,400 sq ft barn. We bought 4 of each. We had more than enough. We used the Spanish Cafe. We did two coats then sealed. It went on easy. We let dry through the night and sealed the next day. And waited 48 hours before we walked or put anything on it.

                      Easy! coverage!
Easy to apply. Followed the manufacturers tutorial. Mixed up very easily and sprayed easily with a pump sprayer. Got nice even coverage and after three coats started to get opaque, which was good for me since I couldn’t get absolutely all the old stains off of the 40 year-old garage floor. Clings well to the concrete side walls at the base of the walls too. Did not drip or run. Color was close to as pictured though a little darker. I guess it just depends on what color your concrete is.

Best choice for a black floor
My goal was to transform a neglected concrete floor of 50 years into an “industrial look” black. I had done this before in a busy vet practice and the floors held up well. I scraped off everything I could, vacuumed and cleaned the floors well, and ultimately used CLR cleaner to etch the floors. I chickened out of using muriatic acid. The prep work was by no means perfect. I didn't have the drainage to power wash so it was the best I could do. I started by using 2 quarts of distilled water to 1 part dye and brushing on with an old broom. I ultimately used undiluted stain and brushed it heavily onto the areas that needed more stain. I got the look I wanted. If you are looking for a black floor this is your prodict !
