Questions & Answers

Screws vs pins?

The description for these side wall brackets says 4x1" screws are provided to secure the brackets to the wall, but instead mine came with pins. Furthermore, the head of each pin is small enough to pass through the hole in the bracket. I don't understand how is this supposed to secure the bracket to the wall. At best, the bracket will be resting on the protruding pin, at worst the pin will slip through the hole in the bracket.
Asked by: Craig
I know the problem all the negative reviewers are having, as I had the same issue. You must push the anchor through the bracket hole first, then insert into the wall. Then insert the pin. If you insert the anchor into the wall first, then there is nothing to hold the bracket against the wall since the pin head is smaller than the bracket hole. The illustration on the back of the packaging does not show this correctly.

do the brackets come in nickel
Asked by: Marushka
No, these brackets are made in a tough, well designed plastic. I don't recall seeing them in any color but white, but brown, black or grey would be possible. I've only ever used the white shelves, and so my attention to the available colors has been kind of limited. Check the manufacturer's web site.

Hi, when installing the bracket, should the anchors go through the two holes on bracket? Or should the anchor be fixed into wall first and then nail the bracket to the anchor? The nails look too small though in the second scenario and don't think it could fix the bracket. Thanks a lot.
Asked by: Rose
Yes, they should go through both holes. But, unfortunately with these, the nails go all the way through the holes in the mounting brackets. I needed to actually use small washers to hold the nails in place, but this actually weakened the bracket's holding power. I suggest looking for another bracket.

What if there is a stud where one of the brackets has to go?

Asked by: DIYish
Then use a screw directly into the stud.

Customer Reviews

Preloaded Wall Brackets for SuperSlide Ventilated Wire Shelving (2-Pack) is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be sure to install wall fastener correctly Many of the negative reviews complain about the wall anchors with metal pins being weak and loose because they were not installed correctly due to confusing instructions. The two plastic wall anchors must be first inserted in the holes in wall bracket and then the bracket with the wall anchors installed is positioned against the wall with the plastic anchors inserted into the predrilled holes in the wall. Finally, the metal pins are pushed into the fasteners to secure the bracket to the wall. Note tjat these wall brackets are rated for only 10 lbs. which is surprisngly little but sufficient if you are just storing light items on the shelf. To increase the weight limit, use a regular screw style expanding wall fastener instead of the provided fasteners.

On top of that, make the heads smaller than the holes on the brackets. So, not only do you not get a sense of security from a support stand point, they slide out of their anchors with ease. I had to purchase screws to substitute the push in pins with and they did the job. ClosetMaid should really stop playing games and return back to screws or just sell the brackets as is, so customers are not having to spend extra money and waste unnecessary time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY! DOES NOT WORK AS DESIGNED! Bought these with the Closetmaid wire shelving and they did not fit properly,l resulting in uneven shelving. Complete waste of time and money; Home Depot should take them off store shelves so customers do not unwittingly buy shelving that does not fit or will fail and fall out of the wall.

I bought these brackets to install additional wire shelving in my pantry closet. I had originally installed shelves about 6 years ago and the brackets made by ClosetMaid then were far superior to the present ones. The prior brackets were much sturdier and were installed using screws. The present brackets are less sturdy and use nails for installation. The biggest problem with these new ones is that the head of the nail is smaller than the mounting hole of the bracket, thus causing the nail to just slide right through the bracket. I needed to use some of my own small washers to hold the nail into the bracket. And because of the nail not being fully inserted into the wall anchor, the brackets strength is reduced. This is very poor design on ClosetMaid's part. It seems that quality assurance is not a priority in their business model. I will use these for now, but I will certainly look for a more reliable replacement. And then, I will return these to my local Home Depot for a refund.

I don't know how Closet Maid came up with the idea to use these pins instead of screws. I just installed 10 ventilated shelves and the pins back out after hanging clothes. I actually heard a pin drop in the middle of the night. Also, the pin head is smaller than the holes on the brackets, which allows the brackets to fall off. I had also used wall clips and shelf brackets and pins still backed out. I had to redo all 10 shelves with screws. I have to buy screws because the brackets come with these pins. Added expense. Same with the wall clips, although I did find some that had screws. Closet Maid had a good product before incorporating these pins. Very poor design!

According to the instructions on the back of the package, you "place an anchor into each drilled hole in the wall. Replace wall bracket on front lip of shelf and raise to align with holes. Secure with screws." This makes it seem like you put the anchors into the wall directly and then put the bracket over it and then put the pins through the bracket and into the anchor. If you do that, the pin head is too small and the bracket falls right off. The packaging also shows a screw instead of a pin. The image on the mfg website shows that you actually put the anchors through the hole in the bracket, and then into the wall. Then the anchor acts as a washer and causes the pin head not to fall through the bracket. Figuring this out caused a lot of frustration. Disappointing product and instructions for what should be an easy install. Instructions sadly lacking.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed with anchors and pins Installed exactly like directions said and after a few weeks the pins started pulling out of the anchors. Once the pins pulled out the brackets were very loose and the shelf sagged. After about 2 months of pushing the pins back in I finally went to Home Depot and bought new metal anchors with screws. Once I pulled out all the old anchors and installed the new metal ones with screws, I haven't had a problem.
