Product Overview

For DIYers and professional tradesmen who recognize the importance of going green and using natural timber harvested in a responsible manner, turn to this FSC-certified PureBond Birch Plywood from Columbia Forest Products. Each 5-ply sheet features decorative birch veneers on the face and back, which exhibit the warmth and beauty of natural hardwood to supply your carpentry creations with visual allure. Furthermore, the 1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. panels are manufactured with a soy-based PureBond technology that is formaldehyde-free so it won’t deteriorate air quality, as is common with UF-constructed sheets that are susceptible to releasing airborne contaminants over time. Intended for interior use, these birch plywood panels are an affordable way to craft authentic hardwood-faced masterpieces such as built-in cabinets, entertainment centers, tables, shelves, headboards, wall panels and more. With an eye toward sustainability, Columbia takes pride in manufacturing this Earth-conscious product and takes seriously its responsibility in replenishing forests for future generations.
  • California residents
  • Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as a responsibly harvested timber product, which means your purchase supports healthy, sustainable forests

  • PureBond hardwood plywood is an environmentally friendly, cost-competitive alternative to panels manufactured with urea formaldehyde (UF), which may degrade air quality over time
  • Contains 100% natural wood bonded with a food-grade soy-based adhesive that does not emit toxic air contaminants
  • Decorative top and bottom veneers, measuring approximately 1/42" thick, exhibit the beauty and timeless quality of natural hardwood and are suitable for painting or staining
  • Water-resistant composition has a higher moisture tolerance than UF panels and is less likely to warp than solid wood
  • Allow panel to acclimate to interior climate conditions for several days before customizing - for interior applications only
  • For best cutting results, use an 80-tooth (or greater) table saw blade intended for sheet goods or a carbide-tipped circular saw plywood blade

I used two sheets of this plywood and did not notice any odor. I cut into 18 x 24 pieces and put an edge banding on each without noticing.

I had it ripped to 2' wide so I'm sure HD will cut into 3 pieces if you ask.

I decided to build pull-out draws for our kitchen cabinets. I used this for the draw bottoms and used oak for the sides. It worked out great, is strong enough to support heavy dishes or pots and was easy to use.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
I enjoy building bookcases, entertainment centers and other home projects with plywood. This is the first time I have used the birch plywood, and I have to say, I'm very impressed. It arrived via a freight company undamaged and perfectly straight, packaged between 2 1/2" inch maple plywood sheets, all wrapped up together with strong plastic ties. The birch has a beautiful wood grain pattern on it, and it is very strong and sturdy. I used it and the maple (after sanding them down to get rid of scuff marks from shipping) to build the platform for a Murphy wall bed. The grain is so pretty that I decided it will look much better sanded and stained, rather than painted. The wood splintered slightly along the edges where I cut it, but I think that has to do more with needing a new saw blade than the quality of the plywood. Any snags were easy to sand down, and the bed looks great. I will definitely consider using birch for future projects.

(What's this)
I have used these panels before in various sizes and veneers and never been disappointed. This is the first panel I have seen that has absolutely no void or defect along the 24 feet of perimeter. Even after storing in our dry high desert atmosphere it is almost perfectly flat. Some of my friends swear by 'Baltic Birch' plywood, but at 2 or 3 times the price, I can't see how they can be any better than this.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Used this half inch for a recent project. Wanted to upgrade a couple parts of my kids loft bed and needed a decent looking plywood. I was also concerned about some plywoods that smell horrible and did not want my kids breathing in that. I have used Purebond in the past and liked how it looked and worked. It was easy to work with and I found the veneer thicker than I would think on a typical 1/2" sheet which is what this was. Very little chip out and I did not see any voids in the product I used. I ended up putting two coats of natural shellac on it and it looks really good with that coating (see photos). It almost has an white oak like look on it but I guess birch can look that way and it works for where I used the plywood. I believe this is rated at least a C3 grade, its a bit hard to tell. One of the reason I did not give this 5 stars is the rating of the boards. Out of the two boards i had, 1 was really good but the other board was not. The back was utility grade type of veneer. I would suggest you check each board when you purchase it.

(What's this)
I've ordered other pieces of wood online in the past and have been disappointed when they arrived due to bowing, imperfections and shipping damage, but that's not the case with this piece. It's a beautiful, smooth piece of wood with no imperfections and I am really happy with it. I'll be using this as a top for a cabinet I'm making so I was really hoping it would arrive nice and clean - it did.

Absolute junk

I purchased six sheets of this for a project. Instead of the 15/32" thickness on the sticker, typical for 1/2" ply, it was in reality 3/8" thick (12/32). Of the six pieces, ONE was 14/32" (7/16") which I figured I could get away with for a small table. I cut out a table top and proceeded to rip the 3" skirt pieces for around the edge. The interior plys were NOT GLUED TOGETHER! For HALF the sheet! Glued to about 6" from the edges, but the entire center hadn't seen a drop. I've used this Birch "PureBond" from Home Depot for years...back when it was $33/sheet. I've probably gone through $5,000 of the stuff. Sure, I've seen the occasional void. But to shell out $250 for plywood, cut into the only sheet that meets (or at least comes close) to specs and find THIS little surprise?! Absolutely inexcusable. Absolute junk.

The plywood looked great, but the product did not lay flat. This made it difficult to build square cabinets.
