Answer This Question

A:  Hi Jaden, good question! If USB-A and USB-C are used at the same time, the output voltage of USB-C is 5V. If only USB-C is used, the output voltage will adjust to the need of your charging device. It can be 5V, 9V or 12V.

    Horrible Design
Most electronics have large boxes or adapters to plug in. This item has the outlets so close together, they block you from plugging in other devices. The ideal design would have been to have the outlets set up vertrically instead of horizontally, and more spaced apart.

Nice outlet with good USB-C charging
This Commercial Electric 8 outlet surge protector is really nice because of the long cord and the added benefit of good quality USB outlets. I have a house from the mid-90s so the outlet numbers in the living room are lower than is needed in the current digital world. I wanted to get something that would also protect our electronic devices from damage. This surge protector has a flat plug that doesn't stick out too far and a nice long braided cord that also wraps for when you don't need all 12 feet. I like the layout of the plugs as one side has three large spaces for transformer-style plugs and the other side has close-together plugs for standard cords. On the end is a USB C outlet and USB A outlet. I have plugged in a Google Home speaker, a Mac Air, a lamp, the USB A for an Iphone and the USB C for an android. I used the android to check the power output for charging through the USB C and it gave good numbers as shown in the picture. Both phones also prompted that they were charging rapidly and they did charge quickly. Hopefully, I never have to find out how good the surge protection works, but as far as everything else goes, this is a great item.

      High-level Surge Protection
This unit is 11” x 3-⅝” x 1-⅝” (including the on/off switch. The braided cable is 0.39” diameter. The plug is 1.31” diameter , 0.79” thick (excluding the prongs), and exits the wall plug at 45 degrees to the right of down (when the ground pin is at the bottom). The surge protector including the cable weighs 1 lb 15oz. Most of the weight is the cable. The plastic part weighs around 12 or 13 oz. Three of the outlets are placed at 2-inch intervals so almost anything can plug in on that side. The other five outlets are placed at 1-inch intervals which are too close together for anything but simple plugs. In fact, if you plug the end of this device’s cable in one of the closely spaced outlets, the adjacent outlets are unusable. The plug doesn’t cover any of the holes, but it interferes with the plastic part of even the smallest plug I could find. My office has a UPS with surge protection so I use this for my Entertainment Center (EC). I don’t mind foregoing entertainment during power outages, but I still need to protect all my gear from power spikes, and 4000 Joules is a lot of protection (as is the $50,000 connected equipment warranty). Keep your original receipt for 3 years because without it you will not be able to file a claim. Also, if the LED light goes out, that means that a power surge has blown the protection circuit. The device will still work as a power strip, but you should replace it because it no longer provides any surge protection. I love the low profile cord because it allows me to park the cabinet a lot closer to the wall. I bought this for the surge protection and the 8 well-spaced outlets. I don’t need the long cable right now, but I plan on building a custom cabinet for my system and the power cord will run up the wall and then down into the cabinet so I will eventually need 7 feet (a common 6-foot cable would be too short). This unit uses 14AWG, 3-conductor wire in a braided cable which creates a more upscale look. I have 6 components that need power, but 3 of them use 5 Volts. The USB ports on this surge protector are limited to 3A combined so I will use the USB ports for my wireless subwoofer transmitter and my headphone charging station. The USB-C hub sometimes pulls 3A by itself so I have a higher power USB charger for that (it holds my Chromecast with Google TV, my 4k Web Cam with Zoom , an ethernet cable, and USB memory stick). This USB charger is a little bulky so it goes in one of the widely spaced outlets. This surge protector has 4 keyholes on the back that I will use to mount it inside of my custom cabinet. I also have my AV Receiver, BluRay player, and an ethernet switch all plugged in so right now I am using both USB ports and 4 of the AC outlets. The other 4 outlets are for future expansion -- I definitely plan to keep adding components to my system One thing i wish I considered before ordering this power strip is the location of the on/off switch. It is on the end next to where the cable comes out. If I mount this power strip on the side wall of my cabinet, the power cord will be oriented toward the back so it will be a bit awkward to use the on/off switch. I couldn’t find the detailed specifications in the Home Depot listing so here is what is printed on the back of the surge protector: RELOCATABLE POWER STRIP WITH SURGE PROTECTOR INPUT 15A 125VAC Max 1875w 60hZ SJT-B 14AWG/3C TYPE 3 SPD VPR:600V(L-N)/800V(N-G) Class 2 Output: 5VDC 3A, 9VDC 2A, 12VDC 1.5A Type A Output 5VDC 3A, 9VDC 2A, 12VDC 1.5A Type C Output 5VDC 3A in total for type A and type C port MADE IN CHINA CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK USE ONLY INDOORS. RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. DO NOT PLUG INTO ANOTHER RELOCATABLE POWER TAPS OR AN EXTENSION CORD. USE ONLY IN DRY LOCATION This note surprised me: CAUTION-Do not install this device if there is not at least 10 meters (30 feet or more of wire between the electrical outlet and the electrical service panel. This device features an internal protection that will disconnect the surge protective component but will maintain power to the load unprotected. If this situation is undesirable for the application, follow the manufacturer's instructions for replacing the device. The listing also doesn’t include a link to the warranty information which is 2 pages long.
