How does light output compare to a two and four tupe flourecent?

Asked by: Butch
The LED fixture is very close to twice as bright. My 2 new tube 40w flourescent unit read 5.6 1/2 on my light meter. The LED fixture reads 8.4, almost double the light.

How long are the hang chain and the pull chain?

Asked by: vgs8606
Just purchased one on 3/15/2015 and the hang chains measured 23 inches each. Also, there were four S hooks in the package. A few months ago, two units that I purchased only came with two S hooks as stated in the parts list of the instructions.

I did some research on the web as to how many I would need. I found two sites. One had a formula based on the total lumens needed and the second was based on the total watts. Both sites came up with the same number: 12. I bought 14. Only because my ceiling had enough room for them. I arranged them in three rows. The outer rows have 5 fixtures daisy chained and the center has 4. I hung them by first screwing in 8ft long 1x2s. I screwed the 1x2s into the rafters. Then I screwed cup hooks into the 1x2s. I was able to hang the fixtures to the cup hooks by using the provided S hooks alone. I didn't need any chain lengths. One amazing thing: After they were hung I accidently hit the lights with a long 2x4. Three of the lights came crashing down. The ceiling is 9 ft. high. The lights had no apparent damage. I hung them back up and they worked perfectly. Amazing! One flaw I discovered. Flies manage to get into the lights and die. You can see their little corpses when you look up at the lamps. I checked to see if you can remove the lens cover to remove the insects. Someone says you can by squeezing the lens cover and they'll come off. I suspect the flies are getting in through the holes that you use to mount the lights to the ceiling. When I have time I'm going to use some caulk to seal those holes so the flies can't get in. This site gives you the formula to determine how many lights you need based on lumens required: http://www.woodworkingtalk.com/f7/how-many-light-fixtures-do-you-need-50160/ Since I built the workshop and did the wiring myself I was able to put duplex outlets into the ceiling where each row of lights would be. After I hung the lights I just plugged the first lamp into the outlet. All the lights went on. Each lamp can be individually turned on or off by pulling the attached chain. Each row of lights is on its own separate switch and all the lights are on one 15 amp circuit. The draw amps of each lamp is small. I think it's something like .3 amps. But don't hold me to that. I highly endorse these lamps. Well worth the money.

These are awesome on several fronts. First, though, the negative: They ship with a 14" connector. It is pretty useless... needs to be 16". If you are running them across your floor joists, and you try to skip a bay, you will have to jury-rig it to make them work (16 vs 14 inches). The good news is that HD stores sell a different brand/same fastener that is a full 16 inches. The GOOD: Many great things: 1) You can hang them with just a couple of #4 finish nails. (No nail-heads... they don't fit through the links.) 2) Related to #1, you can test how/where to hang them EASILY! Just run an extension cord and hang them all over until you figure it out. Then you can add outlets as and where you need them. I added a few 4-banger and a couple of 2-banger outlets. 3) I found that hanging them across my work area is the best. See the attached photos. I have 5 in a row, 3 bays apart (4 feet), one after the other. They "cross" my work-machines. Because they are four feet long, that means NO SHADOWS. Very clean work areas this way. 4) LOTS of lumens, and they all point DOWN. No wasted light shining up into the joists above me. 5) LOW amperage usage. I have these spread over two 20-amp circuits, both of which run power tools. I did the calcs, and 9 of these run connected (max you can connect in one chain) pulls just over 2 1/2 amps. That is so TINY! Gosh. Even a table saw can run on the same circuit! I have an unpainted basement (for the most part... the prior owners did splash some around a bit here and there). So I went for "100 lumens" as my basis. It is really clean, bright, steady, and just a joy to be in for working on projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent warehouse workshop lights!!! I have to say I was a little skeptical at first becuase I wanted to upgrade the lighting in my 800 sq ft warehouse and I was not sure these would provide enough light. I have a commercial work space with a 12ft ceiling and large roll up door etc. I bought 6 lights, three in each row as you can see in the picture. The brightness of the lights blew me away. Crystal clear light that doesn't need to warm up. The six fixtures provide plenty of light mounted even at 12 ft high! On top of everything else, the installation of these lights is incredibly easy. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with anything else. Nothing can beat the low power savings, installation, and price of these fixtures. At $39 ea, these are an incredible deal.

Here's the thing - not a bad product, but you instead you can buy the Commercial Electric 2-Light 48 in. Gray Textured Fluorescent Shop Light (Model # CESL402-27 Internet #203725928 Store SKU #201627) for $18, and Philips 32W Equivalent Daylight T8 4 ft. LED Light Bulb (Model # 472910 Internet #303040479 Store SKU #1002316041) for $5 per bulb ($51 10-pack). You get more light output (4200 lumens), choice of cool or daylight (numbers above are daylight), replaceable bulbs, instant start, for less than $30 total per fixture. That's what I plan to do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money. Doesn't last. I bought one of these in October 2016 based on all the reviews and the low price. Installed it above my garage workbench and it worked great. Nice and bright, instant-on and all that. I probably used it for about five hours total before I retired my garage projects for the spring. Fast forward to April 2017. It hadn't been turned on for at least four months. I went to do so and nothing. I tested the outlet with a tool and the electricity was fine. The light simply no longer worked. The problem with this thing is that it's completely sealed up with rivets and there are no user serviceables parts. Once it goes out, you throw the whole thing away. Spend a little extra and get a unit that uses replaceable T9 LED bulbs and avoid this one at all costs.

I purchased 9 of these lights for my 2 car/woodworking shop garage and am very happy with them. Very easy to install, I spaced them into 3 rows of 3 attached to roof trusses by hooks and a couple of links of the supplied chains to keep them up as high as possible ( check out attached image). I had to also purchase the longer links to connect them together with the end ones plugged into newly installed outlets controlled with wall switches. The row above the garage door is on a separate switch so I can leave them off when the garage door is up. It looks like daytime inside the garage when they are on, there is a slight delay (maybe a second) when you first turn them on. I am really happy to say that I do not hear any buzzing sounds when they are on and they do not interfere with my receivers am/fm radio stations in the garage, like a different light that I tried out. They are on a separate circuit then the outlets. I do also want to add that they have been up and working for only about a week now and it is early December in Wisconsin with winter just arriving. The temps have been below freezing and the lights are working fine so far. These lights have met my expectations and then some.
