Product Overview

Complete with integrated trim and a medium-base socket adapter, this Cree TW Soft White Dimmable LED Downlight quickly and easily retrofits your outdated and inefficient 6 in. recessed can light. A nearly unmatched color rendering index (CRI) of 90 makes this 12.5-Watt (65-Watt equivalent) lamp one of the most beautiful and natural LED lights ever produced. Add that to the fact that it uses up to 82% less energy and is designed to last 35 times longer than a traditional incandescent flood light bulb and it will make you wonder why you waited so long to convert. It's wet-rated for outdoor or bathroom use, producing 625 Lumens of soft white (2700K) light and retaining its color temperature even when dimmed. Light up your life with colors that are true and natural using the Cree TW Series LED.

Since these are permanently out of stock, when will the replacements arrive?

Likely similar units already exist.

Why are these no longer sold in stores? These are some of the best recessed can retrofits available

Asked by Bob April 23, 2018

Answer

Likely because LED lighting is continually being updated and upgraded. Once a manufacturer discontinues any given model in order to bring (hopefully) better models to market, the older units simply go away.

Why is this Retrofit needed to use a LED Bulb? Is the reason, so you can use a Dimmer?

Asked by WARB May 7, 2017

Answer

We went with the retrofits to replace the LED bulbs in the cans because of heat loss up through the old cans. The retrofits seal the can hole so no air escapes.

Can these work with 277 volt

Asked by Jim March 24, 2017

Some can. Not these, These are aimed at the homeowner market. 277 is a commercial voltage

These need to be installed in a can housing. It depends if your can housing is IC (insulation contact) rated or not.

Soft all the way. I can see no reason why anybody would use day light in their home. That is brighter white light that you see in office settings. I like a very bright feel. I used 9 in my living room all soft white and it is very bright but has that soft warm feel.

Dimming and brightness work well for me
These lights are easy simple to screw into existing recessed lights. I have 6-inch lights and they cover the housing, but just barely. I am happy with the instant brightness over my CFLs and the soft white color. I have added a Lutron LED dimmer, which works well without any buzzing that I can hear anyway. The weirdest part of the install is that they are somewhat deep, meaning the minimum depth is about 6 inches to the top of the screw in bulb attachment. This meant that I had to remove the base housing inside the can and let it hang, then screw in the Cree lights. It does not seem to affect performance, and the Cree directions even note this possibility. The only thing you have to watch is that the wires do not get tangled in the support tabs for the Cree light. A zip-tie seems to help. I bought these and the Ecosmart equivalent to compare, but preferred the Cree in price and ease of installation.

Doesn't get any better than this!
These lights are truly elegant and simple. Super easy installation, and can even help insulate can lights since they can seal to the ceiling (I didn't use any, but a little caulk and you've basically sealed it). I didn't realize how much air was coming through the old lights before! I have these on dimmers and installed them in three levels of my house.

Great product!
Bought these based on Cree's reputation with LEDs. For me, these were very easy to install and took maybe 10 minutes for put 6 of them in. Will definitely be purchasing more for the basement. I do wish they had a seal or gasket though for the upstairs to seal air from escaping into the attic.

I am a licensed electrician and I have installed hundreds of the Cree trim's 6" and 4". It used to be my go to. I have them in my house and they used to work with many different dimmers. Now they must have changed something because they don't work well with certain types of dimmers anymore especially Lutron caseta . If you don't plan on using a dimmer it will be fine. However I will no longer be selling them to my customers.I know several other electricians stopped using them too. It's unfortunate they were the best.

purchased 6 of these on november 30 2015. installed on dec 28 2015 for $ 95. 3 have already burned out. one within 6 months .... the second one before one year. SO from November 2016 to December 2017 we lived with 2 units burned out. The $ 95. service call to replace these two was necessary... since the wife is dang near 80 she thought we should hire an installer.. in december of 2017 the first 2 burnouts were replaced. the installer said it looks like the design of these do not dissipate heat properly. said heat build up causes the failures.............. then showed me units with better design to dissipate heat,,,, DUH.. .much different with fin design on unit......same price as the bad ones.... guaranteed 8 years ...... here it is march 2018 and a 3rd one burned out. guess we will pay another $ 95. to hire someone AGAIN to tear all the rest of these units out and replace with something of better quality.

This retrofit is wide enough to cover a 6” can light hole. Other units I looked at did not work for 6”. The installation was very easy and it was easy to get a snug fit against the ceiling. 5 stars
