Will this product apply a light color over dark grout? We have a bathroom with black grout and we hate it!

Asked by: McNair82
Yes it will. I had dark grey grout, used 11 snow white over. It took 2 coats for really good coverage.

I was ready to have someone rip the old grout out (9 years old) and put new in because of how bad it looked, I tried everything to clean it up but it still looked horrible. I decided it looked bad enough and the fact that I couldn't get a contractor to call me back (tried 9 different contractors 3-5 times without response), I figured I cannot make it look worse than it is. 4 hours later it looked like I had a brand new grout floor in my shower. Because of the small squares and lots of grout lines in the shower floor, it took a lot longer than I expected but $14 and 4Hrs saved me $1,500. A few areas where I didn't get the colorant saturated needed to be touched up after a month, but has been looking good for 4 months now. The directions are easy to follow, use a cheap children's toothbrush when applying the stain/sealer. I bought another bottle because I know it won't last forever, I expect to touch up or redo the stain/seal once every other year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks Like a New Floor Bought this to test out in our master bath since it is the only separate room with tile. Our house is 11 years old and the tile throughout the house has a dated look. To me the dark grout with offwhite tiles created a checkerboard effect. After using Grout Renew, it looked like a different floor. I used Antique White and it took a little longer than I anticipated because I tried various methods to apply. Ended up using a nozzle cap on Grout Renew bottle and putting little drops about 1 1/2 inch apart and spreading it with a soft toothbrush that I had cut off half the bristles lengthwise. This minimized the spreading onto sides of the tile. It took less than 1/5 of the bottle to do about 65 sq ft. I will see how it holds up over the next few months and if still looks good, will tackle the rest of the house. The tile in the rest of the house is all adjoining, so once started, there is no going back. Lesson Learned: I have had both knees replaced so will use a good pair of knee pads next time.

For very little money and a small amount of effort, it makes a huge difference if you've got crummy looking grout like we did. We have lots of ceramic tile in 6 large rooms. The tile itself was nice, but the grout looked awful; it had turned dark grayish/black and made the tile look old. I tried cleaning it with various solutions but nothing worked. I was dubious about this 'Polyblend' stuff, but for only $14, I figured it was worth a try. I will say it was a lot of work as we have a ton of tile floors; easy, but time-consuming. It took us about 6-7 hours to finish the whole thing, and we did put 2 coats on some of it as we went from very dark grout to a very light color (Linen). We found it worked best to do a smallish area, maybe 3'X3', wait about 5 minutes, then use a damp sponge to wipe off the excess. If you wait any longer, the excess product on the tile is harder to get off. The result was fantastic though -- our floors look 100% better and the change is dramatic; it looks like we have new tile! I'm glad we decided to get this rather than get new flooring, which we were considering. This product is well worth it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Never thought it would really work My husband and I purchased a 3 year old home. The master bath has beautiful white tile with not-so-beautiful white grout. I purchased the snow white grout colorant from my local HD just to try. I also purchased a bottle with a roller applicator designed for grout sealer in hopes it would make my application easy. Our grout had been stained from dirty feet and shoes by the toilet, both sinks and in the entry. I have cleaned the grout lines many times before but because of hairspray and dirt I cleaned them again - with no success in making them look new. I let that totally dry and then applied the colorant - WOW - looks like new again. I used the bottle to apply the colorant and then, using a toothbrush, brushed the color into the grout. I did small areas at a time and let it dry before rubbing the excess off the tile. I LOVE this product. I am looking for other colors so I can do the rest of grout in my kitchen and other baths. I just did this yesterday so the true test will be to see how it does over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks like new! I bought this to renew the grout in my kitchen. It really makes it look like the floor is brand new. I used #10 Antique White. As others have stated, this is NOT an easy or quick solution. It took me about 10 hours to do a 300 sq foot area, and my knees and back were about to break. Two days later I'm still hurting! But the result was amazing and I still have about a quarter bottle left after all that work. A few tips: do not waste your money on the grout applicator (a squeeze bottle with a brush on top. It is too wide for normal grout lines and ended up making more of a mess. I abandoned that and went to a toothbrush which was faster. I would suggest using a baby toothbrush to minimize the wiping you have to. The wiping was the worst and most frustrating part. One reviewer said that you can wait and wipe afterwards but I was too nervous that that the product would not come off. Overall, this product has amazing results, goes a long way and is a great price. If you don't mind a little hard work I highly recommend it.

I was initially skeptical this would meet my expectations; however, it covered the existing different shades of brown very well. It is rather tedious because it is necessary to wipe the excess on the tile quickly. I used a 1/4" paint brush (from Dollar General). With back problems, I was able to do a 12 square section at a time, so it took about 2 weeks to finish 2 bathrooms, the kitchen, breakfast nook, entryway, and laundry room. I also bought the same colored caulk and filled in some of the hairline cracks in the tile and it is now not noticeable unless you look really closely. My spouse could not find where I had filled in the cracks! He has commented several times how impressed he is with how great this looks now. We are both very impressed and happy with this product and would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent cover-up for ugly grout! We had travertine tiles installed in our bathroom several years ago. I selected a grout that closely matched the color of the tiles (beige) because I don't like grout lines. The contractor didn't tell the tile sub about this & we ended up with white grout. I thought I could live with it but I have always hated the way it looked. Plus it was an ongoing mess with mold only on the grout. I only give it "average" for ease of installation because it needs to be applied precisely. But that is not a flaw in the product. You will be more successful with application if you have experience applying nail polish and eyeliner! I used a thin brush and wiped off the excess as I went along with a paper towel wrapped around my fingernail. I love the way it looks and it is antimicrobial - so far no problem with mold. In the photo, I have painted the top half and you can see the grout is still white in the bottom half. I like the softer look of the matching grout.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product saved our project After we finished tiling a backsplash in our kitchen (travertine mosaic with antique white grout) we realized that we had chosen a grout color that didn't complement our tile as much as we'd hoped (we should have gone with the recommended linen color). The grout stain has allowed us to both color and seal the grout to the shade that we should have used initially. Thankfully we had sealed the travertine with several coats of sealer before putting it up. It has been a little trying to stain the grout lines and wipe off the excess before it begins to adhere to the surface of the tile. I can only toothbrush on about 4" to 8" at a time and then wipe the excess off carefully. But it sure beats being stuck with the wrong grout! The manufacturer suggested spraying some windex on a cloth and wiping down the surface after 10-15 minutes to make sure that any remnant color wouldn't cloud the tile. It's slow going but it looks great. And now, as it's done, it's done.
