Porcelain Tile Fortified Thin-Set Mortar is not suitable for use with 6" x 36" tile. We would suggest the use of a large format tile mortar and a 1/2" x 1/2" sq. notch trowel. For further assistance please contact us at 1 800 282 8786 option 2.

Can I use this on top of the plywood in my house w/ 12x12 porcelain tile?

Asked by Daniel August 20, 2020

Answers

That is a possibility however depending where it is being installed it makes a huge difference. I would not recommend for wet areas that may need to hold water or in a shower or around the top of a tub platform. Normally in bathrooms it would be better to use plywood then place a cement board or hardiback board on top of plywood then use the mortar mix. Some people use a rubber/plastic water barrier sheet as well especially for bottom of tiled showers.

can this product be used to install flagstone over cement

In most instances, due to their size, Flagstone will require a large format tile mortar like our Natural Stone and Large Tile Premium Mortar. For further assistance please contact us at 1 800 282 8786 option 2.

Will thi bond on old thin set left from removing old tile floor?

Porcelain Tile Fortified Thin-Set Mortar should bond to existing cement-based mortar. However, we would suggest removing as much mortar residue as possible prior to use. For further assistance please contact us at 1 800 282 8786 option 2.

Is thin set ok on plywood with 24x24 porcelain tile

Asked by RWJ June 15, 2020

Answers

Short answer: Yes you can install over plywood. Better if you use concrete board over the plywood. Sometimes the tile will crack or the grout break out over wood. If there are voids on the back of the tile, fill them with thin set as you go to promote adhesion and a quieter walk, not sounding so hollow when you walk over the tile after installation. Every job is different. Hope this helps with yours.

Adhesion issue
I had to use fix-a-floor to re-attach tiles that disconnected from the thin set. 30 days after installation I could hear a slight click when walking across the tile. It got worse and I chose to buy fix-a-floor. The subfloor was screwed down every 6” prior to installation. Durarock was liquid nailed and screwed in with a 6” bolt pattern which avoided floor joists. Durarock was walked hard and showed no reflection prior to tile installation. Tile is secure and rock solid after fix-a-floor injection. I know someone else who had the exact same issue with this product 2 years ago. Buy something else.

Bad Product
has a very adhesion. The tiles came right off. Had to pay the contractor to fix the loose tiles which costed me an awful more money. He said this is a bad product. Save your money and time and buy a better product.

Great thinset
Overall 5 stars. I had wrongly assumed it would dry up very quickly in bucket leaving no time to work. This is my first tile job and so far so good. 75% floor completed and this thinset worked great. I have Porcelin small Mosaic tile and I applied to floor AS WELL AS back buttered the back of the tile mesh lightly for maximum adhesion. Very strong very hard and durable. I also used this thinset to RE.LEVEL (by hand of course with a trowel) a 48 inch long 12 inch wide piece of concrete to assist in leveling PRIOR to installation of the tile. Everything worked very well and very impressed with the strength and adhesion. I laid tile over tile BUT first scarified and sanded the existing tile with a diamond cup grinder, sander, to roughen the surface to make dull and coarse. I then applied a LIQUID concrete binder primer just to ensure maximum adhesion of thinset to NEW tile. All is perfect. I included a photo of floor is 75% complete(but hasn't been grouted yet of course). The scarified pink is the old, the white is the new. Good luck and hope this helps. The key to your job DIY is PREP WORK, and following instructions. Take care good luck hope this review helps some one.
