Product Details

RedGard Uncoupling Mat is a waterproof, vapor-proof uncoupling membrane that can be used for crack-suppression in most tile, porcelain or natural stone installations and can be applied over challenging substrates such as installation over green (young) concrete and single ply 19.2 in. (49 cm) oc wood framed floors. RedGard Mat is designed differently than bonded membranes, with a sacrificial layer of fleece reinforced fabric that shears away or uncouples, when exposed to excessive substrate movement, absorbing stress and preserving the surface and integrity of the tile. The mat's bonding layers have reinforced fleece which locks mortar into the mat, ensuring strong, reliable installations.
  • Elastic, rot proof and resistant to aggressive substances and liquids such as alkalis, solvents and oils
  • Bridges cracks, uncouples floor coverings from their substrates and is suitable as an underlayment for all floor tiles and stone
  • Contains 70% recycled material by weight
  • Allows installation of tile over concrete with high moisture content
  • Suitable for all types of ceramic tile, impervious porcelain, natural stone and precast terrazzo tile

            Works Great
Used in a sunroom with 12x24 porcelain tile. Installed 1/2” plywood over 2x6 deck boards in what had been a screen in porch. Screwed all the wood down tight ti maje the floor as stiff as possible. Used best quality mortar and grout. A year later no cracks in grout or tiles. Will use again

Easy to work with, seems stable so far
Disclaimer: I am not a tile expert. just a regular DIY-er, and have only done a few small tiling jobs in my life. I went in to find Ditra, but all they had was RedGard, so I decided to give it a try in my bathroom with 12x24 inch floor tiles. It was very easy to handle and cut, and went in place with little hassle. I only had one seam on the non-tub half of the bathroom. A couple things to note: make sure your mortar bed has even coverage, and be sure to press the product firmly into the bed. Use a roller if possible. I actually used a regular wooden rolling pin from the kitchen, and it was very helpful. Due to my lack of experience, I had a few areas where the mortar was too think, causing a bump. I was able to roll the excess out the side of the mat, much like an air bubble. RedGard says you can tile on top right away, but I let it set up until the next day. For each section of tile, I used a regular wide putty knife to lay the first coat of mortar to fill the "dimples," then a 1/4 inch square notched trowel to lay down the final bed. The RedGard was firmly bonded to the subfloor. I grouted the next day; that was 2 days ago, and don't see any issues with the grout. My grout lines are very narrow, so I'm not sure if that helps, or why others reported issues with grout. I am very pleased with how the job came out, and everything feels very solid. No one will think Bob Vila or Mike Holmes laid my tile, but any flaws in the job are due to my inexperience, not the uncoupling mat. I plan on using it for my other bathroom next year. Of course I can't predict how it will hold it up long term, but I don't see anything so far that concerns me.

The RedGard matting is thin and easy to install. It mated with the thinset very well. Using a grout float, I was able to push out air bubbles without much effort. The only negative thing I have to say is the roll has a memory when unrolled and corners tend to curl up requiring a small weight to hold them down. I used chunks of pressure treated wood of about 2lbs each. I am very pleased with the insulating quality of the RedGard. Though I am installing a heated floor over it, there was a noticeable difference between the temperature of the bare concrete and the thinset covered RedGard before I installed the heat mat.

Good for the install, now we’ll have to see for the long haul as to if the settling cracks return.
