Questions & Answers

is this a sanded grout?

specifically i have Simplefix Pre-Mixed Adhesive & Grout, bright white is it a sanded grout? i have been told that a "sanded grout" is not good to use with spaces that are less than 1/16" because the sand crystals in the grout may not get all the way in. The spaces in our new subway tile backsplash (individual, self spacing tiles) are just about 1/16", maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more. Is there an alternate grout that you would recommend for these small spaces? Thank you.
Asked by: Martha
Yes - VERY sanded. No mention of that in the product description. Horrible stuff. I had to take it back because it scratched my mosaic backsplash tile and wouldn't fill the spaces. Thankfully I caught it in time and the damage was in a hidden corner and I had bought 5 individual small tubs so I didn't lose too much.

is this ok for shower WALLS? i just need to replace 10 tiles - each is in a different spot.

the original tiling is white, but there are 10 colored tiles placed here and there around the shower walls (very 1960!) thanks

It is not waterproof.

Is this sanded mix ok for 1/16" tile spacing?

Asked by: istadevata
No, it has a coarse texture and it did not fill completely even when applied multiple times. I would not recommend for vertical shower tile.

Hi, I am going to teach a beginner mosaic class and do a 4 x 6 wooden picture frame -- I am looking for a grout/adhesive thinset type of materials that we can slap on the frame and then add the mosaic pieces and be done with it. What experience does anyone have using this with this type of application or what would you recommend that would be better? Thanks!!!! I like the sanded grouts and a darker grout probably -- white gets too dirty.
Asked by: Leslie
I definitely wouldn't use this product. I would just use the fortified thinset that you use to lay ceramic tile. It's much cheaper, you can get it in gray.

I told them I did not think it was correct and he insisted it would work great and its the same as the dry grout you need to mix. It's not real grout and won't set with a chemical reaction. This means it is weaker and not water proof. It started cracking as soon as I installed it and is very weak. Water will weaken it more. I now need to remove all of it and reinstall with a real dry grout. I never advise anyone to use this as it is a poor and bad product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from some of my tiles came loose and did not stick... some of my tiles came loose and did not stick and when I bought it one of the containers were open and the top was dried out, since I would have to make another 50 mile round trip to take it back I just threw it away and went to menards and bought some mastic and grout and redone the job. It was a mess very disappointed

I decided to try this grout for a small counter I was putting mosaic tile on. I figured it would be quick and easy, and I wouldn't have much waste (like with a typical bag where the excess would sit it my garage and eventually harden and have to be thrown away). Overall, I was very disappointed. The good: This grout is convenient -- no mixing. And, it does seem to be very strong. I have some quite small pieces in my mosaic, that were not totally held in place by the mastic where they overlapped the edges. The grout holds them very well, and they feel firm and secure. The finished product looks good. The bad: I'm not a tile professional, but I've done lots of it in the various houses and rentals I've owned over the years. I've never seen anything like this before. Difficult cleanup: This grout has some type of adhesive in it, and that sets up on the tile more like paint than cement. I had to scrape this adhesive off of some my mosaic tiles one piece at a time. Further, the grout is sanded and since excessive scrubbing is required to get the grout off the tile, this sand will scratch some tile. Fortunately, I was only doing a small counter area, but this still took several hours extra to get cleaned up. I also had an issue with pin holes in this grout after it set up. Many of them. Perhaps I didn't get it packed into the joints enough? I'm not sure, but I've never had that happen before. I was able to put a second application on to fill the holes and that part turned out fine, albeit with a lot of extra work. I do see another pre-mixed grout on the HD web site that doesn't mention adhesive on the label. I don't recall seeing that one in my store, but I'm thinking that's the one I probably should have purchased for my application. After using this one, though, I'm not sure whether I'll try that one or not -- I may just stick to the standard mix-it-myself grouts in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Successful recapping grout I have previously reviewed this product after using it to repair a small area of shower tile. The grout had small cracks and pits upon drying. However, I was extremely relieved to find that "recapping" the grout to fill cracks and pits worked beautifully. I'm assuming this was due to the adhesive in the mixture. In researching a fix to this earlier problem, some advisors suggested removing all the flawed grout and begin again. I am so happy to report that simply recapping was all that I needed to do. Thank you to a company representative for contacting me and helping me to achieve a successful outcome! I will definitely try this product again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy this product for grouting The product is like white paint with large rocks in it. It is not thick enough to stay in wall joints, and the sand is too large to give a nicely finished joint. It is also not real cement-based grout. I was also not impressed with the Custom Building Products Tub Caulk sold in the same section. After wasting a day with these products, I went to competitor "L" and purchased Keracolor U grout in a 1 lb. plastic can/tub. It was cheaper, and real grout. You have to add water to the can and mix it with a putty knife or other tool for a few minutes, but then you get good results from real grout.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!! VERY disapointed with everything about this grout. I had a small area of white marble accents to grout (tub said it was okay for marble use) so I thought I would try it. Dries almost instantly to the surface of the tile so you really have to scrub to get it off, which by doing you almost wipe all the grout out of the grout line. The container says it is good for marble. IT IS NOT! Scratched the marble. The container did not say whether it was sanded or unsanded so I thought it would be okay. Its a good thing the marble was white or you would really be able to see the scratches. The grout color was supposed to be snow white but it is more of a dirty water color and has never been wet yet! This product should be taken off the shelves it is so bad. Mix your own, it will be well worth the extra few minutes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love it I am a mosaic artist who uses this product every day. I am able to spread it on my project and then place my tessarae right into it...perfect. I tint it with various paints. It drys completely within 2 days. When partially dry I am able to texture the cracks with various tools to add intererest. After reading the poor reviews I just had to explain how much I love it!
