Questions & Answers

Sanded or not, and does it need sealing

I didn't see anything on the container about this grout being sanded, but the specs here on the home depot page say it is sanded. I'm curious as generally, sanded is for 1/8" and greater, yet this says it can be used for 1/16" to 1/2". So, 1st question is it sanded, and if so then why is it OK to use on 1/16", which is the gap between my shower tiles. 2nd question does it need to be sealed? I've already purchased this (it was recommended by the Home Depot advisor in store) and was ready to grout tomorrow and while waiting read about it being sanded.
Asked by: MikeK
This is sanded. I purchased it. In small writing it states on the container that this is a 'sanded' mix.

Does this grout require a sealant coat?

Asked by: BobG
This does not require a sealer. However, all grout will look better longer if you use a sealer. Just make sure it is fully cured before you seal it.

Is this grout sanded or unsanded?

It doesn't specify on the container or in the description of the product whether it's sanded or unsanded. I understand sanded grout will scratch glass tiles such as a backsplash and I am looking for unsanded grout for that reason.
Asked by: DDAWG
Under features it states sanded.

is this product mold resistant, and is it ok to use on the shower walls ?

Asked by: homes215
Not for shower walks. This is sanded grout. You'll need to mix dry non sanded grout for walls in shower.

This is a sanded grout this is for 1/4 inch and bigger grout .. also IMO this has huge sand particles in it and the grout was not pure bright white it was a yellow white because of the huge sand amounts in it .. states on container 1/8 inch grout well that is incorrect.. does not state it has sand in it !!!!!!!.. so I put this on a wall tile 2 feet by 15feet .. grout looked like yellow and sand particles nasty .. so what I had to do was cut out all this grout then I used the dry poly grout bright white and used a grout additive to mix it and what a difference perfect .. good thing I did not do the complete job with this sanded grout .. I did call the company up and I was told all grouts have sand in them .. well I was not happy .. brought back to Homedepot got my cash back but the cash did not mean much to me what mattered was the mess I had to remove and do the job again..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it...awful experience I had a small backsplash (new install) that I needed to grout and thought I would save a little time and a few bucks by going with the premixed grout. This was a horrible mistake. First, the grout is sanded, even though there is absolutely no mention of it being sanded, which should mean it is not sanded!!! Second, it goes on with nearly the consistency of water. I stirred it up but it didn't really help. Before I could spread it nearly all the grout had fallen off my float. As soft and runny as it is, you can't even really pick it up off of a flat surface. 80% of the grout ended up in clumps on my countertop. Third, it seems to dry in a couple of minutes. Five minutes after application, I was scrubbing hard with a wet sponge trying to remove the excess. Seriously, this grout induces a lot of swearing. Unfortunately, I did not read the reviews before I purchased, and a few others complained it was cracked within a week. Pay the few extra bucks and buy legitimate grout and mix it yourself. It's worth the hassle.

Easy to use with a good choice of colors, I chose the Linen color to grout the wood plank look porcelain tile on the face of our fireplace. It applied easily to the horizontal surface of the hearth, but I did find on the vertical face of the fireplace that the grout seemed a little dry and pieces would fall away as I tried to get the grout into the crevices. So I scooped some grout into a plastic paint tray and added just a tiny amount of water, mixed it well, and this made the grout so much easier to apply, and the addition of the water didn't change the color of the grout at all. This grout does dry quite quickly so be sure to clean the surface of your tile frequently as you go along.

Overall it sets up VERY strong, it will last a long time in the container (couple of years), color stays consistent, goes down easy. I use a 3" putty knife to get it pushed fully into the groove. A 45 degree scrape over the grout lines to remove as much excess product as possible helps too. Do NOT do a large area without stopping to clean the area with a wet sponge! If it dries, it will be very hard to get off of the tile. Start with an area about 3' x 3'. If it isn't setting up, try 3' x 4', etc.

I used this grout to replace some old grout that had chipped away at the base of our shower (where the wall tile and shower base meet.) I applied it with my finger which seemed to be the best way to get it into the corner joint between the two. It worked pretty well and the grout was easy to work with. It was fairly easy to remove the excess grout and then to remove the haze. I put two applications of sealer on and the finished project looks great! I would use this grout again for any future repairs.

My wife & I used this with mosaic tiles made of glass and stone, both of which the product says it works on. It was ridiculously difficult to remove from the stone on the first pass...as we went. However, after we let the grout set up for the recommended 4 hours, the haze was impossible to remove from the stone sections of the mosaic and extremely difficult to remove from the glass tiles. We had to spend about an hour and a half using our fingernails to scrub the remnants of haze off of each tiny piece of glass in the mosaic. This is on only 6 square feet of backsplash. I've de-hazed full rooms in less time. We are DIYers, but we are certainly not inexperienced when it comes to tile & grout. We tiled the whole floor in our last house...2000+ square feet, plus a glass mosaic bathroom wall of approximately 100 square feet, as well as groutable vinyl flooring. We have never had this bad an experience with a grouting product. Wish we would have read the other reviews before purchasing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid the lure of no mixing traditional grout!!! It's NOT worth it. The grout was slightly stiffer than traditional grout but workable, however the clean up is a nightmare! I grouted a 2x2 area and went back and wiped off the surface. A little film was left ...no biggie. Figured I'd get it prior to cleaning the next 2x2 section. Grouted 2x2 more and went back to clean off the surface of the 1st section. The heavy haze had stuck fast and took extensive rubbing to remove. A HUGE waste of time compared to traditional grout! By then the 2nd section was starting to stick like crazy and it was equally difficult to remove. Feeling committed to complete the job with the material on hand I plowed ahead and completed the bath in about 5x the normal amount of time and exhausted from all the extra work required. Completely frustrating and annoying product. It better last for eternity to be worth this. As others have said it is sanded but does NOT clearly say that on the label. Beware!

I was using 1/16 inch joints and I didn't want sanded grout. I started putting it on and it was falling off the wall and I realized it was sanded but I kept going and I regret it now. What a nightmare. Sanded grout looks bad and there is no way it is as waterproof as unsanded. And its not a great option for 1/16 joints but this grout says it works for 1/16 joints. Don't buy this.
