Can you thin premixed grout?

Asked by: Jt
This grout can be thinned with small amounts of water but do not make the consistency too thin. Adding water does not adversely affect the product shelf life.

Customer Reviews

SimpleGrout #381 Bright White 1 Gal. Pre-Mixed Grout is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 537.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I have been in the tile install business for 9 plus years. I use this product if it's a small job ( under two hundred sq. ft. ) And I love it. You need to work this product fast, grouting only 5 to 10 sq. ft. at a time. Work the grout deep into your grout lines. Use the small end of your hard rubber trowel and pull at a 45 degree angle. Try your best not to pull the grout over the whole tile if you are using a larger tile. Keep it close to the grout line. Two large buckets are best for cleanup, one for the first wipe down, and the other for the second wipe down. If your sponge is too wet ring it out and press it between two dry towels. Change water and towels as needed approx. every 30 to 40 sq. ft. Never, never use this product on natural slate, or rough stone. Cleanup can be nearly impossible. Every product has it's limitations.

I followed the directions and did not add anything to thin or otherwise. After it dried it had left little dimples or little sink holes in the grout, places for water to get through, literally hundreds of them, like it had shrunk, also left cracks around the perimeter. I have pictures. I sent the manufacturer a message through their website 2 times, days apart asking what I should do and never received an answer, I got no customer service. I am just going to go over the floor one more time I guess. I have always used the masonry type grout, I think I will just stick with that from now on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Different but durable My first tip: read the lowest ratings of this stuff. Then, avoid doing what those people did. This stuff dries quick and hard! Work in small areas. It's very forgiving, while it's still wet. Keep your float wet. Work at an angle. Use your float as a squeegee. Use both hands to force it into the groves. Don't be afraid to keep your sponge wetter then you would with traditional grout. This stuff is more forgiving. The glaze is a bear to get off but, it looks great when dry. Before you buy, make sure you open the lid to see the actual color. The people at Home Depot did not mind when I did this. I recommend this stuff. It's great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job This grout is very easy to work with and easy to install. It is somewhat difficult to clean off of tiles because it is sticky, so I recommend cleaning very quickly after installation (i.e., have a sponge ready and grout tiles in sections). I don't give it 5 stars because I have used this grout in multiple areas in the bathroom and have had to re-grout or touch up. Most of these issues I think has to do with drying speed: One area which cracked and completely popped out from the between the tiles and mortar was in very close proximity to a vent register, and the heat was on. Cracking and air pockets also occurred during drying on vertical installation. The issues could be unique to the bathroom environment because I have used a different color of this grout for the front entry way, and that has held up nicely for over a year now. Also, something about this stuff makes me feel nauseated and gives me a headache--I recommend working in a well-ventilated area, and if at all possible, have the windows open.

I've laid tile on walls , floors ceilings , pools , bbq's etc since 1979 and ran across this stuff yesterday . Its horrible to work with , all i was grouting was about 10 sq ft on the walls on a bay window behind our kitchen sink . It was a gift for my bride of 40 years for CHRIST MAS . I started applying the grout with a grout float , it was very thick and chalky and difficult to move around like the bagged grout I've used for years . i got about 2 ft up the wall and noticed it drying fast on the face of the tile so i decided to sponge it real quick and make my first pass on the joints too . The joints were pretty fresh and the tile was tough to scrub off with a well rung out sponge . I repeated the process on the 2nd half up the wall and when i went to sponge the second pass on the bottom it had clear run lines everywhere from the acrylic . I scrubbed and scrubbed for the next several hours it was horrible . It was 3 ft from the face of the cabinets and 8 ft tall to the ceiling standing on a step ladder with 1 foot and the other on the counter with my head hitting the ceiling . Every time i made a pass the acrylic runs would come back . Finally i got some towels and started detailing the tile dry and scraping the tougher spots my finger nails and a small putty knife no more water . The tile looked pretty good this morning only a few spots but the joints look horrible, luck for me they are low so i'll re grout today with the bagged grout i just bought . I took fancy grout back to the store and WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS GROUT TO ANYBODY ! by the way this is the first review I've ever left on a product , MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD BLESS !

This was on a wall, so maybe better on floor. I called the company to ask about sealing the grout. They said it didn’t need sealing. Container says nothing about sealing.

This pre-mixed grout product is so much easier to use and clean up, especially when you are working by yourself. The consistency out of the bucket was perfect for the tile i applied to the kitchen walls.

I know the pros know how much it will cover but as a home repair we had no idea. Not sure how long we can keep it.
