Questions & Answers

Do I have to grout if it's only being used as a backsplash?

Asked by: Emmakim
I came up with a great non-grout method for granite tile used as a backsplash and also for windowsills which were originally just sheetrock which needed lots of repair from water damage. I used the 3M clear 100% silicon as the adhesive and the grout. It was simple and foolproof and has now lasted 9 years with no sign of age. This is the same product used to hold giant pains of glass in comercial buildings so it will last.

How successful on showers?

Description states okay for showers, but then also notes not good for areas that get wet. Which is it as I have 3 walls needing to be completed this week in my master bath shower, using 12x12 tiles. Thank you.
Asked by: FirstTimeTiler
For tiles the size you are describing I would not use SimpleMat; I wouldn't use it in a shower wet/high moisture area. I have installed tile for over thirty years and experience has proven there is nothing better than a solid, well prepped (waterproofed) surface for installing tile in a shower. I have fixed hundreds of showers due to failure.

Can this mat be used to lay tile over tile on a floor?

I have tile in my laundry room that is outdated and would love to replace it. If I could tile over tile it would be much easier than to pull up old tile.
Asked by: Sarah
I wouldn't use it on top of an old tile floor. How about putting down some wonderboard, then tiling over?

I used it to tile a backsplash and an entire wall behind the stove, about 36 sq. ft. in all. The mat went up quick and made tiling a snap. I will say however- your success depends on how much prep work you do. The wall needs to be smooth and clean. Working on a house which is almost 100 years old, I had some spots on wall that were a bit bowed out which I should have hit with a belt sander first. However, I threw caution to the wind and in these spots, the tile would not stay attached, so I just used some liquid nails to keep the tiles in place. I would say I had to glue in about 5 tiles out of about 300 tiles- I can live with that. Overall- I can recommend this product, it's much easier than messing around with thinset or mastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow, what a time saver. Ignore the bad reviews and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and my hints. After reading the negative review on this product I took the plunge anyway based on my gut instinct. The material was difficult to cut with even with an industrial quality scissors (I recommend a 3-4' metal ruler on end and utility knife as it's very sticky.) Once cut, it was easy. I believe those that had problems may have not properly prepared the surface where the tile was placed. Kitchen walls are notorious for collecting grease. A thoroughly cleaned wall painted with eggshell finish paint allowed the product to adhere very well. One note, do not rip the masking off the other surface of the material until you are ready to actually place the tile. I believe the adhesive sets when exposed to air, so once again, those with issues probably ripped the masking off and allowed the adhesive to dry out prematurely. I did a small 2x2 foot area at a time. Results we're stunning, saved the 24-48 hour wait before grouting. Love the result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves a Ton of Time and Effort This product is a true game changer for the DIY tiler. We used this for a new kitchen backsplash and really wanted to limit the mess from materials around our new butcherblock countertops. SimpleMat was the perfect solution for our situation. It was very easy to cut and held great to the walls, even over painted drywall. This product is great because it really gave us a much larger working time window. We tackled this project in the evenings after work and SimpleMat allowed us to apply the SimpleMat the first night, cut and place tiles the next two evenings, and grout the next day. All of our tiles stuck to the wall perfectly but I'd definitely use spacers generously, especially with larger tiles. We used 6"x8" tiles and some of them moved around a bit but they were easy to move back into place before grouting. SimpleMat made our project go much more smoothly, easily, and cleanly than traditional thinset. I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone tackling a tile project on their own!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product! real time saver The simple mat is just that SIMPLE. Using this product creates several advantages over the traditional thin set installation. 1) By using the simple mat, you can install the simple mat on the wall minutes/hours/days before you actually install the tile. Whatever your schedule permits. You peel the backing off the simple mat and stick the mat to the wall. Then, when you are ready to install the tile, you pull the protective cover off the front of the mat and you are ready to stick the tile. You can do it section by section or the whole job at once, whatever makes you feel comfortable 2)It greatly decreases the mess when installing the tile. There is no need for thin set, so no thin set mud landing on your countertop as you are installing the backsplash. 3) If you install a tile and it looks a little "crooked", you can reposition the tile so it is straight. 4) The other obvious advantage to the simple mat is the time savings. Just peel and stick! 5) Finally, simple mat lasts. I have jobs that I did years ago that still look like new.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wasn't as easy as I planned but worked great overall I can't believe people are having issues with tiles staying up. My issues was the wall i started on wasn't true and I didn't catch it until I started the 2nd row and I had already pushed th e first row down. I had to really tug on them to get them off the wall and start over but they were sticky enough that the same pad worked again with no issues. Once I got the first row down and straight my wife was really happy because it was easy enough that she felt comfortable doing it. She put 3/4 of our backsplash down by herself. The trick I learned is the glue is strong enough just barely putting it up to hold the tiles don't push the tiles down hard until you get a decent area up and we used a putty knife to adjust them here and there when they weren't completly straight before we pushed them down. We didn't finish th ewhole backspash yet but we did like 25 sq feet in 6 hours and that includes the grouting and 6 cuts. I would use this again for sure as long as it holds up. A buddy of mine used it like 2 years ago and his is still good so I have confidence.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE STUFF for first time installation I have never tiled before. But I'm not stupid or inept! After watching tons of videos I decided to skip some steps and go with simplemat instead of mortar. BIG MISTAKE!!! Simplemat is unforgiving! Working with small tiles on a mat requires a little finessing. Simplemat doesn't allow for any finessing! If one piece isn't quite straight the whole mat is off and you can't wiggle the one piece back in place without 3 hands! After much swearing I decided to yank off the garbage and use mortar. I'm so thankful I did!!! I was shocked at how easy it came right off the wall! It didn't even peel off the fresh paint I put on a month ago! I have serious doubts that my tile project would have stayed on the wall for even a year! Starting over with mortar! What a waste of $55.

If you are considering this - don't. It isn't easier, it doesn't stick - especially if you use a wet saw to cut tile, and it dries out if you peel it back too soon as you add tile. I did have my backsplash with this and it took 1.5 days. I had to glue several tiles as they would not stick. I switched to basic mastic ($11 bucks for a bucket) and did the other half of the kitchen in less than a day. When I added grout to the SimpleMat side, several of the tiles slipped, forcing me to pull them off, realign them and use mastic to stick them back one. Do yourself a favor and don't use this product. It is a huge waste of money and takes twice or more to do the job.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Completely failed I used Simplemat for a kitchen backsplash using glass subway tiles. I followed all directions to the letter, and even asked an expert home depot employee on one of their forums if I could use Simplemat for the particular subway tiles we had chosen on a horizontal kitchen backsplash surface, and was told yes. With a couple of weeks, tiles started to peel off the wall and fall onto the counter. To this date, about 6 months later, tiles are still coming off, and at this point, EVERY tile installed over simplemat has failed and fallen off the wall. About 3 months ago, I tried to post a warning not to use this product in this very customer review section. Apparently HD personnel review your customer review and have to approve it before other customers can actually see it. They did not approve my previous post, so this time I am taking a screenshot of the posting, and if they disapprove my review again, that screenshot and their disapproval email will get posted to their Facebook page.
