Q:For a hose bib attached to a house, is graphite or PTFE packing material best to use to rebuild the valve?
by|Jun 7, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A:Â Thank you for your interest in Danco products and for your inquiry. A PTFE packing, such as model number 80794 is well suited for every day jobs. A graphite packing, such as model number 80793, is more flexible and features a higher temperature resistance, making it better for higher temperature applications like pressure release valves or steam valves.

The Danco Teflon valve packing string is a fast way...
The Danco Teflon valve packing string is a fast way to cure leaks around the faucet stem and bonnet. It is a bit tricky to find just enough string to wind around the stem while still allowing enough room to thread the bonnet back onto the faucet. The repair to the bonnet packing can be made by closing the faucet tightly, gripping the stem nut with a thin wrench, then turning the bonnet nut with a another thin wrench. There should be just enough room to wind some packing string around the stem without taking the whole faucet assembly apart. That's the beauty of this material. The whole repair from beginning to end takes around 10 minutes.

This product worked perfectly for my external hose bib valve stem packing situation. I tried the same brand graphite valve packing rope first and it was a useless product. This material has teflon feel to it. It is not sticky at all, which I thought would be bad since the stuff I used years ago for this purpose was sticky like a waxed twine. But I found i could wrap this around the stem shaft tightly by overlapping the beginning end with the next layer and then holding the final end down while I pushed the nut over the several turns of rope and it sealed up totally. Becaue it is slippery it doesn't stick to the shaft so it is not being churned around under the packing nut with every turn. I suspect it will stay put and stop leaks for a long time. I heartily recommend this product.
