A:  It appears your husband might have install the product too thick. Wood putty is an on and off material you put it on and scrape / wipe it off . If the materials is put on too heavy you will need to get a metal scraper and scrape it flush then sand ,prime and paint.

    by|Mar 3, 2021

A:  Thank you for posting your inquiry. DAP Painter’s Putty ‘53’ is recommend for filling nail holes, dents, and cracks in wood surfaces (wood trim/molding). Based on your commentary indicating: "my husband used wood putty to fill holes in our living room.", it would appear to indicate that that this product was used for drywall/wallboard/plaster repair. This product is not designed or recommended for these types of surfaces, or for applications that require large surface area coverage, sanding or the use of arylic-latex (water-based) primers/paints. For repairs where spreadable product, sanding/fine finishing and standard primer/paint application are required, such as drywall, wallboard, or plaster, we would recommend the use of products like ALEX PLUS Spackling. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you regarding your project and to provide you with some additional guidance regarding the removal of the applied DAP Painter’s Putty ‘53’ product, as well as guidance on completing your project with the proper product/s.

A:  Dent with the head of a hammer and use spackle to fill in this case. There should be no reason to have to remove. I would do a test hole first and evaluate.

      by|Jul 5, 2022

A:  Wood putty on plasterboard walls? You have to be kidding. It is a lot harder than spackle. By the time you sanded it all the plaster board around it will need putty. Just take a screwdriver and gouge out the putty you will make a bigger hole in the wall. No problem now put in spackle or an equivalent. You need to do this as I guess your husband needs to watch more Tool Time and learn how to do manly things.

              Never Dries
I applied the Painters Putty 53 to a 4 inch hole. It was thick and difficult to apply, but I figured I'd sand it later. It's been over a week and it is still not dry. The putty is moist and moveable. I can make impression with my fingers in the soft material.

I bought this product at Home Depot based on what I'd read on the label. It says specifically that it "Resists Oil Bleeding" on the front label. We began using this throughout the house to fill in nail holes and cracks before painting. One room was then primed with two coats of Kilz primer. After the paint dried, I could see dark oily bleed through spots all over the trim and window areas where this stuff was used. As for the rest of the spots where this was applied, this product did not dry! A week after application it was still as soft as when it went on and was coming off when simply touched. It created huge oil rings around all the areas that it was used on. I had to go around to all of the areas, including the already primed spots, and scrape this stuff out. THIS PRODUCT WAS A DISASTER! It set my home painting projects back by hours, DAYS, not to mention the hours I spent applying the stuff around the house to the trim and windows. I contacted Dap, they asked me how I used the product. I used it exactly as it was supposed to be used, and I can say AVOID THIS PRODUCT AT ALL COSTS! I don't know if there were some bad batches of this stuff with too much of one ingredient or another, but please, don't take the risk. I was told I could send the original receipt back to Dap for a full refund. The 6 plus dollars I spent on this could not even begin to make up for the time and effort wasted while using this terrible terrible product and the damage it caused with oil ring marks on the wood and primer.

I needed to replace a window and I needed putty. This putty is what I got and it works great. AND for those of you using putty for the 1st time, here is a hint: 1. make a small snake of the putty for between the window and the casing: take a small blob into your hands and roll it thin between your palms, and put that thin worm into the crevices of where you want to put the glass. When you put the glass into place the putty will prevent rattling. 2. make another fatter snake and press it into the crevice where the glass now is, and use your finger to press it into where it belongs. When done with an edge of the glass, repeat the process with another rolled worm, again pressing into place. And then when ALL the putty is in place, use the spatula to smooth everything out by pressing down. FredPM
