I have a large chunk of wood to repair. About half the size of a standard wall brick. Can I use the entire 16 oz. container as a moldable block of putty? I am not looking for the final finished surface, just something I can "Bondo" in to fill most of the removed rotted wood. It will be covered with a thin layer of outdoor surface putty and then painted.

We do not recommend this use of DAP PLASTIC WOOD All-Purpose Latex Wood Filler for large format applications, such as you describe. For larger format repair (restoration work, rot repair, etc.) the use of more specialized repair products such as two-component epoxies would be recommended.

Customer Reviews

Plastic Wood 4 oz. Walnut Solvent Woodfiller is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 516.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is NOT your typical wood filler This product is more like loose putty that dries hard rather than typical plastic wood (wood particles & glue). In fact, I doubt if there is any actual wood in it. If you plan to stain your work, THIS PRODUCT WILL NOT TAKE A STAIN. If you read the fine print on the package, the product is paintable and stainable *with a solid color stain* (basically, paint). The package declares "Stainable" in large print on the lid, without mentioning the solid color warning part. Very misleading. It also says "Looks and acts like real wood" (again, in large print). Hogwash. The product shoud more accurately be labeled "Wood Filler Putty". Home Depot: bring back Elmer's ProBond wood filler.

I used it to fill finish nail holes in crown molding, it applies easily and wipes off smoothly with your finger or paper towel. The one problem using products in a tube, is as it empties it’s hard to dispense product, I found by adding a folder clip (see picture) it took care of the problem and made it easier to apply all the product. I had been using DAP acetone base plastic would filler, it dries out very quickly, you must keep adding acetone to keep it pliable. The acetone is very hard to breathe and most likely bad for your health.

Let it dry for 2 days then I sanded it. It looked like it was going to fill the cracks in the grain of the wood. Also looked like it was going to fill in some knots and indentations. I had high hopes that my deck was going to look so good when it was sanded and then I could apply my expensive deck paint/sealer. Well I was so wrong. As I started to sand it just came out of the cracks in the grain and most all I had put down with the plastic putty knife. I broke the plastic and switched to a metal one. Either way neither mattered. Stuff did not meet my expectations. My waste of several hours and my money.

I was more than surprised when I bought this wood filler yesterday only to find upon opening the 3 inch deep container today it was only filled half way with wood filler (see picture). Yes, it probably did weigh 32 ounces as stated on the label, but when you are looking at products on the store shelf and trying to judge how much you will need, you look at the volume of the container (which is white so you cannot see into it). I was very disappointed that I will have to make another run to the store to buy more wood filler. I hope DAP will consider filling their containers so all of us DIY'ers will not have to make a second trip for more wood filler.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have bought the product for 50 years. The product works well if you follow the directions carefully. Have some acetone, for thinning, on hand. Use the tube only once; there's no way to thin the product in the tube. The product dries out fast and works best if the consistency is close to that of peanut butter. Keep in mind: a thin coat dries in an hour or less, but a coat too thick, greater than a quarter inch, takes a very long time, sometimes days. When applied carefully, the product is strong, finishes nicely, blends nicely, and takes paint well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective product We went to Home Depot to get an interior/exterior stainable wood filler made by Elmer's that we have used in the past, but HD no longer carries it. We were able to find a few tubs of the old product in the "discontinued" section, then we were directed to Dap Natural Plastic wood latex wood filler and we bought several 32 oz tubs. We are filling the spaces between wooden floor planking in our house. Unlike the Elmer's product which works well for this, the Dap was already semi dry in the tub, and dried out more before we could get it to the crack with the putty knife. Every bit we did get into the crack flaked and was not even adhering to itself. It was also more expensive. Totally unsuited for our project.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product This stuff saggs on a vertical application, doesnt cure well but dies out instead which means cracking, isnt stainable, isnt the color of wood, isnt usable outdoors, isnt usable in a humid room, reacts baddly to oil based paint, does not adhear to the wood and falls out once it's dried, doesnt seal when you try to close the package, dries a very obvious color, smears the color into adjacent grain when sanded, doesnt sand well because its softer than anything but balsa wood and is a waste of money. The lobotimite who signed off on this product as a good enough idea for production is not a wood worker. The lobotmite would realize the product is aweful if it were a wood worker and it would say, "this is terrible, we should try again" a thousand times before settling on this failure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DAP Plastic Wood works wonders!!! I use DAP Plastic Wood wood filler all the time for building props and set pieces in the entertainment industry. Many of the negative reviews I've seen here are based on not understanding the product or how to properly use it. Used correctly, this stuff is fantastic! It cures quickly, sands beautifully, and takes paint with ease. Thanks, DAP, for producing a terrific and reliable product. Keep up the good work!!! (Oh, and for those complaining about the can being 'half empty'... that's how it's supposed to be! The space is for mixing/thinning with acetone and adding color.)
