will wood glue stick to repaired area?
Asked by: Zeke
Once the DAP Plastic Wood has fully dried, wood glue, similar adhesives. as well as wood finishing products such as: stains, primers, paints and protective coatings will function as if they were being applied to natural wood products.

Plastic Wood has been the defacto standard wood filler for as long as I can remember, and my "go to" product for prepping holes or cracks in furniture, trim, or paneling prior to painting or staining. The main benefits are its strength, stain-ability, and quick-dry formula. On the flip side you need to work quickly, add acetone from time to time, and purchase only what you'll use for the project because it will harden up over time, even in the tubes. With that in mind, I purchased a 4-ounce can of the Dap product in white to prep new trim and shelving in my dad's garage. Unfortunately the can appeared only 1/2 filled and I soon ran out. So I ran back to Home Depot and purchased a 2nd can. Before using, I confirmed it too was only 1/2 filled. Assuming the filler is not as dense as milk, I carefully weighed 4 ounces of fresh 2% and poured it into the empty can. It took up 90% of the container. (Photos attached) So I cannot recommend the product as a good value until someone explains this weight discrepancy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Product itself is great...DO NOT buy the squeeze tube I have used Plastic wood for the last few years and have had great success with it. I typically buy the small metal container but this time I chose to purchase the squeeze tube. BAD IDEA. I have had the same experience as other posters below. The product at the top of the tube was really gritty and half dry. I squeezed about 1/2" of product out of the tube and "POP" the entire bottom of the tube blew out. I had a giant glob of plastic wood sitting on my hardwood floors (wiped right up, so not a big deal, but if I had been on the carpet portion of the floor it would have been a mess). I ended up squeezing the entire tube worth of product out through the bottom into a plastic dish and completing my project, but there was no saving what was left and my project timeline got extremely condensed. Great product but DAP needs to do some serious work on the squeeze tube packaging.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Don't do large holes with a putty knife Before you get up on the ladder and start slapping this stuff on your woodpecker holes, be sure to do a test run on something first. The plastic wood isn't like drywall patch. Its kind of like playdough that got dropped in sawdust! Your putty knife won't do what you expect it to do - sexpcially if you are patching a large hole. I recommend using your hands (see my video attached) when doing large areas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fills the Bill Nicely I bought this product to repair a window sill that my puppy had chewed. Application involved several layers but that was no problem. The product dried fast and I was able to prime and paint with ease.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not what I needed This review may have been better, Accept my application was somewhat experimental and I did not know if it would work in the first place. This review is mainly to inform others with a similar application. this is an exterior rated product, I tried using it to fix some dry rot on my fascia boards. I applied the min-wax wood hardener first and then used this over it. Once dry, I sanded it....sands very nicely, then painted with exterior paint....takes paint very well too. However, 3 weeks later the wood filler popped loose from my fascia........long story short, I just ended up replacing the bad sections of fascia. This is the result I had expected, but I often try experiments like this, just to see what happens. I only give this a "GOOD" rating because the product does not offer a complete exterior application. I think the PC WOODY Product sold online may be a better product for my type of application (that is yet to be seen), but you can never go wrong with just replacing your wood when possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have bought the product for 50 years. The product works well if you follow the directions carefully. Have some acetone, for thinning, on hand. Use the tube only once; there's no way to thin the product in the tube. The product dries out fast and works best if the consistency is close to that of peanut butter. Keep in mind: a thin coat dries in an hour or less, but a coat too thick, greater than a quarter inch, takes a very long time, sometimes days. When applied carefully, the product is strong, finishes nicely, blends nicely, and takes paint well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fills in cracks....THEN CRACKS!!! Useless. Tried using this product to fill in gaps between the boards I used on a few reclaimed wood tables I made. Gaps were very small at very most 1/8 inch so I figured this would do the job. You have to get in in the cracks quickly or it turns into sand if manipulated too much, so it took a while to get it to make the surface smooth. Finally I got it looking great, and it continued to look great for a few days...then it dries out and cracks and falls out of the table in sections. I even covered one table with a spar varnish in the hopes it wouldn't crack but it still cracked all the way through the varnish. Now i have to resand the entire 3 projects and go back and try Woody Wood on Minwax. Clearly there is no flexibility and or this is not hard enough to stay attached to the wood. What a waste of time.

I'm a pro woodworker and have used this filler for years. it is difficult to get good results with this product, if you don't know what you're doing, however, if you follow the instructions, you will achieve the desired result. This WILL dry out fast, so keep some acetone handy and CLOSE YOUR CAN EVERY TIME YOU TAKE SOME OUT! Over fill the holes, cracks, seams or whatever you are filling and then sand after it dries THOROUGHLY! If it's wet on the inside it will just wipe off. When sanding, remember: motion is more important than pressure! Use a fine grit (min 220) sand paper and LIGHT pressure. This stuff will sand out like really soft wood. If you don't want it to stick to the surrounding surfaces, tape them off. Mix it well before using it, because it uses a fast evaporating solvent (like Acetone). Once it's dry you can sand or scrape it off. Use a darker tone than your raw wood because it will only stain within limits. "Stainable" refers not to the ability to match the surrounding wood's absorption capabilities (that would be impossible to achieve) but rather to chemical compatibility with solvent based stains. That way, the filler won't repel the stain, like a silicone or epoxy filler would. This is, IMHO, one of the best fillers in the market, but you have to learn how to use it properly. Probably not that easy to use for occasional weekend worriors.
