A:  Thank you for posting your inquiry. Plastic Wood is sub-brand of products in DAP's wood repair product line. We are not clear as to which specific product/s you are referencing as "the regular DAP plastic wood". Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for posting your inquiry on DAP Plastic Wood Professional Solvent Wood Filler. While the product is still "wet", it can be removed with solvents such as acetone. After drying, it must be cut, scraped, sanded away or otherwise mechanically removed. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

A:  It's alright for filling wood holes, but not for laminates.

      by|May 4, 2022

A:  I've used this product for exactly that purpose. I made the mistake of not scraping off enough of the rotten wood and left some loose pieces and of course, some of the Plastic Wood didn't bond. My mistake. I was more careful and made sure that I had removed all of the rotten stuff and I was down to good clean wood. I applied the Plastic Wood and it held. I then sanded it and painted it and it has been fine and that was over five years ago and it still looks fine. Good Luck!

A:  Thank you for posting your feedback. The DAP Plastic Wood (All Version) is specifically designed and recommended for use as a wood repair filler on minor/cosmetic repairs. DAP does not recommend this product or other similar wood filler products we offer for large or deep wood rot repair applications. For these type of more extensive/complex repairs, the use of two component wood repair epoxies and their accessory primers would be recommended.

      by|Apr 26, 2021

A:  No. Better to use an epoxy product.

        by|Mar 26, 2022

A:  I believe this product is not suit for replacing large sections of rotted wood. My experience is that it is a great filler for nail holes and imperfections in wood. Product dries too quickly for a large area.

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for posting your inquiry. For this type of application ("between" coat filling/sealing), the use of the DAP Plastic Wood All-Purpose Latex Wood Filler (water-based formula) would be recommended, as the solvents in the Plastic Wood Professional Wood may interact with freshly applied polyurethane. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

A:  Although Plastic Wood is an excellent product, your best choice would be a putty type filler. Your floor will be subject to expansion and contraction and solid fillers tend to come loose over time whereas soft fillers tend to give and take with the movement of the floor. I've found that they are much more likely to last at least until the floor has to be refinished again.

            Deceptive packaging
This product is only half a can, in my case a little less. I think all the air in the can dries the product out. It was so dry there was no way to get it on a knife. It would be completely dry by the time you could get it on. I bought it for a butcher block countertop I built. I had to use my fingers to quickly push the product into the gaps. 75% of it turned into a crumbled mess and ended up on the floor. The rest dried out in the can. You get one use before its garbage. Did not sand smooth.

Thank you for posting your feedback. DAP Plastic Wood Professional Wood Filler is filled by weight (NET WT.), not by volume (fl. oz.). Thick “putty/paste-like” materials such as this product use a mass-based unit of measure to display the amount of the product in the packaging, i.e., “NET WT. 4 oz (113 g)”. This practice is in line with the requirements of the Federal Trade Commission. The exterior dimensions of the can (Volume: fl. oz.) do not reflect the product package's claimed/communicated fill rate (NET WT.). To properly measure the fill rate of this product, the entire contents of the can would need to be removed and weighed on a scale. Relative to the size of the package, the observed fill rate you describe would be considered normal for this product. As this is a solvent-based formula, it requires additional “head space” for solvent expansion, this internal volume is designed to accommodate the fluctuations in the can headspace pressure, due to temperature changes (to prevent the lid from losing its seal). Plastic Wood has been packaged in this manner for decades. We are not clear as to how one could conclude that a product which clearly communicates the legal fill rate is “deceptive”. If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, the product may be returned to the point of purchase or returned directly to DAP for a refund of your purchase price. Instructions for this process can be found on the product package. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP
              Doesn't shrink, reconstitutes with acetone
Been using this product for years and it has always served me well. From most of the reviews I'm going to chalk it up to user error and not product quality. If used to fill large holes or deep cracks, best practice is to add in thin layers until built up. Using large amounts at once will cause it to shrink, compromising the bond leading to failure. Stop blaming others from your own ignorance and or incompetence.

                  Bad Experience!
Brand new 4 ounce can was opened and the putty flowed outward and had to be pushed back in to mix. The can was only half full. I didn't expect a lot of putty from a 4 ounce can but I only had some cracks to fill on a 2x4x6. The 4 ounce half of a can barely did the job. I would not buy this product again.

This is the second can of Dap that I purchased where the can is not completely filled. The first one had a huge air bubble in the middle so the can was only partially full. The white can I purchase by curbside pick up because of the covid restrictions. When I opened the can it was less then half full. I will be returning when I can and NEVER purchase Dap again. I could understand the air bubble in the first can, but two times is enough chances!!

Thank you for posting your feedback. The DAP Plastic Wood Solvent Professional Wood Filler is filled by weight (NET WT.), not by volume (fl. oz.). The volume of the can is over-sized to allow for solvent vapor expansion, "in can" mixing and the addition of thinning solvent (acetone) as well as stains or colorants. The visual appearance of the product's fill line that you reference, would be considered normal for this product. Should require have any additional questions, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP Plastic Wood. Based on your description of the product's texture, it would appear that you may have purchased material that was not properly sealed or aged/beyond its normal shelf life. If the package is not properly sealed or as the product ages, it will thicken/dry to the point of becoming difficult/impractical or impossible to use. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you, when calling in, please have the product package available, as we will need to collect production information from it and so that we can reach out to the store location where you purchased this product. Easy to use
It was easy to get out of the can and spread very easily on the wood. What I used it on was 95% MDF. After it dried It was easy to sand smooth.
