Questions & Answers

How thin can you plane boards with this item?

I have some nice scrap pieces that I need to take down for a project. The scraps are about 3 feet long and 9/16 in. thick. Many are bowed and I will probably have to take them down to about half that thickness.
Asked by: DeadMuleJohn
The thinnest I can get is about 1/2" as the planer comes. There are ways to get it much thinner, but not as the planer is equipped.

Can this item be affixed to my current dust collection system.?

My dust collection system is a mix of metal and plastic hoses at a 4" dia. I would like to attach this machine to this system with a hard plastic adapter and a flexible 4" hose.
Asked by: Bill
Yes. It really does not need the benefit of suction though. The blower ejects the chips well enough alone. Certainly connect it to something though, if not, it creates quite a mess.

Hello everyone, I bought a brand new Dewalt planer dw735x. I opened it to check to make sure nothing was damaged during shipment. The dust shroud has sawdust in it. I did not expect to see sawdust in brand new item. Did anyone have the same issue? Thank You!
Asked by: Quoc
A Dewalt product expert said that a brand new planer should not have sawdust.

My deck boards are 2"x6"x16' cedar. I plan to pull them up and resurface them. Will this plainer pull a 16' board thru or will I have to hand feed it? Deck is 30'x14' so buying all new is out of the question.
Asked by: papajim
The planer will feed any length board as long as you meet the minimum length. You'll be fine. With 16' boards I strongly suggest you have an infeed and outfeed support of some type, not just the small metal ones that came with the planer.

15 Amp 13 in. Heavy-Duty 2-Speed Thickness Planer with Knives and Tables is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 132.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Limited info on dust collection options I have a Sears Craftsman with a 2-1/4” hose and found there is an adapter that will work for both 2-1/2” and 2-1/4” hoses if you are not using a 4”. The Woodstock W1044 has an outside diameter (3.946"). The Dewalt DW735 planner 4" / 2-1/2" dust port adapter has an O.D. of 3.950" therefore the W1044 will not fit. The fix I found was to use a (white thin wall Sch 40) PVC 4" (45 degree) Street Sweep which has an I.D of 3.960" allowing it to slip over the Dewalt (3.950") 4" hub and slip over the W1044 (3.946") 4" x 2-1/2 reducer. Warning, a PVC 4" Street Elbow will not work because the collars on the Elbow have an I.D of 4.220". Just an FYI, the W1044 (4"x2-1/2") reducer is made for a 2-1/2" hose connection, but a 2-1/4" hose can also be used by slipping it into the 2-1/2" reducer (vs. slipping a 2-1/2" over the outside of the 2-1/2" reducer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Damaged I live just outside of Panama City Florida and I am dealing with post hurricane clean up. Plenty of trees down that I can make something out of if I had the tools. I've been wanting this planner for years and my wife finally decided to buy it for me for Christmas. I was so happy until I tried to mount it on the dewalt stand. When I was positioning the planner over the mounting holes the right back corner of the planer was scraping into the top of the stand leaving scratches in the wood top. That's when I noticed that the base is bent.I didn't notice any damage to the box at first so I double checked it and the box was fine. I'm not sure if it will affect the quality of the cut or interfere with the inter-working of the machine so I haven't turned it on or tried to plain a board. I tried calling but can only do a live chat via the computer M-F 8-5. I've tried at work but I guess our security is not allowing it to connect with anyone and I can't chat on the weekends because they are only available M-F.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CONFUSE I just bought this planner, feels well built heavy, sturdy, nice. I am confuse because I bought model DW735X ( but inside the box is DW735 cheaper version )

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent value and great quality I spent about a month doing research on a planer. While researching it cane down to price and features. And while this was significantly more expensive than other brands and even the other dewalt planer it was worth the investment. With that said, the planer was pretty much ready to go out of the box. The only thing I needed to do was attach the outfeed extenstion tables and make sure they’re leveled with the planer. The quick dial presets make it easy to preset a desire thickness for your piece. The crank system was a bit stiff but after several uses once the grease lubricated the gears it was smooth and easy to operate the thickness adjustment wheel. Feeding of the work piece is easy, although I did get a little bit of sniping, it’s easy to compensate by feeding the boards at an angle rather than straight. This not only helps with the sniping but helps the planer use the blades evenly. It’s a bit loud and ears, eyes and nose protection should be used. When the piece comes out it is smooth and is almost ready to glue. With two speeds to help you work your piece this is awesome. All I can say is I’m impressed as extremely satisfied with my investment. Wether you’re a craftsman or a serious diy’er this tool is a must have for anyone who is serious about the quality and isn’t willing to compromise with quality results. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best portable planer on the market I've owned this planer since 2007 or 2008, and couldn't be happier with its performance. As a home remodeling professional and hobbyist woodworker, this model handles everything I need it to from quickly planing construction lumber to putting a fine finish on hardwood for furniture. Durable, precise, and powerful. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its worth it I bought this over a year ago and this planer is worth every cent. It produces a great surface on both hardwoods and softwoods. This is a good planer for a hobby wood worker or a small shop because most of us will not be surfacing boards that are more than 13 inches wide so this gives you the performance as those high dollar 20 inch planers. This planer is easy to use I particularly like the indexing settings on the side that assures repeatability in surface thickness. Also the powerful ejection of the chips will make sure that dust collection hose is not clogged. Very easy to hook to a shop vac. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Benchtop Planer I've owned this planer for several years and would definitely make the decision to buy it all over again. The two feed rates are great for roughing and finish passes, and there's no discernible scalloping. Knife changes are super easy and straightforward. The bed is dead flat, and produces great results. It's easy to adjust with the four screw posts driven by the one crank and doesn't require being locked down in between adjustments like lots of other planers do. That saves lots of time and virtually eliminates snipe either you get the infeed/outfeed tables set up right. The dust extraction is phenomenal - this thing will inflate my 1.5 HP dust collector bag even if I don't turn the dust collector on! Just be careful standing downrange if you don't have it hooked up to a dust bag or dust hose, because you will get pelted with shavings. The only two compaints I have is that at some point I noticed the outfeed table has a slight bow to it. I don't know if I missed it during assembly, or if I damaged it myself, but at this point I think it's out of warranty for me anyway. The other is that during cold weather the feed rollers don't like to grab stock, and the workpiece can get stuck. Waxing the bed and hitting the rubber rollers with a heat gun on low for a few minutes get you back up and running. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job I've had this for about a month, and have run about a dozen, rather cupped, 1"×10"×10' milled red oak boards through it. It absolutely ate through everything, zero issues, and left a great finish. A bit of snipe, but that could have been caused just as easily from poor loading on my part. The only thing I will say, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GAME PLAN FOR THE CHIPS! Hooking a shopvac to the port isn't going to cut it. I recommend some elbows and a good sized bag, or an actual dust collection system. Or just simply outside and let'r blow! I failed probably 3 attempts at dust collection in my "shop" before finally taking the box it came in, duct tapping an old house filter to the top, and routing a 4" hose into it. Surprisingly worked very well, and just threw the box in the fire when done. But since, the bag has worked best. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
