A: Hello Markjachim Thank you for your contact. We apologize for any trouble or inconvenience in finding information. It would certainly seem logical that a 15 gauge nail being thicker would be better to drive through a hard wood than a thinner 16 gauge nail. However, somewhat surprisingly, this is not always the case. It is not taking into account the occasional necessity of deformation that will arise. Put more plainly, there are hard grains and knots in the hard wood. A 15 gauge nail will have no choice but to go through such areas which given the obstruction may not have a high probability of success. Compare that to a thinner gauge nail which would deform around the harder area and still drive through the softer area and have a high probability of success in those areas.
