Product Details

Eliminate the guesswork with this new Center Sensor Stud Finder that has a detection depth of 3/4 in. for wood and metal. While traditional stud sensors locate the edge of the stud, this 1 locates the center for a more efficient read, even when held at an angle. The sensor is constantly calibrating to save time during use. Once the stud is located, an audible alert and directional LED arrows clearly notify the user. You can easily mark the center of the stud with the center marking channel.

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Tammy, Thank you for your contact. We apologize for any trouble or inconvenience in finding information. The stud sensor will not detect objects in concrete, mortar, block, brick work, plaster, carpeting, foil- faced materials, metallic surfaces, or ceramic tile.. Best Regards Sherri C DEWALT

Q:Can this item find studs under shingles at an old cabin

    Answer This Question

A:  Yes, seem as if it would, "detect studs behind any surface."

A:  No! Do not waste your time buying this! I use mine several times even build a dummy wall. There were times that he would pick up a stud other times it would not. Don’t waste your money!

A:  Hello Rick, Thank you for asking your question. This stud finder will only detect through 3/4 inches so I'm not so sure that it will detect the studs since most shingled structures have their shingles mounted on an angle. I'm afraid this one might not do the trick. The best thing is to contact Dewalt Customer Service at 1-800-433-9258 and talk with their tech or customer support. I'm sorry my answer did not give you what you might wanted to hear, but it is better to be cautious then not. Thanks again for asking your question. This stud finder did the job. We were removing wallpaper on a dining area wall and putting up stained pine boards. Needed to insure that the nails hit the studs and this made quick work of this part of the project.

Thin, light and easy to use – with lots of lights and beeps to help or confuse you. The 3/4” thick plastic unit fits comfortably in the hand so the trigger is perfectly located for the index finger to press. The cover easy removes without tools to install the two AAA batteries (included, though not name-brand.). Works very well, with just a few false alarms while accurately finding the center of studs even on walls with polyurethane foam insulation. The one complaint I have is with the instructions: there is no text, only “universal” cartoons that are challenging to decode. There are 5 LED lights in total. One green LED shows power when the trigger is depressed. Two yellow, arrow-shaped LEDs show when you are near an edge of the stud (left or right) and which direction to move to find the center of the stud. When centered, a RED LED lights up. There is another RED LED that lights up when the unit detects a wire carrying AC voltage, along with a continuous beeping sound to signal the danger, a very handy safety feature. Unfortunately I found that to be fairly unreliable for pinpointing any wires, since it would signal when anywhere within 6-10 inches of the wire – and sometimes when nowhere near the wire. Still, Id rather a false alert than no alert in the presence of the wires. As a stud finder I found it very accurate, and the “mechanical” design of the unit is excellent. It includes a hole for marking the center of the stud inside a channel 1.5” wide, the typical thickness of a stud. All-in-all a well-designed, reliable stud finder at a competitive price.

Easy to use, finds stud centers quickly, with added safety of electrical wire detection. If you’ve been suffering with a simple magnetic stud finder, or even an older electronic model, you owe it to yourself to try DEWALT’s 3/4 in. Stud Finder (Model # DW0100). Hold it flat to the wall, press the center button, and begin sliding. The black pad on the back (see pic) slides smoothly and did not mar the paint. The LEDs and audible alerts tell you when you’ve found something. See pics: - Green LED - Power is on - Yellow LEDs, Left and right - directional arrows indicating that you’re near something - Red center LED - Found the center of the stud! - Red LED on the right - Found an electrical wire I really like the security of the electrical detection - I was surprised how many wires I found in some places. This makes the device useful even when when installing hollow wall anchors to ensure there are no wires where you’re about to drill. It will handle depths up to ¾”, which should be sufficient for most modern drywall, but for just a couple dollars more DEWALT offers the model DW0150 with a 1.5” depth capability. That will handle thicker walls (old homes, lathe and plaster, panel-covered drywall, etc) Other nice touches: - 2 AAA batteries are included - It’s easy to install and replace the batteries without tools - just pry open the clip at the bottom - Can’t accidentally leave it on and wear out the battery - it’s only active when the button is pressed The only minor nit to pick is that the audible alert is an annoying, screechy sound. But you certainly won’t miss it! And you’ll stop as soon as you hear it, so you don’t have to listen to it very long. Highly recommended despite that.

            Great stud finder
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Has a hole in the center to mark the stud with ur pencil. Uses AAA. The AC detector is convenient.

              Reasonably accurate, strange AC behavior
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a reasonably accurate stud finder. I tested it on walls of my 1970s house, built with standard dimension 2x4s, 1/2” gypsum drywall, and countless layers of paint, some probably lead-based. In each test, I used the tool 3 times, approaching the target stud from varying sides/angles, and marked each result with a number. Photos of the results are attached. The results in each case were grouped within about a 1/2” spread. In one case I had access to the wall cavity and measured and marked the actual location for reference. The tool did behave strangely when detecting AC electricity. In one location it detected AC where there was none, and in another location, I got inconsistent results when detecting near an energized, exposed romex cable to get the AC alarm to react. In other words I may not trust it to alert me to nearby electrical cables.

Okay detector, not quite perfect though.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The good: - Detection mechanism works well, finds studs every time without having to recalibrate. - Left/Right indicators with a separate center indicator is awesome, makes pinpointing the middle easy - Audible alarm if you can't see the lights for center. - Marking hole to keep pencil on target. - Batteries included and AAA's instead of the usual 9V which are easier/cheaper to replace. - Feels decently durable, could probably take a few tumbles without issue. The bad: - Not very ergonomic, awkward hand position with the button in the center and how thin it is, can't maintain a comfortable grip. Would prefer it a bit thicker with a side button. - The AC detection never once went off even going over known wire locations with load on those wires, not sure what's wrong with it. - Rear slider is a hard plastic, will probably last longer but there's some risk of scratching up painted walls and it's rough to slide. - Battery compartment is the entire front of the unit, feels a bit exposed/fragile when opening it. - Plastic packaging is annoying to open. - Instructions leave a lot to be desired (illustrated but no words), although it's a fairly simple device. Overall: Given it's purpose is detecting studs, it does that job quite well. However the overall product slightly misses the mark.
                  Size Matters!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] What I really like about this Stud Finder... SIZE. It simply fits your hand. Yeah, it’s just a stud finder but this finder places U in the middle of the stud not outer side of studs for U to determine the center. There is a very nice audible as well as arrows to indicate which direction to center. There is a different audible when electrical is near. Also, there is a circle provided to allow U to mark your center location. It’s a great tool.

                    Great features
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Revived this stud find about a week ago. I Was super impressed about how slim it was. I used it to hang my tv on the wall. It was nice and compact to slide in your back pocket while using my Dewalt drill. I like how they put light up arrows on each side pointing you in the direction of the stud. I had no worries about hitting a electric line because of the electric notification built in. It was a nice change how Dewalt put the button in the middle of the stud finder instead of the side, it seams to point you in the stud direction better. Extremely pleased and would highly recommend! Once again Dewalt thought of everything!!!
