Q:why does the #6 have a 9/64 pilot? That's too big for drilling a pilot hole into wood for a #6 screw.
by|Jan 31, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello Snarltoof, This set is a tapered set and for that reason the pilot is 9/64" for a #6 (hard wood). There is a straight bit for #6 and it's a 3/32" pilot (soft wood).

          Large amount of deflection
Drill bits have a large amount of deflection and wobble. I have other Milwaukee bits and countersink bits that work great, but these were a disappointment. Waste of $30

Broke During 1st use, after about 14 holes
This broke during my 1st use, while drilling holes into pine 2x4. The black piece (that fits in drill chuck) separate from the drill bit - it is a separate piece that is compression fit (no screw or anything to tighten) I was using a Ryobi 18v battery operated drill at the drill setting. Worked great through the 1st few holes, but then chuck piece disconnected as shown in the picture. Disappointed as I thought the quality would be better (previous countersink bits have lasted me years).

I should have read the 1-star reviews first
I experienced the same issue that several others here have reported going back over a year now. After drilling 3 holes in a soft pine 2x4 the shank on the #10 bit tore right off the bit shaft on the 4th hole, leaving the bit embedded in the wood.

                Design Fundamentally Flawed
The #8 bit broke while drilling the third hole in 1" x 6" Douglas Fir. The problem is the screw type tapered drill bit. It draws the cutter uncontrollably fast into the wood and the impulse generated when the cutter hits the wood shears the drill bit from the hex shank. I had to use a pair of Vise-Grip pliers to remove the drill bit. I bought this set due to the four cutter countersink, but the screw type drill bit renders the product worthless. Had they used a typical twist drill bit, the product would likely never fail. No amount of quality control can overcome the flawed design choice of using a screw type drill bit.

                  Unfortunate
I’ve been a loyal Dewalt fan for a long time. Made this purchase without hesitation and was made to regret it after the #10 bit broke on the 4th hole.

broke after 1 hour of minimal use
Was using this to counteraink holes on some shutters. The shank on these drill bits slides over the bit itself i found after minimal use the shank slid off and my bit got stuck in mt shutter. Almost as if the collar is held on by an adhesive. I tried re attaching collar and found that its a goner. its unfotunate that this will Interupting my work flow and impeding my deadline

#10 bit broke loose on first day...same issue many others have reported
The bit broke loose while putting a bench together. Many others have reported the same issue. Ryobi had a set for half the price but were sold out at the local Home Depot so forked up the $20 for these in order to finish a project. You'd think with so many of the same complaints they'd address this problem.

                        Broke during first job
Very disappointed, not only in the product but also Dewalt after sales support. It turns out DeWalt does not provide warranty for accessories. This product broke halfway through a cabinet installation. You can’t tell me it’s normal for the quick release shaft to detach from the drill bit. This is just poor craftsmanship.

                          It snaps
The #6 bit snaps while adjusting for the depth. Just used it normally for like a week. Expecting much more from dewalt for quality but this product let me down. Now i need to buy another one, what a waste

                            Broke on first use.
Have been using these tapered bits for years. They are fragile, but I usually break them by tipping over the drill, or hitting another screw while drilling. Not this time. Bit came apart the first time I put it to wood. Not good for a nearly $10 bit.
