Q:I have a polisher and want to use it for sanding.

        Answer This Question

A:  You have to be aware whether your polisher's head is adhesive or hook and loop. Hook and loop means your your polisher head has one side like the hook part and the pad has the other part, the loop part. Together they form the hook and loop which is similar to velcro.

A:  The tool must also be a hook and loop system. If so, then the disk works like Velcro. The disks do not have adhesive, so there is no residue. They will not work if the tool has an adhesive style pad.

A:  yes it does. I have not had any issues at all.

A:  It's basically the same system as Velcro, I use the sticky back discs as well.

A:  We do not see an issue using the 6" polisher with a 6" sanding disc. However, it is not its intended purpose. We would like to point out a few things though. 1. The 6" polisher does not have a Hook and Loop base. This means that one will have to added. This could take away from the holding power of the sanding disc base. 2. Because the base does not allow for dust collection, the dust build up could lead to premature overheating of the disc and shorten life. 3. The polisher has a max RPM of approximately 4800 RPM's. A 6" ROS sander will have an approximate RPM of 10,000. Because the polisher rotates at a reduced RPM this could lead to excess build up of dust and glazing of the sanding disc, thus shortening the life of the sanding disc.

Q:I want to try sanding the back (flat) surface of a lapidary cabochon prior to polishing. Diamond wheels, laps, etc are used a lot these days, but silicon carbide still works. Would these discs work in place of silicon carbide? The cabochon is probably about a 5.5 on the mho scale.....maybe a little lower.

                Answer This Question

A:  It is. I don't know specifics with regard to tested and measured grit hardness, but I do know that these outlast my silicon based sanding products to the point that I almost never use the silicon based except for finished work.

                by|May 4, 2023

A:  Our Diablo 220-grit will not give the same surface removal as a Silicon Carbide disc. Diablo's sanding discs are made up of an Aluminum Oxide blend, which will not give the same finish you are looking to achieve. With that being said, we recommend using a Silicon Carbide disc for this application.

                    One-time use sanding discs
These sanding discs work great.... or until you decide to remove the disc and the backing peels right off. They work great if you don't plan on switching the discs often and use the same grit size until the entire disc has to be replaced, but if you plan on switching the disc to a different grit size between sanding, then you'll be ripping off the backing each, even after trying to remove with care, it separates right off the disc.

Stripped several outdoor stained Cyprus columns. It was hooked up to a 16 gal wet dry vac and performed great. In total only used 4 pieces of paper. It held up well even sanding the tops of small nails. It leveled out the wood that bad been outside taking direct sun for just over a year. Fantastic durability and work per piece of paper.

These disks worked great. I am currently sanding saw marks on white oak. I have used my first disc for about an hour and it is still easily removing wood. You can see the burn marks in the picture and the sanded area next to it. Great value for the price.

The velcro on the back didn't stick to the sander. I had been using the same sander with a different brand of discs and it worked great.
