I have found that under certain circumstances when you first install the fitting it can leak. I have always used the Teflon thread tape which always works for me.

I love how digcorp says this is "quite unusual" - out of 29 reviews, 17 are one-star. This is a piece of garbage and I won't buy anything else from this company.

What is the material that this is made out of. It looks like plastic. You need to state that.

Garbage quality
I don't like to write negative reviews, but this item is garbage. It leaks after 6 months of use. I'm on my third one. It's inexpensive to replace but there is clearly something amiss with the manufacturing process which could be easily fixed with $0.10 more glue. Dear Corporate Buyer at Home Depot, find a new supplier for this part. Attached photo demonstrates the leak at front and rear of the item.

Do not buy.
I bought this in February 2020, but didn't install it until around April. It worked fine when I manually turned the water on to the drip system, but once I finally left the water on and the drip set to automatic, the thing started leaking after a few hours. Luckily I checked it before I wasted too much water. See picture. Unfortunately this is the only backflow preventer sold at HD. I'll need to find a more reliable one at a different store.

Leaked after half a summer.
Installed mid summer and It worked fine. Then it leaked like crazy the next spring.

Not a Fan
My first negative review ever but I believe this product deserves it. Plumbers tape and prayers wouldn't fix the leaks, spray and cannon like firing of the Preventer into the garden. I bought a similar product from a different manufacturer and it worked beautifully.

Leaks
After one season it started leaking as others have mentioned. Looks like a stress fracture between the bottom hose connector and body.
