Q:What is the difference between a coarse stone and a fine stone?
by|Mar 14, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  The amount of material that gets removed per pass.  Course will remove more material but not leave a smooth surface.  Fine will remove less material but leave a smooth surface which allows a sharper cutting edge

      Outstanding Sharpening Tool
These Dia-Sharp sharpeners are outstanding. Each weighs a couple pounds and they are completely dead flat for perfect sharpening. I use a lot of hand tools with my woodworking—planes, spokeshaves, chisels, and the like. I’ve been using oil stones like Arkansas and Norton stones for years. Those are effective, but they quickly develop pits, and take a decent amount of work to get a good edge. I’ve been hearing about DMT sharpeners for a while, and finally went ahead to see if they live up to the hype. They do. I acquired one each of the coarse, fine, and extra fine. These do an amazing job sharpening tools, quickly putting an edge on a dulled tool. They have a great “feel” to them as well—it’s pretty easy to tell just by the feel if a tool is sharpened. They only require a little bit of water to lubricate, and clean up quickly and easily with a shop towel. Though they are quite good and heavy, I find that putting a bit of shelf liner underneath is still necessary to keep it from sliding around on my workbench. I can’t recommend these highly enough if you have need to regularly sharpen any metal hand tools.

      Great sharpening stone.
My husband has always wanted one of these sharpening stones. When I gave it to him, he was like a kid at Christmas opening it. He couldn't wait to try it. He was amazed at how few strokes it took for him to sharpen his tools. These stones are guaranteed not to hollow or groove, they are great for both long and short knives and pointed tools. They have little rubber feet on the bottom to hold it in place when in use. You don't need to use oils on the stone....you can use them dry or with water. You can sharpen any steel, tungsten, ceramic, or other hard materials with these stones. You will not be disappointed with this product.

      Good 1st step in sharpening
This single-sided, coarse grit diamond stone sharpener is a good size for sharpening a variety of tools. Chisels, knives, and plane blades are a few of the uses. The coarse grit will clean up a badly damaged edge quickly. It is wide enough for most tools. Water sprayed on the diamond stone will aid in lubricating the stone and the tool. The swarf will show progress in removing metal and will wipe off with a rag or paper towel. Oil is NOT required or recommended on these stones. This stone will store away easily in a cabinet or drawer waiting for the next sharpening job. DMT also sells other stones with different levels of grit based on your needs. DMT diamond stones have a better surface than other brands - according to the package description. The metal stones will not warp or dish out like softer water stones. DMT also sells sharpening guide holders to get a consistent angle. I would recommend this stone as the 1st step in your sharpening process with finer grits up to the level of sharpness that your tool needs.

DMT 8 in. Dia-Sharp Bench Stone Coarse
Wow, No oil is needed to sharpen and you can sharpen dry or with water. This bench stone is huge & really has some heft to it. You will not have it moving around when you are putting an edge on anything. The Coarse diamond to transforms a dull edge effortless. You do not need to press hard to get this stone to cut. just a few swipes with a knife and you have an edge you can finish with a steel. This is the best quality diamond stone i have ever used. The way this is built it should last for years. Putting an edge on my lathe tools is very fast and easy. You really do get what you pay for with this Bench Stone.

This is a coarse stone that takes a dull knife to very sharp with just a few strokes. I use it to remove chips and re-profile some of my knife blades. With this order I also got some fine and extra fine stones that really put that final edge on all my knives.
