Q:Will this product eliminate the efflorescense problem permanently? We need to remove the efflorescence on a previously painted brick home so that we can prime & paint again but we wonder if the problem will still return and ruin the next paint job too?

        Answer This Question

A:  DVVAnnie - In some cases depending on the severity or amount of salt in the substrate, it may reoccur. It's important to remove the efflorescence from the surface before painting as it will affect adhesion. Applying DRYLOK® Protector with Saltlok® technology as a primer will help in reducing the reoccurrence. You can apply latex paints over the DRYLOK® Protector. https://www.homedepot.com/p/DRYLOK-Protector-1-gal-Clear-Low-Sheen-Penetrating-Sealer-with-SaltLok-Concrete-Sealer-29913/314743117

Quick , Easy and cost effective
Much more affordable than the premixed, why pay an eztra $20-$30 for water? Just mix with water, scrub in and rinse. Concrete feels like fine grit sandpaper. Wait 24 hrs to dry before applying clear bonding primer. Then topcoats.

Had a transmission leak on my driveway. The product said it would clean the spot. Did not phase it. Total waist of money. Would not recommend this to anyone.

Mel - The label does not state it will clean transmission fluid. We do not market this product as an oil, grease or transmission fluid cleaner. The label states to use a degreaser in those situations. DRYLOK® Etch is designed for etching masonry, stone, tile, and brick. It removes unsightly efflorescence (salt deposits) as well as excess mortar. We are sorry you did not understand the intended purpose of this product. wtuckerugl

This does the exact opposite. I used it to prep my block for applying Drylok and it brought even more salts to the surface, even in places that had none before. I followed all the directions to a T. I wire brushed the surface thoroughly, diluted this product properly, then rinsed well after. Now I am worse off than before. I wish I took before pictures, but the one attached was a section that has no noticeable efflorescence before treating. The other picture is a close up where you can almost see salt crystals formed on the surface. This product is almost salt-like in appearance which seems counter intuitive. I hope this saves someone else the time I wasted. Like all things these days, safer = less effective. Just use muriatic acid.

VTSean - This is a great example of not enough water used on the rinse step. If not fully rinsed with several water flushes, the acid will re-crystalize and look like efflorescence, exactly as you described.
We do offer a Liquid version that is much safer than muriatic acid. See our website for more information. wtuckerugl

            Not worth buying
I purchased this to remove efflorescence deposits from a block wall in my basement before painting. I had high hopes when I was applying the solution to the wall as it was bubbling when I was brushing it on. After a 30 minute wait after application (per directions) I gave it a good rinse with the garden hose. I was severely disappointed when the blocks began to dry. Not only did it not work, it made some spots look worse. Should you buy this product, do follow the safety guidelines and ensure proper ventilation. I had a fan blowing down from the top of the stairs and then another fan pointed at the open window. It seemed to work fine.

The etch was open and spilled in the box. How do I get credit for it? The paint was as expected though throwing a stir stick would have been a nice touch.

Sorry to see this - There are many reasons that could have caused your concern. Was the acid mixed one bottle to one gallon of water? Were the crystals fully dissolved in the mixing bucket? Did you allow the acid solution several minutes to work while scrubbing with a brush? Rinsing afterwards is very important - if any acid solution is not fully rinsed with clean water (multiple rinses) it may recrystallize and form the white powder you reported. Give us a call at 1-800-845-5227, we would like to help address your concern. Thank you. wtuckerugl

              Wrong directions
The directions on the bottle says to do an area of 4’ x 4’ and then wash it thoroughly before moving on to the next area implying that its crucial to be washed quickly. I knocked myself out for nearly 4 hours, it did not work. It still looks the same or worse than when I started. I found the full directions online and it said that it has to sit for 20-30 minutes before being washed. I’m extremely upset that the bottle gave misleading directions implying that it should be rinsed off right away.
