Q:Can I use Drylok over existing paint on interior basement walls?
by|May 21, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Harold - Thank you for your question. If the existing paint is not a waterproofer such as DRYLOK®, it will need to be completely removed down to bare masonry before applying DRYLOK® Waterproofer. Applying DRYLOK® over a non-waterproofer will void the warranty and may not be effective. If you have additional questions, we're here to help. 1-800-845-5227

Delivered as 1 gallon block of rubber
Received two 1 gallon pails, completely rubberized, as if the lid had been off for a year.

JayK - Sorry to read this. Could you please give us a call at 1-800-845-5227 unless you already contacted homedepot.com. It's very possible the carrier mis-handled the shipment causing the lid to pop and allow the paint to skin over. wtuckerugl

            Painting basement walls
I bought this to paint our basement walls. It looks great now. It changed the looks of my basement. I feel like it made the room feel bright and not like an old dungeon. It helped make it a dry place. Before we had some water seeping through a spot or two and now it's dry.

Robin, Sorry to see this review. Applying two coats is good, but applying at 100 square feet per gallon is required. Unfortunately, we have seen jobs where the product was applied at a much higher square footage rate that leads to failure. Check our coverage calculator at this link: https://www.drylok.com/drylok-coverage-area-calculator Would you please give us a call to discuss your project? You can reach us at 1-800-845-5227. We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns. wtuckerugl

                Excellent adhesion & appearance!
Currently renovating a 1970's home/garage that has been neglected. I chose gray for the garage footer blocks. I repaired the cracks/holes in the blocks with Quikrete hydraulic cement, trimmed the excess batt insulation between the sill board and blocks, then caulked the joint between the sill and blocks with Dynaflex 230. After all was dry, I gave it a heavy coat of Drylok Extreme on the wood sill plate, caulk, and blocks. Drylok adhered to all & looks great. Highly recommended!

                  Best paint
I only want to paint the basement cinder block walls ONE time - so I used the best paint I could find, Drylok Extreme. I now have bright white walls that reflect more than the little bit of lightbulb light in the dim basement. Tips: use a cheap stiff bristle brush and push the paint into all the holes and crevasses, the cinder blocks soak up a lot of paint so keep at it, paint on a second coat, put the paintbrush into a plastic baggie in between interruptions, use a slim fluffy roller to get behind the hot water tank as best you can, keep a fan blowing because it does get a bit smelly.

                    Works well
I first sealed all cracks and blocks with flexseal. That took 6 cans. I allowed that to cure for 48 hours. I then bought the 5 gallon drylok extreme and applied two coats to the whole garage and about 5-6 coats to the worst areas. I had a torrential downpour and the wall stayed bone dry. I’m not sure how it will perform over time, but I would be ok repainting it if needed. My garage is about 175 sq ft and I still have about 1/3 of the bucket left.

                      Horrible product
This is by far the worst stuff I have ever used. If they gave it to me for free I still wouldn't use it. This junk cost me about $700.00 more than it should because I have to redo everything. Sealed a brand new driveway. It leaves black tire marks directly into the sealer. I let it sit for 9 days, way beyond the recommended time. Parked a car on it for the first time today, I wanted to die. Absolutely the worst product on the market.

Did you read the instructions? Did you understand you used the wrong product? When you use the wrong product for a project, it's not a product issue. DRYLOK® Extreme is NOT FOR USE ON DRIVEWAYS. There is nothing on the label telling you how long to wait to park your vehicle on it because it's not for use on floors or a driveway...its for interior and exterior vertical surfaces only. This review should be removed as should the duplicate review on another item that was also used incorrectly used on a driveway. Please review the instructions and use the correct products for your project. wtuckerugl

I used about 3.5 gallons of this in my basement. Pay close attention to the square footage that a gallon covers, i didn't take it seriously thinking it was an overly conservative estimate. it is just about spot on. Make sure of this before your project starts so that you can evaluate whether a 5 gallon bucket would be a better option for you. With 2 coats needed you will likely need more than you think. I have not had a chance to see how effective it is- but if it working i wont get to the chance to ;)
