What are the implications of using, let's say, a 150 Lb spring for a 140 Lb door? I don't have a scale and am guessing the weight of my 8ft wide wooden door. I'd rather get a stronger spring for a lighter door than get a weaker spring for a heavier door.
Asked by: War
We recommend using a spring with a higher weight capacity for your door. If your door is 140 pounds, a 150 lb. Heavy Duty Extension Garage Door Spring should work fine. If your spring is 130 lbs. however, the 150 lbs. spring will be too strong for your door.

I noticed that the springs that were installed on my garage door was improperly sized. The door was just too hard/heavy to lift open. I installed these 140 lb springs and the problem was solved. Now the door opens much easier. Installation is simple BUT they are springs so extreme care must be made to ensure the work is done safely. The safety wire must be run through the spring so that should it break it will be less likely to cause serious damage. These springs seem to be well made and heavy duty as the name states. I have no problem recommending them to others.

I recently installed these new springs to replace a set of 10 year old springs. After a bad experience years ago, this is cheap insurance. We had a spring snap while the door was going down once. The safety cable did it's job but it's a very frightening experience nonetheless. As a result I replace them every 8-10 years. These springs were an easy replacement. Made well, good weight in hand, oiled to keep them from deteriorating while in storage. The color coding was easy to recognize so we knew we had the right ones. Most importantly, they do their job lifting our 1.5 car garage door with ease.

Anyone with a heavy old wood garage door knows that after a couple decades the poor springs start to weaken and become uneven, resulting in poor door closure. After selecting the correct length and spring diameter, these new springs fit the bill very well. Now the heavy old door closes completely flat on both sides, snug with the cement floor. Installation was quick and easy by raising the door, removing the old springs from their hooks on each end, and replacing with the new springs. Total install time took maybe, fifteen minutes for a new life on the door.
