Answer This Question

A:  I would say they are also sold in a set they just go in order of sizes.

A:  This is an old tradition from years gone by. My Dad's wrenches were like that and his nail sets were also. When they made a set, all the denominators were the same; cheaper that way. That way they didn't have to do a die reset each time for stamping.

A:  On the package it says that the sizes are 1/32, 2/32, and 3/32. I measure the smallest and largest slightly differently, but not enough to matter. See my review of these before you buy, though.

                GARBAGE
Started mushrooming on the first hit. Didn’t even last a small project, driving finish nails into quarter round for a small room, less than a hundred nails. This set is cheap, but it doesn’t even qualify as single-use. Spend more and get a hardened set.

They heat treated the wrong end. It rounded out on 5 bright finish nails and started damaging varnished wood. Not only did it damage the wood but by hardening the wrong side it becomes hazardous when struck with a hardened steel tool on hardened steel. I tossed my receipt so it had to go in the trash. Obviously the damage was more than the tool costs. Made in America reveals we not only don't make tools anymore but we've forgotten how. The level of stupid is reflected in the packaging which clearly points to the wrong side of the tool being heat treated.

                      Junk!
Used these to set finish nails and it buttoned the sets right out, cheap China metal. Junk!

These were purchased maybe one month ago to replace two that I had lost somewhere. I was doing a hardwood flooring repair, and needed to hand set some of the nails (40 to 50 nails). The smallest of these sets was appropriately sized, and the end appeared to have a good setting dimple. Before I had finished with even this small project, the end of the set had mushroomed, and since it was then rounded off, it was no longer useful as a set. I finished the project with the middle size, but that made larger holes in the wood than I wanted, but even that one was showing slight damage after less than a dozen nails (see photo, although I had a hard time getting the camera to focus that close). The unused largest set is on the right. Apparently these sets are not properly heat treated, because the last ones I had I had used for over 15 years (don't know the brand). Granted, with the most used ones the dimple was largely gone, but there was nothing like this distortion of the metal, which was obviously too soft for this function, and it wasn't as though these had years of use. As soon as I can find the receipt these will be returned. Home Depot had others available, and I may give them a try.

                          Shatters
After a few minutes use, the tip had shattered apart and rendered it pretty useless. I recommend spending more on something higher quality.
