Q:How long does an application of Ipe Oil last? I inherited a can from the previous owner, and I don't know when he applied the last coat. I am in Florida where is it very hot. Old can was kept in a shed. Is Ipe Oil available in one-half gallon?

A:  The product lasts maybe 6 months in direct sunlight and up to a couple of years when in the shade. I have never seen or found a 1/2 gallon size container for this product.

A:  I'm in Texas and reapply the Oil to my Ipe deck twice a year. It really depends on whether or not you wish to maintain a nice subtle brown finish or allow it to grey. The oil has some brown die (not stain) that enhances the appearance. Be sure to follow instructions. After it has had time to work you must wipe off the excess or it will be tacky. And yes - spontaneous combustion of oily rags is a possibility. Do not wad-up your oily rags and leave them sitting in the sun. At the very least - Soak them in water, then spread them out to dry. As to left over oil... If you can stir it it is still good.

A:  I used it on Cape Cod Massachusetts and applied one coat every 3 years. It was applied on Ipe wood decking! Was gorgeous! I stored mine in the basement so not sure about the hot temperatures for storing. You can google the product for all the info you need. I don’t think it it comes in smaller than one gallon. Home Depot is where I purchased mine by the gallon. Good luck!

A:  Hello. Ipe Oil is a wonderful product. It does not seem to be sold in a half gallon. You need add another coat when you normally would need another coat. In essence, look at your wood and see if it is still completely protected, if not, you need to put an additional coat on. We have our own half can kept in a shed and it has been used as needed to recoat the surface. We used it on a decorative pagoda, so not a lot is needed like a deck.....Hope this helps! The website for Ipe has tons of information. Good luck.

A:  We have used rags to wipe this stain on. This is a very thin product and must go on as thin as possible IPE wood will not soak this in as the wood itself is not porous. Applied as thin as possible it will dry to walk on in a day. Normal stain temps, such as 50-90 are fine.

            by|Apr 16, 2022

A:  This product was by far the best that I have used for my IPE deck. It has lasted for a few years and wears beautifully. I applied the stain after the pollen season was over and a few days of dry weather ahead. I used a thin pad paint/stain attachment via painter's pole for extra reach, when needed. Temps need to be in the 60's for it to dry really well.

              by|Apr 20, 2022

A:  over 60 degrees then apply with a roller/brush and wipe with a rag.

A:  Since it is an oil, we put it on our Ipe deck yearly. We have never gone longer, but less is needed every year. You could probably get away with touch up instead of a full application.

A:  I use Ipe Oil on a wall made of deck-size ipe planks that shield my pool equipment from view.  It’s in the sun all day, every day, in central NJ.  I find that I need to reapply ipe oil every other year at most.  I usually reapply annually because I like the deep red-brown color it brings out of the ipe.

A:  We have an ipe deck and we were disappointed with this product . It’s ok but not great . It lasted only about 12-14 months or less in mid South (NC). This year we applied Armstrong Clark ipe stain in mahogany tint and it looks beautiful. AC paints usually lasts us 2 solid years . I’d definitely recommend the AC .

A:  The answer really depends on a number of factors. The amount of daily sun exposure and the sun intensity are two of these. Parts of my southGeorgia porch has very intense sun exposure for 3/4 of the day. Those exposed areas tend to dry out and need yearly application of the oil. Areas not exposed to direct sunlight can go two years before a second application.  Also, the use of a good deck cleaner and whitener prior to the application is key to having a great looking and long lasting finish with this product. I have used it on my Ipe porch and love how it brings out the natural beauty of the wood.

A:  On my deck, which is cumaru (Brazilian teak), it only looks good for one season.

Shipping took a little longer than I expected (about 1 week), but it was not stocked locally in Northern Virginia, and due to its flammability I imagine it needs to be send via truck. In any event, the product is great. I have an ipe deck, and the installer used a different product which was heavier than this Ipe Oil. I left the deck go without another treatment for 3 years, which was probably too long. The former coating disintegrated over time, but left some residue in spots. I pre-treated the deck with a cleaner, and brightener. I also used an orbital sander with 100 grit pad to remove the portions of the residual deck coating material. It is unclear to me if the sanding step was necessary or not, but my impression is that a light sanding may yield the result I was looking for. The sanding didn't take as long as I thought. Maybe 1.5 or 2 hours. I have about 500'sq feet, and thought 1 gallon might be sufficient because Ipe wood doesn't absorb much oil. I was wrong. Two gallons was the right amount. I considered applying with a lambswool applicator, but I ultimately when with a brush made for applying deck stains. The brush was able to handle the top surface and the side surfaces at the same time, and so unlike with a lambswool pad, there was no need to separately apply additional stain to the cracks. On the other hand, while the brush was adequate at applying the stain to the top surface, I imagine the lambswool applicator may be superior that regard. I won't mind applying the same Ipe Oil product again next year because I really like how the the deck looks once it is finished. I am pleased with this product.

                            renewing my ipe
I used the two part cleaner then applied this oil. Wow what a differnce. My wood had never been treated before and the deck is 20 years old. I only bought two gallons for my sq footage and it was not enough. The wood soaked it up! Ordering two more gallons to finish up

I have used this product in the past and it continues to bring my ipe porch back to it's beautiful natural color. Very easy to work with but with the light viscosity one needs to be diligent about splatter on surrounding surfaces. It shows roller application but i use a 4" brush.

A nice finish but very definitely not clear. Strong brown color tint to it. See photo of half stained and half unstained. Believe that’s for UV protection but wish there was a clear product.

I purchased this product to seal a new Ipe deck I just had installed. the installer put down a first coat of some sort of seal but was spotty and uneven. I decided to go with this product based on name (good marketing idea) and that it was oil base product. I used a finer "smooth" 6 inch roller to put the sealer down and then let is set for 15-25 min and down on my hands and knees to wipe up excess and smooth out the areas with a rag. it looked good maintained the tone/color of the Ipe wood and appears to have penetrated the wood well. the end results was a even coat of sealer and dried overnight. FYI for me I only used 1/2 gallon (approx) to coat 330 sq ft of floor/decking. I am not why I got such good coverage where the can states covers 250-300 sq ft for the entire gallon . perhaps because it was previously sealed or new Ipe wood. It has been a few weeks now and we have received lots of rain and the water still beads up and it looks good . We shall see how it lats through the summer into fall. I recommend this product it is worth the extra $$......

I have applied this product annually on my cumaru (brazilian teak) deck annually for 3 years. Roll on, wipe off excess and allow a few hours to dry-- its a half day project that brings out the beautiful honey, red and brown hues of the wood. Definitely worth the cost and effort imo. Unfortunately, Colorado sun bakes out most of the color in under a year, but I attribute this to the extreme density of the lumber, which prevents anything from penetrating deeply. Very happy that Home Depot is carrying this product. Previously I had to order online, and with shipping the cost was notably more.
