Q:Do I need to pre drill holes to use these or are they self drilling? Also will I need to use a countersink to get them to lay flat? Home Depot told us yes to both even though these appear to be self driving screws...

Q:What type of metal are these made from? I'm trying to decide if I can use these or if I need to buy stainless steel screws to guarantee they won't corrode long term / be unhealthy for a tree I drive them into.

    Answer This Question

A:  These are steel screws with a polymer coating meant for long term outdoor use. Recommendations cannot be made for use on a tree as that is outside of published uses.

4 out of 10 SNAPPED! Terrible quality screws...
Used these on a brand new deck. After a few months I noticed boards lifting up so I figured it was the deck boards drying out. I went to tighten the screws down they just spun. To my surprise the screws had SNAPPED, all in different locations along the screw. It's been months since I finished the deck and more boards lifted up so I (stupidly) used a new box of these same screws and, low and behold, those screws are now snapping at random too. No one has walked on the deck but me. DANGEROUS!

      Brovo Deckmate
These torque head Decking screws make secure sturdy construction and nearly no failure as to continually stripping driver bits , and it makes it easier to remove. Highly recommended.

      Quality has gone way down!
I recently bought a 5 pound box of 2 1/2 inch screws and 20 of them either didn't have the heads drilled out, some had partially drilled out heads that wouldn't accept a bit, and some of them were deformed wabbled a lot when screwing them in. I was using them to build raised beds, but I'm about to start a deck project and am no longer going to use these screws for that. Buyer beware. There is also no customer service for this product and I didn't keep every single screw so doubt HD cares!

        Don't use those!!
Rebuilt the deck last year, and used those Deckmate screws. There was one bad deck board, so I decided to pull it to replace. Found that some screws were broken, all at the same spot. So I got curious and went around to check the others. More than half of the screws are broken at the same spot, 9 months after the installation. Now I'm going around pulling them all (as best I can) and replacing them with stainless steel screws. Don't use the Deckmate. Please spread the words to spare others from the trouble. We properly prepped the deck boards, and pre-drilled them as well. This is potentially really dangerous, and absolutely unacceptable.

Screws are breaking after less than two months
Over the course of the two months, I've purchased four separate boxes of Deckmate star drive coated screws to use in securing deckboards while remodeling my back deck: (2) 1 lb boxes of 2 1/2" (item #: 1003 274 848) (1) 5 lb box of 2 1/2" (1003 274 835) (1) 1 lb box of 3 1/2" (1003 274 833) I've since stained my deck and thought I was finished with the project when I began to notice some of the screws slightly "popping" loose. While attempting to re-secure them with a drill, I determined that several of the screws had essentially begun to break. So far I've discovered at least ten of them (photo of several below, along with an "unbroken" one for reference) that have broken, all in a similar spot on the screw. I really liked these screws when installing and their promise of "lifetime warranty" but am now greatly concerned over what the future holds regarding their durability.

These decimate screws are my favorite. Reasonable price, the star drive bit never slips or strips out and they hold tight. Great for exterior applications but work well for all kinds of applications.
