We have a sensor and our home is hardwired to 6 outdoor lights. When lights don't turn on or off if we tap the sensor, then it works. Dirty or needs to be replaced?
Asked by: Unky
Had one of my lights reflecting off of a white gutter and causing the same problem. I turned the lights away from the gutter and everything was fine after that. If turning the lights in another direction is not feasible then the fixture would need to be turned so the photo cell is not picking up that reflection.

Lights won't stay on

I recently purchased and hooked up the mini button on two outdoor lights, both that are on the same circuit. The lights Will not stay in for more than 30 seconds and shut off. Why is this?
Asked by: NewToThis
I had the same thing happen. Turns out that when the lights come on, the light would shine on the photo-cell and turn it off. I shielded the photo-cell with a short piece of plastic tubing and that fixed the problem.

Do you have to drill a hole in the light fixture backing for the photo cell to show through? Also, does the bigger body portion of the photo cell have to be stuffed somewhere into the junction box behind the light? Doesn't seem like there is enough room, especially with the cross bar piece where the light mounts to.
Asked by: Mikey
Yes, unless there already is one. If so, not a big deal but be sure it's where it can catch the light.

Is this unit temperature sensitive. Mine works fine in the garage but when installed outside in the cold, it turns off after about 5 minutes. Light works fine when photo cell is by-passed. On looking at this picture, the unit appears to have 4-wires - two white, one red, and one black. It also appears to have a slanted body, which those stocked at Home Depot has three wires and does not have a slanted body.
Asked by: Bill
It only has three wires and yes there is a slant on one side. The difficult part is the three wires are mounted on the side of it which means you need more than 3/4" depth mounting space to point it away from the lantern.

This unit is slightly smaller than previous unit. Easy, simple installation. I would rate higher but waiting for it to go through a cold season.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect For Coach Lights I have a pair of coach lights on each side of my garage door. My wife likes to have them on at night for security and to highlight our address in case of emergency. Too often, we either forgot to turn them on at sundown or, more frequently, to turn them off in the morning. This small sensor is the perfect, no maintenance solution. Installation is simple and now we simply leave the switch on, knowing the sensor will handle the chore no matter when the sun rises or sets. BTW, by "simple" install I mean a half hour or so. In my case it involved removing one light (usually the one closest to the switch) fiddling with placement options for the sensor (I have a very shallow box behind the fixture), determine where to drill a hole in the lamp base for the sensor, then reassembling with the sensor wired in line with the original wiring per the simple instructions on the packaging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good product with wrong informationsand bad instructions This is a very good photocell sensor, with wrong information and bad instructions. The WRITTEN installation instructions on the carton is not complete. It does not say where the RED wire should be connected. But the picture illustration is correct. The Product Overview on the Home Depot site says it is Heavy duty 500-Watt UL rating, 15-Amp, 120 VAC, which not very correct. 500 watts is 4.2 Amps not 15 amps. The silkscreen info on the product housing is correct, which says 4.2 amps. Overall, the product is good. Carton information should be corrected and re-made. Home Depot Product Overview should be corrected.

Very disappointed, installed two of them and they are cycling every 20 to 20 seconds. And yes, the are mounted way above the bulb. I live in the sunshine State and even if a small could passes the sun you still can't look at the sun. Minimal shade is provided. Pain in the butt , now I have to dis-assemble and take back. I see in the forum the manufacturer apparently doesn't care as they don't comment on any of the reviews.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK but be careful installing I used this on a exterior fixture in our covered entryway. The small size let me mount it in a nice spot and it just fit and allowed the fixture to fit nicely against the wall, but it was sticking out as far as it can. It didn't work and I figured it was the covered entryway until I read the review by "Just OK." Sure enough when I took it out, I noticed the white wire had pulled out which caused the photocell to retract into the housing. I purchased another one and took a small zip tie and secured the wires together about an inch from the body of the body of the unit. I remounted it and it is working perfectly, even in the covered entryway. Secure the wires so they cannot pull out and be carefully mounting the unit so the wires won't get pulled.
