AnswerThe shelves are real wood and about 1 inch thick. As long as brackets are mounted to studs, shelves can bear a good amount of weight.

Overall I am happy with the shelves and how they look. They do have a strong smell that I hope will fade soon. Hanging them took more time and effort than I expected. Not a lot of detail in the instructions so I had to figure a lot out on my own and the screws included broke while installing and I had to use some of my own. But like I said overall I am happy with them, they are just as pictured and I am excited to put more stuff on them.

The shelves are different lengths and depths. Made from less than construction grade 2x6. Depth of shelves veries upbton1/4” length are different up to 1/4” and mounting holes in the back of the shelves are different widths apart as well as not centered on the self. No way to have all shelves align or even be in thw same level plane

First observation was the very strong stain/grease smell that has yet to dissipate and the second is the poor instructions (literally 2 steps and several useless photos). I made the mistake of not realizing that the shelves floated and the brackets had a specific width placement (not in the directions). So my shelves are currently sitting on top of the support bars (not the worst look). I'm hoping I can drill new holes in the back so I don't have to repair and paint the wall. I love how it looks though, as other reviewers said, the "dark walnut" is not dark at all.

The craftsmanship and quality control on these shelves were poor. I ordered the "dark walnut", and:
- The shelves are not all the same color (way outside what I would consider "reasonable" variance for a "natural" finish)
- The holes drilled on the back of the shelves for mounting are obviously not level
I definitely wouldn't recommend these shelves.

I ordered this shelf when it was on sale. I was nervous after reading some of the reviews, but after a long shipping delay, the product finally arrived and it was exactly as pictured. The bad: One of the pre-drilled holes had been stained over and the rough wood from the drill hole was covering the hole, but I easily cleared it away. I unscrewed the towel bar and reconnected b/c one of the sides of the bottom shelf had a deep knot/chunk in it. After flipping, it was perfect. The good: I measured and installed the metal brackets myself with the drywall screws included with zero problem. It came w/ a small instruction sheet which basically said to hang the metal brackets first and then slide the wood shelves onto the metal posts. Probably would have been helpful to have someone help, at least to hold the level when measuring the first drill hole into your wall, but not necessary. Can't wait to finish decorating.

It came with no instructions, but a home depot employee taught me how to use wall anchors. You’ll want to line up the metal brackets where you want them and ensure they are level. Then pencil in where to screw in the wall anchors (you do not need a power drill, just a screwdriver). Screw in the wall anchors by themselves, not over the metal bracket. then line up the metal bracket and screw the metal screws through the holes. This will allow the wall anchor to open and secure itself. Then slide the shelves on. Looks nice, sturdy. Posted photos as a guide with instructions

There were no instructions to start with. One of the predrilled holes was about 1/4 inch off its mark causing us to have to redrill it. Two other predrilled holes were not big enough and when we tried to pound the shelf into place, our wall crumbled. Also the metal strips bent, causing the shelf to not set upon the wall evenly.
Ended up throwing the whole thing away and now need to pay a contractor to patch and paint the wall. Very sad.
