Questions & Answers

Drain

What size drain do I need to buy?
Asked by: Louise
We just bought some cheap drain kit, and then bought another bit of PVC pipe. Installed ourselves in one day. This tub is deep. A standard tub drain will not be long enough.

Can you tile over the front flange? I looked at the tub in store and the front flange looks really thick...

... like it’s not meant to be covered with tile.
Asked by: Texas
Yes. For a proper installation you would need to inset the tub far enough (considering the position you want the tub in and the wall studs) to accommodate the moisture resistance backboard plus the tile. It all can fit.

Just unboxed this tub. Haven’t installed. Seems very flimsy at first touch. Does anyone else feel this way? I’m not about to install a tub that flexes

Asked by: Mindreeder
YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT FIRST TOUCH, BUT IT FIRMS UP WHEN INSTALLED. SEE MY PRIOR POST ABOUT ADDING ADDITONAL SUPPORT AND INSULATION.

Does this tub require a mortar base?

Asked by: Mush
No. The tub base has its own grid style reinforcement.

It's fairly light but not a light-weight. It feels solid, the flange is thick. It sits well on the floor. It's a deep soaker, the finish was spotless, and was packed well. Overall - excellent. Really like it. Regarding the tub drain kit, they do sell a cable drain system for these 18" tall tubs. I hear they get poor reviews and they are expensive. Instead, buy the standard *easy-touch* drain kit that works on 12" to 15" tubs and also buy a 6" extension tube. (You may have to cut an inch off the over-flow tube to make it fit.) Again, use the easy-touch and not the flip-lever. The flip-lever will not have enough linkage and flip-levers are a pain.

Front apron bracket does not secure securely to apron instructions says to glue it. Apron is flimsy and moves causing grout/caulk to fail. Also front apron has a profile on the bottom that ends about an inch from the wall but is cut on a 45 degree angle. The bath I remodeled called for wood base moundings that needed to be cut at a 45 to be flush with the apron causing an awkward transition. I also used the wall kit on this job. The wall kit does not engage into the tub on the bottom but relies on glue and caulk to hold it in place. I have installed other tubes that had much More rigid aprons and better wall interlocking systems. Good luck

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly designed drain Bought this tub, installed drain apparatus and seemed to be sealed fine prior to installing. Now that it's installed (and the entire bathroom is renovated, and so replacement would be prohibitively expensive and difficult) I've had continuous problems with leaks from the drain. After reseating and re-doing the drain using the recommended acrylic caulk, the leak continued. Today, I finally realized why--the black plastic support base is cut even with the white tub at the drain; when a drain pipe is installed with a rubber gasket between the drain pipe and the tub, it's actually between the black support and drain pipe. However, the black support and the white tub are NOT sealed, and water leaks from between the base and the tub, even though the rubber gasket and support base are sealed. It's a serious design flaw which is now causing us huge headaches. I've attempted to use massive amounts of plumbers putty to hopefully seal where the base meets the tub, which seems to be working but apparently will void my warranty... There's no way you could seal this up with caulk. Again, poor design and I can't believe more people aren't having problems with this. The black support should really be cut away from the drain, so you can make a good seal. Too late for us to try that though, since the tub is already in and the surround already tiled...

Per the review you definitely need a extra piece for the drain because it's a deeper tub and some rigging on tub drain linkage assembly. The first one was damaged. I did the order pay on line and went to pick it up so it was at the front desk waiting on me. When I went to check it as it was the last one in stock the sales person said she did when she taped the box up. I didn't open it for days because I was in the middle of demo but when I did it was damaged in a the corner. I took it back to Home Depot they didn't give me any problems and I checked the new one out top to bottom. It's nice and deep like I wanted and cleaned well with some dish detergent..Jay58

Deeper than normal so the kids splash just a little bit less. Went in easy, and my installer sprayed expandable foam all around the base when it went in and it's solid as a rock. Very happy with the purchase.

When we noticed a hole in the bottom of our old steel tub, my husband and I decided that it might need replacing. Neither of us had any experience in tub replacement but manage to install this tub with no issues. The tub was light weight and easily handled by the two of us. The one thing I do recommend is looking at the specification page available online but wasn't included in the box with our tub. It has the exact dimensions of the drain and will save you from having to lift the tub in and out 6-7 times trying to cut the drain to size.

Bought this tub to replace the cast iron one that we had to remove due to a subfloor issue. Light weight and easy to move into the SUV and house. Slightly difficult to get the drain on, have to be really precise with the installation, but after a few tries it's all set. Had to buy an extra 1" piece of pvc since available drain kits are not long/tall enough. Install went easily. Tub is DEEP. We have had it installed for about 2 weeks now. No leaks from anywhere. We couldnt use the recommended tub surround because I wanted to keep the vintage feeling of the bathroom. But bought the recommended DAP caulking and have had no issues.
