The backing plate attaches to the baseboard with a single supplied screw.
I attached it to the baseboard without using a drill, just a screwdriver. I'm guessing if you need to attach it to your door, it should work too (as long as your door isn't metal plated).
You can attached the spring door stop to the baseboard trim (near the floor) behind the door, which is generally a good location. The rubber bumper should make contact with the door. When you open the packaging, the metal piece at the bottom of the spring twists off the spring, and that is where you will find the screw to attach it. Remove the screw and place it the hole of the mounting piece making sure that the hollow side is to the wall. Do not over tighten screw because you will be winding the spring into the small hole on the mounting piece.

I have only been able to purchase them individually; although, some times you can get "contractor" discounts if you purchase large quantities, such as 10 or more springs.
