will it work on a slab 4 or 5 inches thick I have an old cistern its not connected to the house want to bust the top then fill it in
Asked by: joe
The smallest slab I tested it on was 3 inches thick. It worked fine on that. I drilled holes that were 2-1/2" deep. It worked with either 3/4" diameter holes, or with 1" holes. The larger diameter the hole, the faster it works. Expect good results in less than 2 days with 1" holes, and maybe 3-4 days with 3/4" holes. It would certainly work in a 5" slab. I'd drill 1" diameter holes, maybe 4" deep for that one. But get a good drill. Maybe get the Dewalt SDS drill that has anti-vibration shock absorbers built-in.

What is smallest hole it can be used in?

Asked by: Randy
The smallest diameter I tested was 3/4 inch. These were drilled 2-1/2 inches deep into a 3 inch thick concrete slab. It took 3 to 4 days to fully develop large cracks. That's probably because I used more water and made a thinner mix with the Dexpan. I had to do that to get it to pour into the 3/4" diameter holes. I couldn't trowel a thicker mix into such small holes.

Will the damage house structure if the concrete step is right up against the house?

Asked by: Vero
If the concrete step was poured so that it's melded with the stucco on the house, I wouldn't risk it. The cracks formed in the step could crack the stucco.

Will it work on a 5x5 foot boulder? Had a tree uproot a huge bolder-blocks path to lake! Will this work to remove it?
Asked by: Beth
Possibly, but you will have to drill holes into the bolder, this will require a large rotatory hammer and a lot of work. Mike

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 6 ft x 3 ft x 6 in concrete wall... 6 ft x 3 ft x 6 in concrete wall (with 3 upright pieces of rebar in it) to demolish: Many 3/4" holes drilled diagonally down in the bottom 8" of the wall, left overnight. In the morning a jagged crack had formed connecting all of the holes. A 22 yo man & a 6 lb sledge; wall down in 30 min.

Finally a friend mentioned Dexpan would probably work for me. So I Googled Dexpan and it looked like it would do the job I needed. I ordered an 11 lb.container of it and it only took hours instead of days and weeks to get the concrete steps demolished and removed. I an HIGHLY recommending Dexpan for anyone that needs concrete or rock broken up to move it out. GREAT product and THANKS to Home Depot for caring such a GREAT Product. Tuffy H

After starting the removal I found out the steps had been poured 2 to 4 feet deep. A borrowed jack hammer did not do the job, and after a day of work I looked for a solution. I found Dexpan. I could only drill 1" holes but it did the job easily. It did take more than 24 hours. I did need to do the bottom steps a second time because I did not drill a correct pattern for the crack to form. The second try worked great. This is a lot easier than a jack hammer or a sledge.

I was not able to drill the holes myself, but I got someone to do that for me, which was the hardest part. It was not able to break the stairs up completely, but that was because the holes were not as deep as they should have been and I ran out of product. However, I was very pleased with how well the stuff expanded causing a lot of weak areas. After it was finished expanding, I took a sledge hammer to the rest. It took me two days (I am a woman with only medium to low upper arm strength and little experience with a sledge) to break the stairs into chunks small enough to haul out. Without this product, that staircase would still be standing! I was very pleased. I would have purchased more if I knew it would work that well.

We used this product to break up deep large footings so we could install new bollards. The footings were around 20 inch in diameter by 30 inch deep. We drilled holes 20 inch deep and filled with Dexpan. The Dexpan expands and cracks the concrete allowing us to remove the chunks, it is still work but just trying to break up with our the Demolition product would have been gruesome to say the least

I had a large (5 foot by 3 foot) granite rock sticking up in the yard next to the house. It was blocking drainage and I wanted to remove the top 10 inches of it. I followed directions and about 2 days later the top 10 inches were broken up so that I could simply pick up the pieces and haul them away. Perfect!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Success demolishing stubborn granite Had some really stubborn granite sticking up in an otherwise100% flat granite area, about 4' in diameter that a D12 couldn't even budge. Drilled some 7/8" holes & poured in slurry. Came back a few days later - one of the rocks was demolished. The other rock was 1/2 way demolished, needed one more go. It does what it says it does!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Perfectly When cutting a building pad on a hillside we came across a large (VW Bug) sized Boulder. I drilled (6) 18" deep holes in a "T" pattern on the top of the rock and filled them with dexpan. When I returned two days later the big rock had turned into quite a few little rocks that were easily removed by the equipment we had onsite.
