About This Product

The SOMMER garage door opener is made in Germany and is the only opener of its kind offering Europe's leading innovative technology. Unlike other garage door openers that use a noisy chain, belt or screw the Direct Drive Technology has only one moving part. The motor sprocket glides silently along a fixed chain, embedded in a sturdy steel rail, making it the quietest garage door opener available. The spring-loaded chain will never sag down and the advanced internal object detection system and the safety sensors constantly monitor every door movement ensuring the highest level of safety. The 24-Volt DC motor travels with the garage door which provides maximum lifting force and minimizes wear and tear. The Direct Drive Technology enables the SOMMER opener to be powerful, reliable and safe.

Q:i have had my door opener for 5 years, no problem except getting someone to install it. Now, though, it has been acting up. Noise but not lifting the door. I unplugged and re-plugged, then the lights flashed on and off, could not stop this without unplugging. Is this the sign of this unit having failed? Has been extremely cold this past week, but this had happened several months ago and the unplugging solved it. Thanks.

A:  The only trouble I’ve had with my garage door opener is the key pad sometimes it doesn’t work but over all I have not experienced any other problems with the garage door opener. A few years ago I helped my son install his and he has not had any problems with his at all. I would contact the manufacturer to see if they can help. Utube is another option sometimes you can fine answers there.

A:  Hopefully you fix it by now, but in case someone else is looking for an answer, here it is, the issue with with contacts between the housing assembly and the rail. its a sliding connection and because of friction over time it gets corroded and stops making a good contact. I had the same issue and contacted the manufacturer, the referred me to utube where a guy explains the issue and how to fix it. I fixed it and now its been working fine for a month! Here is the utube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wiw8tC-381E Hope this helps someone!

A:  First, the Gogogate is crap, you should put it in the garbage. But if you really want to try it, you can install it near the wall station, or near the opener head. It has 2 wires that attach that send a signal to open/close. It requires power, so you must have a receptacle nearby. That is why I put it near the opener head. The Gogogate came in a little white box inside the Opener package. It came with absolutely no instructions on what to do with it. I had to research via google. I understand that the only difference with the models that Home Depot sells are that one version has a sticker that says it includes the Gogogate.

I have two 8' x 9' garage doors that used Sears openers (made by Chamberlain, I think) for a couple of decades. Those openers had composite couplings and sleeves that wore out over time and were a pain to replace. They had two screw adjustments for force and two screw adjustments for open and close distances that did not want to hold their settings. This new unit does away with those frustrating adjustments. There are two stops that you set in the track to determine how high and low the door will open. The unit teaches itself the amount of open and close force that is needed. No more finicky fiddling with four screws to get the settings right. As near as I can tell there is only one moving part - a gear that is made out of metal, so parts replacement should be a thing of the past. The new unit is much quieter than the one I replaced, and there is less bouncing of the door rails. The doors are side by side, so I was able to compare the opening and closing speeds, and the new unit is about four seconds slower, an insignificant difference as far as I'm concerned. As soon as one of the parts breaks in my other old unit I intend to replace it with another Direct Drive. The unit has been operating a few weeks now without problems. Notice this photo shows our unit mounted to a concrete roof that is 10' above the floor. The garage door is 8" high and all the necessary hardware was included for a door of that height - no extension was required.

While it was not hard for me as a female to assist in putting this together, and I had help from a male who had installed his own previously, it was a tad confusing as some of the parts had changed and we would have been on hold if I hadn't gotten someone on the phone to ask a question, (after the hours that they say they are available). It is quiet, which I couldn't imagine that it would be as quiet as it is because the door had been opened manually for a few years and seemed so loud each time it was raised or lowered. It's cold outside now and having this for about a month now, I am so glad to once again be able to push a button and drive into my garage.

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: I am impressed, it's rock solid, and whisper quiet. 100% SATISFIED. BACKGROUND: • I am a Do-It-Yourselfer with no training. I YouTube everything and have a white collar job, so I am not even used to tools. • I have a single car garage door made of wood and weighting about 250 pounds. • It took me three weeknights after dinner to install this, with no extra tools or trips to Home Depot. A second person would have helped, but is not necessary. If it were a weekend it would have been one day, including removing the old unit. • Removing the old unit is the hardest part (from a safety standpoint - the old rail fell on my head!) If it is a new installation, it is no harder than any other new opener. • I have a couple hundred cycles on the unit so far after installing it two weeks ago. The GOOD: • This thing is whisper quiet. Seriously, you have no idea how quiet. I also took the opportunity to replace all springs, cables, pulleys, and rollers with good quality as well, and you can not hear it from inside the house or a few feet away in the driveway. In the confines of the garage it is audible, but you don't need to raise your voice to continue a conversation. • Complete directions are easy to follow (beware the quick start guide!) • It worked perfectly the first time I plugged it in and tried it, from the wall switch, my cell phone, and from the remotes. • Range of the factory remotes is pretty good. No need to get super close and stop if you are using those. The BAD: • It leads you to believe you can control your door from anywhere - that requires purchase and installation of a sold-separately camera and a subscription (if you read closely on the description I think it mentions it in the fine print). • If you don't have the subscription, etc., the smartphone app only works when you are connected to your home WIFI, so range is VERY limited. • Installation is not simple, but not difficult either, just tedious, even though it only requires simple tools. • Not one single bracket, fitting, or connector is reusable as it would be if you upgraded to a new model of your existing unit. You will replace a lot of stuff, leading (in my case) to some minor cosmetic work. The UGLY: • The "quick start" instructions are 100% useless, unless you have the full instructions memorized, which would remove all need for a quick start guide. • The whole thing feels very plasticky, despite actually being pretty good quality.

I couldn't install it becaue the description on your website was incorrect. It said it had an 11' rail and when I receive it, it only has an 8'. So I must return it.

                  Avoid it like the 'Rona!!!
My 6 year-old Sommer Direct Drive is going in the trash tomorrow. Check the youtube videos - the contact points fail, and it simply stops working. It was smooth originally (when it worked), but it's very poorly designed. Sommer supposedly has a "fix" - they sent the kit and I spent an hour+ installing the "fix" and it still doesn't work. For nearly $300, a garage door opener should last, and should not require the level of maintenance that this thing does.

                    Superb Product
I have this product installed for one of my garage doors and it is an excellent product...It operates very smoothly and quietly...It is much better from the type of openers where the belt moves...Also since the movement is much smooth, the object detection lights affixed at the bottom of rails wont go out of alignment like the other products...

                      Absolutely perfect garage door opener!
I've had this Sommer direct drive garage door opener for nearly 10 years and it has worked perfectly. It is extremely quiet and maintenance free. Will buy another for my two other garage door openers as soon as they fail.
