24-Volt Wet Switch Flood Detector

$ 48 02

Overview

The Wet Switch is a solid state device designed to detect the presence of condensate water overflow. The Wet Switch is placed into the secondary drain pan — a normally dry pan. If the primary drain pan fails, condensate water will overflow into the secondary drain pan. Upon sensing moisture, the Wet Switch will turn the system off (typically the cause of the condensing water) to help prevent damage to carpets, walls, woodwork, ceilings, and other property.

Questions & Answers

can you hook this up to have a lamp turn on when water is sensed?

Asked by: Charlie
Yes; but, as Nathan says, not an ordinary household plug-in lamp (unless you add a relay). If you can find a 24 VAC lamp (or two 12 V lamps in series), you can connect it to the normally-open terminals (the white and green wires, according to the picture) for a remote indicator. There is also a red LED to indicate the alarm situation on the body of the unit.

I need a device that, when it detects water (the beginning of a flooding condition), it will break a 240 volt circuit that goes to a whole house humidifier to prevent it from flooding the room by its discharge. Will this do it?
Asked by: HandymanJoe
Not directly. This device interrupts a 24V circuit, like that on a thermostat. If your humidifier is controlled by an energized 24V wire (IE a wire on your thermostat), then the switch could interrupt the control wire, but not the power source.

How long is the cable that comes with the wetswitch & what type of plug does it come with?
Asked by: Tim
The 6 foot cable simply has stripped ends that are commonly connected with wire nuts. Of course you could crimp or solder the ends as you like.

I want to create a system that when water is detected it turns on a Little Giant pump Such as the this one http://www.homedepot.com/p/Little-Giant-1-A-1-200-HP-Submersible-Only-Recirculating-Pump-500203/205071643 Can this be done? Any thoughts
Asked by: painfulldoityourselfer
It probably could, but this switch isn't really meant for that. Three issues: 1) This wet switch is designed to trip occasionally, not constantly, so it may fail more quickly than you would like. 2) It's designed to be placed inline with 24V(ish) thermostat/control voltage for HVAC. So any heaver loads would need other switching gear that is controlled by this switch. 3) the wet switch trips with rahter small amounts of water - perhaps too small for your pump, leading the pump to burn out from running dry... I think it would all be one giant work around. I recommend simply buying a submersible pump that has the switch built in (they are common).
