Questions & Answers

I want to clean grout out of cracks and crevises on tumbled stone tile without damaging the tile what would be my best bit to use?

I installed tumbled stone tiles which look great but the grout is noticeable in the texture of the stone, tried using a fine nylon brush, not doing the trick. I want to clean it without altering the color or texture of the tile.
Asked by: Randy
Cleaning individual grout lines is a tedious slow process no matter what tool or bits you choose. Once the grout has hardened, it is practically as hard as stone. That's why pros always try to clean the grout BEFORE it sets. But everyone who ever did any grout work has had this experience so don't feel bad! In my experience, if you must clean hardened grout, the only practical method is to use a abrasive buffing pad powered by a corded drill. Cordless drills are OK for small jobs, but quickly get hot when running constantly. A corded drill provides more power and doesn't run down. These abrasive pads are available at Home Depot and come in several grits. I have had the best results from the maroon or green colored pads. They're inexpensive so you can try more than one to find the best grit for your needs. Home Depot also sells the new ReciproTool with the green scouring pad. ReciproTool also makes a stainless steel brush attachment for more stubborn grout. Just search the HomeDepot website for ReciproTool. You'll find them! The advantage of that system is it moves in line with the grout lines so it is less likely to mess up the tile. Of course you need a reciprocating saw to power it. Good Luck!

is this tool able to drill in glass

Asked by: bette
Yes, but drilling glass is a sketchy process for any handheld tool. You need a diamond abrasive bit, some putty to make a water dam around the hole, and plenty of water to keep temperature down. If you haven't tried this before, I suggest you watch some youtube videos on the subject before working on a valuable project. Making holes in glass is fraught with danger: danger of breaking the glass, danger from flying glass chips and possible electrocution hazards from using an electric tool near splashing water. At minimum, you'll want full wrap-around safety glasses and long rubber gloves. You also must use a fresh diamond bit and the right speed. Too fast, and the bit can grab the hole and shatter the glass. Too slow, and it makes a tedious job take even longer. Drilling glass requires patience and caution, but it can be done. I've only drilled glass a few times but now have found the only method I'll use is a diamond bit in a drill press. I clamp everything securely so it does not move, but gently to avoid breaking the glass ( or mirror) Then after building a small water dam (with plumber's putty) around the accurately marked position. I add cold water and use a VERY gentle slow touch. You must repeatedly remove the bit and re-enter gently. It takes some practice to judge the optimum speed. It is also helpful to back the glass with a nice flat sheet of plywood. That prevents the bit from suddenly diving through the hole at the last second when unfortunate accidents tend to happen. The slightest amount of over-pressure creates tiny fractures in glass, some of which are invisible to the naked eye. Trust me, when that bit goes through the last 1/10th millimeter, it can shatter the glass so fast you won't even see it happening. SO, adequate gentle clamps with rubber pads are highly recommended! You don't want a sheet of glass falling on the floor. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. I hope that helps. Check out some videos first and PLEASE be careful! Good luck!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and Compact When changing the thermostat on my '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I broke off one of the bolt heads. After failing to remove the frozen bolt with other drilling solutions, I took the advice of an auto parts dealer and purchased a Dremel and a hard rotary file bit. The slim profile and variable power of the Dremel allowed me to access the bolt and drill the hole needed to successfully remove the bolt. I'm looking forward to using this tool for many other diverse projects. I purchased the corded model to make sure I wouldn't run into any issues with fading battery power. I'm really happy with this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from wonderful tool when it works I bought this dremel a month ago for work. This was a replacement for a dremel (same model) that I had got almost 2 years ago. I really like this tool and use it everyday. I am a dog groomer and use it to file the dogs nails. When the first dremel stopped working I figured I would send it in to be fixed to use on my personal dogs and I would purchase a new one for work. I used the new dremel for LESS than a month and it stopped working Christmas Eve Eve, the busiest time of the year for groomers! I needed a working one now so I returned the stupid thing back to where I purchased it and they replaced it. There is obviously an issue with the switch to turn it on because that is what stopped working on both dremels. Hopefully this dremel will work long enough for me to find another tool.
