Dustopper

High Efficiency Dust Separator, 12 in. Dia with 2.5 in. Hose, 36 in. Long

$ 39 97

Overview

Owning a Dustopper means never having to worry about cleaning the inside of your wet/dry vacuum, or its nasty filter. Dustoppers new, low-profile design puts a whole new spin on cyclonic dust separation and offers a faster, better, easier way to manage the dust and debris. For decades, most wet/dry vacuums have been based on a design where a pleated air filter is positioned inside the same bucket used to haul away collected dirt and debris. While much of what is drawn into the wet/dry vacuum is collected by its bucket, finer particles of dust will become lodged in the air filter, robbing the wet/dry vacuum of much of its suction power. Dustopper is designed to keep your filter clean, so you can spend less time cleaning up. Dustopper spins the incoming dirty air in a newly designed and patent-pending chamber that causes more than 99% of the dust and debris to fall into a standard 5 Gal. bucket before reaches the filter. Simply lift the Dustopper from its bucket and carry collected dirt away for easy disposal. Dustopper is design so it can easily be removed from the box and placed into service within seconds. There are no holes to drill, no screws to tighten and no sealers to apply. Simply remove Dustopper from its box, place it on a 5 Gal. standard bucket and then connect it to your shop vacuum with the hose provided.

The description says it includes a hose, all the reviews on YouTube show it also brings an elbow. Can someone confirm?

I know it doesn't come with 90 deg elbow due to the photo on HD website today 1/6/2019. My question why most people got it on last year 2018 have the elbow and it show on the box, does it come with 2 versions?
Asked by: MissElbow
I just bought one yesterday and it came with the 90 deg elbow.

Will it still work if I line the Homer Bucket with a disposable plastic trash bag?
Asked by: Liner
The bag would need to be very secure. But even then, it may affect the cyclone action of the unit...I just periodically dump out the pale to a smaller garbage bag. Really very little mess.

Which port is the inlet, which is the outlet? It doesn’t specify online or on the packaging.

Asked by: TileGiy
The ports on the unit are labeled. The top is the suction from the vac and the side is the pickup.

Fit perfect on Home Depot matching orange bucket. Quick easy set up and within minutes was capturing debris. Prolonging shop vacs main filter life will quickly justify expense of cyclone and save time cleaning vac drum. Attaching cyclone to shop vac used as central home vac has prolonged emptying vac drum and filter life greatly and kept another filter out of the trash. Because of lighter debris, mostly dust, adding second five gallon bucket below first creating a deeper space captures even more dust making the cyclone even more effective. Hose, elbow and cyclone device fit together well and was easy set up. Cyclone is more flexible than expected but is strong enough to perform well. Vac suction draws cyclone down whenever intake is restricted by normal vacuuming. After over two months use Cyclone has performed as expected. Satisfied and recommend for effective pre-filtering and prolonging filter life of often used shop vac.

For under $40, this is a great low profile option to keep your shop vac nice and clean when picking up "DRY" debris. Keeping the filter clean and free of dust, no more clogging up the motor and reducing suction and getting a face full of dust trying to shake/blow off the filter w/ your air compressor. Since you get the Dustopper AND a 3 Ft hose (and connecting elbow), it's a great bargain and much better than using a stock 7-ft hose to connect the dustopper to the shop vac. This dust separator works great for smaller "DRY" stuff. If you try using it to suck up water or wet debris, it doesn't do as well. I would said, it is 90% effective. I sucked up about 8-9 gallons of water, dirt and composition roofing grit, and there was maybe about a gallon that made it into the vac when all said and done. Still easier to dump the 5-gal bucket vs a 16-gal shop vac, and the smooth walls of the bucket make it easier for cleanup afterwards. FYI, the HD homer bucket is not strong enough to handle a 6.5HP motor from the shop vac. Once you get suction, the sides of the bucket just collapse. Its just a matter of time before the sides develop a crack and fail. Consider a stronger alternative to the homer bucket if you have a high suction or high HP unit.

In April 2019 I gave this a 3 star rating due to the Home Depot (Homer) bucket was collapsing when used with a older Festool CT22 dust collector system. I have since learned a few things and have somewhat solved this issue. After some internet research I have found two worthwhile solutions. One would be to look for a stronger bucket with a thickness of .090 inches (Homer is .070 inches thick), (as stamped on bottom of bucket) and the other option that I have chosen is to use two Homer buckets (one inside the other). This option ensures the Dustopper lid fits as designed. So far dust collection is excellent with hardly nothing entering in the vacuum and over 99.5 percent of debris entering the bucket. . The supplied 90 degree elbow fits the Festool vacuum well with no issues. And the Festool hoses also fit very snug to the Dustopper lid. I also built a little cart with wheels to support the buckets. Festool wants around 375 dollars for their version of a dust separator. So I saved quite a bit of money using this system and I'm now happy with its performance.

Without this product what happens is that the filter on the vacuum will completely clog, you will lose suction, and the vacuum container won’t be anywhere near full. This product works so well I bought a second one. If you have a home or hobby shop this should be all you need volume wise. It’s very easy to empty versus having to empty the vacuum and clean the filter. No real need to look at a system that is more expensive or requires some degree of assembly. There is nothing to dislike about it and I've had them for two months. After looking at other systems and the cost of them, I am very pleased with the purchase. I did purchase the Home Depot bucket to go with it.

Trying to keep my sawdust out of our home has always been a problem for a weekend woodworker, without a dust collection system. Saw some neat builds of other products and wanted to create my own from their basic design. I liked the example submitted to WOOD issue 259 as a starting point. Tough part was the ABS/PVC fittings to match up to the Ridgid shop vac, found the 2" rubber elbow with hose clamps (plumbing department) attached fit pretty well without the hose clamp. Great suction of the shaving from the holes cut into the plywood shelf design. Didn't know about the #dustopper pictures in Instagram, check them out before you build. Product performs as listed and much better than I expected and MADE IN THE USA. Keep up the good work Dustopper and thanks to HomeDepot for bring this product to the market and believing there are other less expensive ways to help control your shop dust.

Blue Plastic Translucent Pail" to build a mini dust-collection system for a router table. I used the 3.5-gallon buckets instead of the standard "Homer" 5-gallon buckets so that the system would be short enough to fit where I needed it to. I haven't completed the system yet but I tested the Dustopper with my regular shop vac and it works well on the smaller bucket. Bonus: since the 3.5-gallon bucket is translucent I will be able to see how full of sawdust it is without having to open it. I discovered the Dustopper by chance and I was very glad to find it because it saved me the effort of building my own dust separator. Home Depot should advertise these more.

I learned about this cyclonic dust separator from a YouTube woodworking site. I purchased my first one since the price was reasonable. I wanted to test it as a way to save money on replace expensive and messy filters on my vacuums. Now I own two of them, one on my shop-vac attached to my table saw and another attached to my garage vacuum for general floor cleaning. These separators proved themselves effective during my first use. 99% of the debris is collected before it ever gets to my filter inside the vacuum, just outstanding.

I needed some sort of dust collection system, after seeing videos and reviews I bought a dustopper, Rigid Vac, and of course a Homer bucket to complete the system. I've had it for about a month now. It really works great. Just a couple little things I experienced is, one it doesn't really snap on to tight to the bucket, I would have thought it needed to be tighter for a better seal, the second thing is the noise, it does make a whistle/whirling type noise but I always have ear protection on anyways so it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe some type of rubber o ring around the top of the bucket? I don't know maybe try a few things. It does work exactly how it says it does, maybe better! I love it!
